Palestinian singer Yacoub Shaheen wins Arab Idol

23 year-old Palestinian singer Yacoub Shaheen on Saturday won the Arab Idol singing contest, defeating 25 contestants from across the Arab world who took part in the popular television show this season.

Hundreds of Palestinians in Shaheen’s hometown of Bethlehem, including the mayor, gathered in front of a large screen set up at the Nativity Square to watch the show’s finale, where Shaheen competed against fellow compatriot Amir Dandan and Yemeni singer Ammar Mohammad. As the winner was announced, Shaheen’s fans celebrated all night, waving Palestinian flags and distributing sweets.

Shaheen became the second Palestinian to win the competition after Mohammed Assaf, a Palestinian from Gaza who was later named Goodwill Ambassador for UNRWA, won the title in 2013.
