- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I love Evanovich (have for a long time) and her writing style. Wicked Appetite had the "feel" of a Stephanie Plum series novel, but was refreshing and new. It was great to have Diesel along for the ride, but interact with a different crowd. Can't wait to see what else is in store for Lizzy and Glo!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Stephanie Plum, only sillier, would be my summation of this book. Actually, the monkey, Carl, is the best thing about the book. He's cute, lovable and gross all at the same time. The book takes place in Boston and has a bit of historical detail to make it more authentic. The plot revolves around seven stones that represent and maybe are the famous Seven Deadly Sins. Diesel, who we have met in at least one previous Evanovich book, is one of the main characters in this book. He competes against his cousin Wulf to find the stones with the help of Lizzy Tucker, a baker equipped with previously unrealized special powers. Presumably this will be a series of seven books. I have to wonder how much larger the publisher will make the print so that the books continue to appear the size of a regular hard-back. They look like material for upper-elementary school readers given the size of the print. It's time to shrink the books down to their appropriate print-size and length and stop this charade.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5a mix between sookie stackhouse and sabrina the teenage witch. didn't love it, didnt' hate it. simply gave me something light and fluffy to read for a few hours while i was sick.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I am a big fan of Janet Evanovich but I am not a fan of this book. I liked the main female character but she is quite the scardy cat and quite guliable which is a turn off for me if they don't improve over the length of the book. The side story with Glo and her desire to perform spells is also a turn-off but occasionally comical. The book lacked the typical Evanovich humor that I have grown to love. I hope the next book is better. The book had a decent storyline and plot.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5but it was not great and was rather a let down. it wasn't a full fledged mystery or romance or anything. just a cute funny story not much of a novel. she can do better.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is such a cute book, with funny characters and an outrageous plotline. It's adorable and kid friendly (>12 years old).
I had a lovely time listening to it, actually I found myself laughing while people were staring at me laughing by myself in the car. I bet they thought I was crazy ? - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What a hoot! I loved all the quirky characters in this book. Onto another Evanovich book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Silly, yet amusing. Evanovich continues to follow the same formula that has made the Stephanie Plum series so successful, but this one is just...sillier. Can't think of another word for it. It won't be mistaken for literature, but there will be many who will be vastly entertained. I listened to it in the car - I might not be so generous if I was taking time away from some other activity to sit down and read it.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Change the names, change the locale, same characters in a different place.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Lizzy Tucker is incredibly talented when it comes to making cupcakes. She inherited her great-aunt’s house, built in 1740, that requires more money than she has to fix. Working at Dazzle’s Bakery in Salem, Massachusetts, she is confronted by scary man Wulf who manages to disappear in clouds of smoke. He is after one of the Seven Stones of Power that each represent the Seven Deadly Sins. His cousin Diesel is engaged in a battle with Wulf for the stones. Besides being gorgeous and other worldly, Diesel has turned up to protect her as well as use her previously unknown ability to find objects of magical power that will lead him to the gluttony stone. A ninja cat and badly behaved monkey complete the cast in events that are overwhelmingly silly at times, sometimes to the point of annoyance. This is same sort of writing as can be found in Evanovich’s many other similar books, but at least you know what you are going to get. A good rainy afternoon read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved this book. If you've read any of the between the numbers books in the Stephanie Plum series, you will already know and love Diesel. Janet Evanovich has a way of making you fall in love with her characters from the very beginning of the book. Written in the same sense of humor as the Plum series, this book will keep you intrigued the entire way through. I feel like I need a little Diesel in my life.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5cliched romance - I feel so few authors of this form of writing can pull off the "romance" angle without it being contrived. I didn't like this book enough to read more in the series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ahh Diesel... I keep picturing Donohue as a biker.. Seeet (sigh) yeah :-)
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Diesel has been a side character in the Stephanie Plum series, dropping in and causing extra chaos to her life. He pops into Lizzy’s life and lets her know that she is a magical finder of what he needs to find. He is on a mission to find magical stones that personify the Seven Deadly Sins. Madcap things happen and it is a fun light read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5My recommendation is not to read this series unless you've read Between the Plums. Makes much more sense that way.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Evanovich brings her trademark quirky characters and tongue-in-cheek humour to the realm of urban fantasy in this first book in a new series. A fun and light summer read; if you like her mysteries (esp. Stephanie Plum) you'll probably like this one!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A very light weight read that doesn't lend itself to much examination. That being said there are some pretty funny moments and it is not a bad way to pass the time. Probably won't bother with the rest of series though.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Trying too hard to be funny
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's exactly what I expected from a Janet Evanovich novel. Yes, it's a little formulaic, but it's still fun. The quirky characters and humor kept me laughing from beginning to end. The highlight of the book was Lorelei King's narration of the audiobook. She captured each character's personality perfectly and added even more whimsy to the story. It is very similar to the Stephanie Plum series, even including some characters from the between the numbers stories, but if you enjoy Stephanie Plum, you'll enjoy Lizzy as well.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Reading this book, I can't help but feel that Janet Evanovich is a one trick pony. I constantly found myself comparing Lizzie to Stephanie Plum and finding the formula for this novel too similar to the Stephanie Plum books but not as good.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. I have not read Evanovich in a while so imagine my surprise when i found myself laughing out loud at the silliness of what occurred in the book. Everything was plausible but not simultaneously and that was very amusing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Pretty good beginning involving my favorite character Glo and her quirkiness, Carl-the monkey that flips everyone off- and Cat 7143, who may or may not be a ninja. Hope the rest of the series keeps up with this good start. I have always been interested in Dante's inferno and the 7 Deadly Sins and so far this is right up my alley.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I truly am a fan of this writer. I must first begin the codicil that I was getting rather bored with Stephanie Plum and the works were becoming predictable. In this new series, featuring Lizzie and Diesel, there is nothing predictable about this story. I was so pleasantly surprised I found myself laughing out loud, unwillingly on a crowded plane.
I laughed so hard that several people wanted to know what I was reading.
That is the start of a good read.
I strongly reccommend this book for an escape from the everyday.
I am headed to the books tore to pick up the next one in the series, Wicked Business. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I'm always amused by some of the fans of Janet Evanovich -- on one hand they complain that her Stephanie Plum series is getting stale. On the other, if she tries something different they complain because "it's just not the same". As much as I love her Plum series, I've also enjoyed her "between the numbers" books featuring Diesel, a semi-supernatural figure who has strange powers. So Evanovich has spun Diesel into his own series, and happily it works very well (at least it did for me). Let's admit it though, Evanovich writes a certain style of book -- light, funny, pure fluff. If you like it, fine. If not, or you get tired of it after a while, STOP READING HER BOOKS. Don't keep reading and post bad reviews over and over because she's not changing to suit you. Oddly enough, these same people seem to be the first to post terrible reviews of the NEXT in the series.(There, I feel better I got that off my chest!)
The female lead in this new series is Lizzie Tucker, who left New York when she inherited a house in Marblehead from her Great Aunt Ophelia. Lizzie is a pastry chef for Dazzles bakery in Salem. Diesel arrives in town and informs Lizzie that she is an 'Unmentionable' who can sense the presence of objects with magical power. Diesel needs Lizzie's help to locate Stones that represent the Seven Deadly Sins. In 'Wicked Appetite' they are trying to locate the Stone representing Gluttony, which makes for some amusing moments in itself. Diesel has an evil cousin named Wulf who is also after the Stones, and he doesn't seem to mind hurting people who are in his way.
I have to say that Lizzie read an awful lot like Stephanie Plum, which is a little disappointing and shows a lack of creativity on Evanovich's part. But she makes up for it to an extent with some amusing secondary characters, including Glo the aspiring witch, the pure evil but sexy Wulf, his minion Hatchet (a medieval enthusiast), and my favorite, Carl the flinger-flipping monkey.
To sum up, if you've enjoyed Evanovich's style of writing and brand of humor and you're ready for something a little different, you will probably enjoy this book as much as I did. It has all the things you like about the Plum books, with new characters and a supernatural twist. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I’ve put off reading this series despite my love for Janet Evanovich mostly because of the supernatural twist. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood for a combo of supernatural and absurd. I already knew it was a spinoff of the Stephanie Plum series, so the writing style and tone were not a surprise. Plus, Janet Evanovich’s books all kinda read the same.To my surprise, I enjoyed this! Basically, there are 3 types of people — Normal, Unmentionable, and Questionable. Normal people are, well, normal. Unmentionable people have some sort of magical power, though they may not realize it themselves. And Questionable people seem to have some sort of power, but it’s not defined. And what are these powers used for? To find and control/take care of some magic stones. Each of the 7 stones induces the characteristics of one of the deadly sins in whomever has it. The more stones a person has, the more powerful they are.Diesel, who is introduced in the Stephanie Plum books, is an Unmentionable. Turns out, cupcake baker Lizzy is too, and he enlists her help in tracking down the stones, in particular the stone representing gluttony. True to Evanovich/Plum form, there are a host of zany characters they encounter along the way. And a monkey. As I said, I enjoyed it, but it’s not her strongest work. On the good side you find the slow-burning relationship between Lizzy and Diesel, Lizzy’s supporting cast, and Lizzy’s cat. On the bad side, you find the monkey. I really, really, really, could do without the monkey. He’s just straight-up absurdity. He serves no purpose. There’s plenty of funny in this book without the damned monkey.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I am a big fan of Janet Evanovich but I am not a fan of this book. I liked the main female character but she is quite the scardy cat and quite guliable which is a turn off for me if they don't improve over the length of the book. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Janet Evanovich has a way with words- she evokes images that make me laugh out loud. This is a new series for me and I put off reading it because it looked too 'romance-y.' Ok, so I was wrong. Sort of. The big romance is the last sentence of the last chapter and it was not too 'romance-y.' I actually kind of expected it. I also rooted for it. But I digress. The story is a lot of fun. Like the Stephanie Plum series, this book is hilarious. There is not so much mystery as laugh out loud moments. I definitely want to read the next one.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this book. I will need to purchase more of Janet's books definitly the sequel to Lizzy and Diesel.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5YES!!!
Diesel needed to leave Stephanie alone anyway, she's already got two men on her hands. Now he's got Lizzy, who is "special" as well, and while the sparks fly between the two, they are off limits to each other (of course!).
So, they have to find the stones relating to the seven deadly sins and get them back before Wulf (yum) finds them.
New cast of characters... love Glo and Carl the monkey is on board as well (not sure how I feel about that).
