Vishnusahasra Nama
- R. Ashalatha
Vishnusahasra Nama is considered
as a great mantra and best scripture as
well. The significance of the scripture
lies in the fact that the script was written
by Lord Ganesh, Himself and composed
by an ardent devotee Bhishmacharya at
his death bed at the Kurukshetra, the warfield, in front of the Lord Vishnu, the
Parabhrama. To my limited knowledge,
this is the only scripture (other than
Narayaneeyam) composed and chanted
before the Lord Himself and thereby gets
divine endorsement.
As a mantra, Vishnusahasra Nama
is very powerful and a panacea for all the
worldly afflictions. Normally, mantras
may broadly be categorized as
Bheejakshara mantras and Shanti

mantras. The main difference

between these lies in as the
Bheejakshara mantras should not be
chanted without proper initiation
from competent Guru, that too at
specified / prescribed periods. Not
only that, the chanting of
Bheejakshara mantras requires
proper intonation or spells. But,
this is not the case with Shanti
mantras like Vishnusahasra Nama.
To highlight the leniency in
the chanting of Vishnusahasra
Nama, any Shanti Mantra for that
matter, let me quote the following
incident, wherein God Himself
appeared and uphold the freedom of
intonation:
Once a lay-man was asked to
chant Vishnusahasra Nama,
regularly with sincere devotion. As
he was ignorant of Sanskrit
knowledge he chanted . . . .
Padmanabho maraprabhuhu . .
Actually, this supposed to be
pronounced as . . . . Padmanabho
Amaraprabhuhu . . . This was

severely criticized by some scholars

/ pundits, as they viewed
maraprabhuhu as Lord of Trees,
whereas the original stotra
Amaraprabhuhu stands for Lord
of Devas / Immortals. But, its said
that the Lord Vishnu Himself
appeared in the dream of a scholar
and explained him that there was
nothing wrong to call Him as
Maraprabhuhu, since He was not
only Lord of Immortals, but also of
mortals, i.e. human beings. Then
only, it got striked to the scholar that
the word mara stands for both
trees as well as mortals.
Though there exists leniency
in pronunciation, the intrinsic value
of the Stotra can never be
underestimated. Because, in
Vishnusahasra Nama, as various
commentators, claimed the coinage
of words itself mystic and highly
meaningful, so as to qualify it as a
powerful mantra.
Knowing the greatness and
importance of Vishnusahasra Nama
Stotra, Pujya Shri Radhakrishna
Swamiji, (the great disciple of His
Holiness Shri Narasimha Swamiji)
the founder-President of Shri Sai

Spiritual Centre at Bangaluru has

prescribed Vishnusahasra Nama as a
panacea for everything. In fact,
Swamiji has propagated chanting of
Vishnusahasra Nama Stotra as his life
mission. Especially, Swamiji
prescribed Vanamaali Gadhi
Shanki Chakri Chanandaki
Shrimaan Narayano Vishnur
Vasudevo Abhirakshatu to all the
persons, who were in distress. Even
today, the Shri Sai Spiritual Centre is
reverberating with the vibrant chanting
of Vishnusahasra Nama.
Swamiji has made us to witness
so many miracles by the chanting of

Vishnusahasra Nama. The following is

one among such experiences:
Swamiji was narrating his
experiences of his stay in Ooty long ago
(19-4-1971). He referred to one
Shastriar who happened to be his
neighbour who had two unmarried
daughters. The Shastriar would often
complain to the Swamiji about the
difficulties he had experienced in getting
his daughters married. His daughters
were found to be wasting most of their
time in reading the daily newspapers.
After gaining sufficient familiarity with
the household, Swamiji asked the two
daughters why they remained unmarried.
In reply, they told him that it was because
the efforts of their father in this direction
had proved futile. Then Swamiji told
them. Dont say that. But first leave the
habit of going through the newspapers
and idling away your time. Reading of
the papers has nothing to do with you.
On the other hand, recite
Vishnusahasranama every day for 25 days
from to-day. In addition, do pradakshina
to Tulasi planted in front of your house.
You must do your best also in regard to
your marriage. Who will look after you
when you grow up? Both agreed to act
in accordance with the advice. Then

Swamiji asked their father to

advertise in the papers for obtaining
suitable bridegrooms for both.
Finally, some people came to their
house for negotiations regarding the
marriage. They consulted Swamiji as
a neighbour of the Shastriar about the
suitability of his daughters for
marriage with their sons. Swamiji
unhesitatingly recommended the
proposal saying that the two
daughters would make very good
housewives. In due course, the
marriages took place and the
Shastriar was very happy.
The above miracle took place
nearly 40 years ago. I would like to
narrate a similar miracle which was
experienced by our family members
in the month of March 2012. We
were searching for a suitable bride
for my brother-in-law, and started to
look into the horoscope, somehow
time passed by and it was a year and
we were not getting any satisfactory
match for him, which really created
tension to my Aunty (mother-in-law).
Then we started giving suggestions
to try to post in matrimonial column
in newspapers and websites and
started to spread the word through

the nervous system, and so many other

to mention. I wish you guys listen to it,
no harm, but abundant of gain is stored
in listening to this. There is no time
restriction, anytime in a day you can
listen and make mom also to listen to

MEANT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS.. GOT

day Aunty spoke with lot of grief, and
this affected us and my hubby was also
worried as to what next to do? Just
then I read the above miracle narrated
by Swamiji and somehow wanted to
pass on to my brother-in-law, but he
was like any other young chap who
does not really pay much interest on
spiritual matters, so need to think and
draft a email in such a way that he
will definitely follow,
I want you to do me a favour from
tomorrow when you are at home, just
play the vishnusahasranama
stotram, its good not just for the
heart and soul but also for the blood

In order to reinforce the benefits
highlighted in the phalashruti shloka of
Vishnu Sahasra Nama, I have synopsized
the significance of chanting of Vishnu
Sahasra Nama Stotra as below:
That man who with devotion and
perseverance and heart wholly turned
towards him, recites these thousand
names of Vasudeva every day, after having
purified himself, succeeds in acquiring
great fame, a position of eminence among
his kinsmen, enduring prosperity, and
lastly, that which is of the highest benefit
to him (viz., emancipation Moksha itself).

Such a man never meets with fear at any

time, and acquires great prowess and
energy. Disease never afflicts him;
splendour of complexion, strength, beauty,
and accomplishments become his. The sick
become hale, the afflicted become freed
from their afflictions; the frightened
become freed from fear, and he that is
plunged in calamity becomes freed from
calamity.
The man who hymns the praises of
that foremost of Beings by reciting His

thousand names with devotion succeeds

in quickly crossing all difficulties. That
mortal who takes refuge in Vasudeva and
who becomes devoted to Him, becomes
freed of all sins and attains to eternal
Brahman. They who are devoted to
Vasudeva have never to encounter any evil.
They become freed from the fear of birth,
death, decrepitude, and disease.

In Shri Sai Satcharitra ch.27

Baba gifted Vishnu Sahasaranmam
and forced Shyama to chant at least
one slokam each day knowing it
will bring lot of good for him and
said,
I
was
keeping
Vishnusahasranama on my chest as
I was suffering from heart
trouble. Baba Himself did not
have such trouble. It must have
been one of the devotees having it.
For his sake, Baba would have
prayed to Vishnu. Baba would also
say, Hari has entered my heart. He
is my heart. If Baba could say so
much about Vishnusahasranama,
should we not repeat it and get the
benefit from it.
No Matter wherever you are,
just chant or listen to
Vishnusahasranama stotram, its
good not just for the heart and soul
but also for the blood circulation,
blood pressure and for the nervous
system, and much more abundant of
gains is stored in listening to this.
There is no time restriction,
anytime in a day you can listen.
