Author

Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850, changing his second name to ‘Louis’ at the age of eighteen. He has always been loved and admired by countless readers and critics for ‘the excitement, the fierce joy, the delight in strangeness, the pleasure in deep and dark adventures’ found in his classic stories and, without doubt, he created some of the most horribly unforgettable characters in literature and, above all, Mr. Edward Hyde.

Another novel whose ideas have become so prevalent in the genre that it is hard to appraise as what seems trite now was seminal when the novel was written. An enjoyable adventure story and Long John Silver is a surprisingly nuanced character for this type of story.

Good adventure story at any age. I never read it as a child as it was considered a boy's book. It's a great tale, very fast paced with interesting characters.

So there I was, drifting in Pandemic Land, wondering what to read next, when the soft dulcet voice of Lou Reed drifted into my sullen consciousness: "I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seasOn a great big clipper shipGoing from this land here to thatOn a sailor's suit and cap..." And, then, right after that, this early Dylan lyric came crashing through the Pandemic Mayhem: "Haul on the bowline, we sang that melody...like all tough sailors do, when they're far away at sea!" In a moment, the die was cast. I knew that the next book I would read, or reread rather, would be Treasure Island, one that I read some, what, forty years ago, as a mere child? It was a great idea! What a treat! What pleasure! And the fact that the back cover said, "For children, aged 10-14," discouraged me not a whit! To make matters even better, it so happened that my edition was a facsimile of a 1911 one, illustrated by one NC Wyeth, the father of the very Andrew (Mansplain Alert!), who painted Christina's World (and not to forget the voluptuous Helga). But I digress. This adventure story was an unalloyed delight, a story of intrigue, treachery, courage, and a cast of characters right out of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland! I can say no more save this: English literature is awash (as we pirates say) with secondary characters of the highest order: Holmes' Dr Watson, Dickens Madame Defarge, King Arthur's Merlin, Alice's Cheshire Cat, and so on...so allow me to introduce another one, the charismatic Long John Silver, the humble, affable ship's cook in this gripping yarn...or was he only a cook? Read it to find out!

This book would make a great read aloud for my students! The adventure on the high-seas, the mystery, the betrayal, all very exciting and thrilling! I couldn't put it down!

I listened to the audio and read the book. It never got any better. My eyes went over the words but I do not know what really happens in the book. I used wikipedia to try and separate the characters but there were just too many. The only thing I really remember is about the apple barrell.
But I gave it all I had.

I reread this today and, considering when it was written, it remains a serviceable story. I can't help thinking the characters are unbelievably naive, but whether this is because I know the story or because of it's original intended audience, I don't know. Oddly, I couldn't get the image of Kermit the Frog out of my mind whenever Captain Smollett was mentioned.

Young Jim Hawkins finds adventure when a "gentleman of fortune" stays at his father's inn, and the old pirate's compatriots come looking for him -- and a treasure map!Treasure Island is the quintessential adventure tale: a daring hero, a treasure, and dastardly pirates. I had a few false starts trying to read it as a kid, but I drowned in the antiquated language due to a book that's a hundred years old set in the 1700s. But when I was without power for several days, it was the perfect book to take me far and away from my circumstances. Partly because I knew much of the storyline (mostly, I am embarrassed to admit, through watching Muppet Treasure Island as a kid), partly because Jim is clearly narrating events that happened before, there was never any doubt that our English heroes would make it through unscathed, but this true blue adventure tale is certainly entertaining.

I found this to be a more complex book then I thought it would be. while it is on its surface a coming of age and adventure story there is much more then that. the character long john silver is very complex. I am glad I read it

I really enjoyed this book. If I remember correctly this story is where a lot of the pirate lore we know comes from, like the parrot on the pirates shoulder and the one legged pirate. Very fun read.

When people are amazed that the Harry Potter books are for kids but they are fun for any age, I giggle and think about this book; Ms. Rowling was not the first.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson was an excellent book that I enjoyed reading. I like adventures and have not read a lot of pirate stories but this was one that I liked. I could see this story being well perceived by young and old as well. I would recommend this to be read by others.

I just really had trouble getting into this. The characters were so two-dimensional and the "action" went from a lot of talking to a lot of killing and back to a lot of talking. Not my cuppa Joe.

Wow! This is the first time I experience a novel on audio. My reading experience was magnified, the story seemed more alive and personal. I don't know why I waited so long to hear a novel on audio. I will definitely give my future students the choice of enjoying stories this way too. I didn't care too much about the plot of the story and the words were a bit complicated for me, but I really enjoyed many of the character traits. I gets pirate stories have never appealed to me.

As noted by a prior reviewer, Stevenson's classic adventure tale was clearly written for young people. However, the book goes no further. Its simplistic characters and lack of depth or story line will leave the adult reader wanting more. Personally, I thought the book was unimpressive. Read Stevenson's Doctor Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde instead.

I read the "Jr." version of this as a kid and enjoyed it again as a 40 year old... I'm looking forward to reading this, a chapter a night, to my son & daughter when they're a little older.

Possibly a bit dated and prachy when it comes to duty, patriotism, obedience and all that muck. Still, it's a wonderful and beautifully written adventure, and Long John Silver remains one on the most intriguing characters in modern literature.Comtemporary writers should take heed: you don't need 600+ pages to create an engrossing and huge adventure. Stevenson does with 200 pages what most genre writers today fails to do with endless multi-volume series.

This is an adult novel, but due to having a child as a POV character, it has become a children's book. But it does remain a great adventure story with wonderful characters and a well crafted plot. Oh, a group of ill-assorted people struggle over the disposition of a hoard of pirate treasure.

Just about the perfect adventure story. Pirates, buried treasure, loyalty, double-crossing, murder, mayhem, mystery - it's got it all, and a terrific coming of age story as well. Literally, the book that launched a thousand ships in the form of other pirate adventures all the way up to the present day. And I have to admit that with twenty pages to go I still had very little idea how it was going to end.

I was required to read this for my children's lit class this term. I figured it would be fun since it's a classic I had not yet gotten to and it's pirates, adventure, a daring young boy... How wrong I was. I found it boring, often confusing, and slow. If I was a young preteen or teen reading this, I would be totally exasperated. I have to say I liked Muppet Treasure Island better - and that was not good either.

Think I read this at primary school, though it may have been early days at secondary school, so will say circa 1986 as a guess. Certainly enjoyed it at the time, as I was always into this type of tale, along with watching several adaptations of this book. Unsure whether I'd appreciate it as much if I read this as an adult, but either way it deserves at least four stars.

A rollicking adventure story, a coming of age, a swashbuckling sea-tale, a boy's book. I read this to my son over many nights before bed, and while I feared the violence would frighten him and cause nightmares, it did not; but it did hold his attention and get him talking and thinking (and drawing treasure maps). What fun!

This is a book that I read for school. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, it was easier to understand what was going on. I would recomend it to anyone who is looking for a challenging book to read.
