POETS & WRITERS MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES application information for writers conferences, literary festivals, residencies, and colonies of interest to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. Applications for the following events are due shortly. Conferences and festivals with rolling, first-come, first-served admission are listed well in advance. Some accept registration on the date of the event. Contact the sponsoring organization for an application and complete guidelines. When requesting information by mail, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE).

Bear River Writers’ Conference

The 2017 Bear River Writers’ Conference, sponsored by the University of Michigan, will be held from June 1 to June 5 at Camp Michigania on Walloon Lake, near Petoskey, Michigan. The conference features workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, discussions, nature walks, and time to write. The faculty includes poets Tarfia Faizullah, Thomas Lynch, Jamaal May, and Richard Tillinghast; poet and fiction writer Laura Kasischke; fiction writers Antonya Nelson and Claire Vaye Watkins; and creative nonfiction writers Jerry Dennis and Donovan Hohn. Tuition, including all meals, is $625. Lodging is available at the camp in shared or private cabins from $90 to $250. A $100 deposit is required to secure enrollment; the balance is due by May 5. Full and partial scholarships are available; submit a brief personal statement and up to eight pages of poetry or 10 pages of prose by March 13. Visit the website for complete guidelines.

Colgate Writers’ Conference

The Colgate Writers’ Conference will be held from June 11 to June 17 at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. The conference features workshops, readings, craft talks, and panel discussions for poets, fiction writers, and nonfiction writers. The faculty and readers include poet Peter Balakian; fiction writers Greg Ames, C. J. Hauser, and J. Robert Lennon; and creative nonfiction writers Jennifer Brice and David Ryan. The cost of the conference, which includes tuition, on-campus housing, and meals, is $1,095 for poetry and short fiction workshops and $1,595 for novel and creative nonfiction workshops. Limited financial aid is available. Submit an application and a writing sample of four to six poems or up to 25 pages of fiction or creative nonfiction by April 21. There is no application fee.
