- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amelia Bedelia is spending the day with her grandparents and they plan to make an apple pie from scratch, including a trip to the farmers' market to purchase ingredients.Throughout the course of the book, Amelia is up to her usual literal-mindedness when it comes to idioms and other phrases. For instance, she thinks the farmers' market is a place to buy farmers. The plus side with this picture book version of the character is that her mistakes are helpfully explained by her grandparents, which benefits young readers as well. The story here is more or less commonplace, but it is nice in that relatable aspect, especially seeing a family enjoying their time together. And of course, the young Amelia shows off her baking skills, foreshadowing how this character will come to fix all her mishaps in the future!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In my opinion, this is a great book to read to students in the fall. The language is descriptive and also informative because throughout the story you are learning about different kinds of apples and the process you go through to make an apple pie. The writing is engaging and flows all over the page in squiggle lines or in normal paragraph format. The characters are well developed and you can tell that Amelia is a fun-loving girl who enjoys spending time with her family. The plot is well organized and has the reader in suspense of what is going to happen next. The illustrations were colorful and engaging with words jumping all over the page to enhance the text. The book pushes readers to spend more time with family and appreciate small things. When Amelia and her Grandmother spent all day baking the pie and then the birds ended up eating it. The family still had the small pie that Amelia secretly cooked on her own. Although it was only enough for each of the family members to have a small bite they still appreciated the effort and hard work that it took, and the time they were able to spend with one another.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's Autumn and the leaves are falling. Amelia Bedelia's grandparents want to make an apple pie so she helps. However, when Grandma puts the pie outside to cool the swallows swoop down and eat it all. Luckily, Amelia Bedelia was cooking her own tiny pie and was able to share it with her family. This is a charming book with one of my favorite characters. However, the puns are not near as obvious or cute as Peggy Parish once did. This would be the PERFECT book to read in a classroom and bake or eat an apple pie afterwards. Would also be a great addition to my apple book basket!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I gave this book five stars because the illustrations are wonderful and children can relate to the importance of family from this book. You could discuss safety in the kitchen, manners, obedience, measuring in order to bake acurately, and telling time. Almost everyone can relate to going to a relatives house at some point or another. I can remember baking cookies with my grandmother and making many mistakes. I know that my cookies may not have tasted all that great, but I would not have taken anything for the quality time spend with her. Family time is very important in a child's life, and we can instill that by letting them read this book.
