A Dog's Journey: Another Novel for Humans by W. Bruce Cameron

    ★ ★ ★ ★ ½ ♥

I read A Dog's Purpose (a story shown through a dogs point of view on his many reincarnations, trying to find his purpose) last year and it became a favorite. So when I found out that there was a sequel coming out this year, I could barely hide my excitement. This is also the author who wrote Eight Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter.

This second installment begins a few years after the end of the first book. Buddy, the dog, is sure his purpose is fulfilled but when he is once again reincarnated he begins to wonder. This book questions are humans there to take care of dogs or our dogs there to care for us?

I absolutely adored the first book and am happy to report I adored the second book just as much. I devoured this 330 page book within a day – a record for me. I was just unable to put it down. The writing is so well done and I loved the way it was written from a dog's point of view. Just like with the first book, I found myself welling up with tears in some parts and laughing in others. My emotional connection to the character is one I rarely encounter. And I am not afraid to admit that I bawled my eyes out at the end and then bawled my eyes out again when recounting it to my husband.

Some of it felt like a rehash from the list book and some of it seemed pretty predictable but this didn't make my love for the book wane. This, and the first book, deal with love, compassion, death, and life. If you love dogs, this is definitely a great book. Read the first one, then read this one. And bring the Kleenex.

Wow! Such a great book and nice ending to the series. I think this series should be required reading for all dog owners!

My daughter and I listened to both books and just loved them. The narrator has the perfect voice for the dogs also. I only wish there were more of this series. ~JTC~

I was worried that this would ruin how great the last book was but it made it 100x better.

This bittersweet tale will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, but it definitely a ride you don’t want to miss. Buddy, an extraordinary dog, is at the end of his long life. His owner, Ethan, has passed away, and Buddy lives with his widow, Hannah. Their daughter-in-law, Gloria, and baby granddaughter, Clarity, come for a visit, but there is tension between the adults. Gloria is a neglectful mother, and twice, Buddy saves Clarity from serious injury, or worse. Gloria and Clarity leave, and somewhat later, Buddy passes on. But while this might seem like the end of the story, it is just the beginning. Buddy’s purpose to watch over Clarity, and this is the story of that journey. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, but always tender and touching, if you don’t own a dog already, this book will make you want to get one.

This story continues from A Dog's Purpose. Once again the dog has been reincarnated and in this book has three bodies. He/she is Molly, Max and Buddy. He meets CJ or Clarity, the granddaughter of his previous owner Ethan. Throughout all 3 lives, he ends up with some sort of relationship with CJ. I loved this book as much as the first one. The purpose the dog is trying to discern is different in each life, but still seems to have some relationship to Ethan, his first owner. As he realizes what his purpose really is, he finally gets to meet up with all his owners and loved ones in heaven. A nice, comforting story. I enjoyed the narration of the audio book. It was very calming and the only voice done was that of Gloria, and it was exactly as I would have pictured her. If you like audio books, give this one a listen, if not, then pick the book up and give it a read.

bookbox; the dog's reincarnations continue with him/her believing that his purpose is now to care for CJ, Ethan's granddaughter throughout her life…or is it?

I loved this book! I haven't read the first one yet but will look for it.
If you've ever been loved and watched over by a dog, you'll love this story told from a dog's point of view.

I cried and laughed as I followed the character's lives as he reconnected with all the people in his previous lives. I didn't want this book to end. Again, keep the tissues handy.

Plot is fine but mostly packed with sadness and stress. Ends fine, but after all that stress and all the sad moments, I'm not sure it was worth the time. I did enjoy the earlier dog book by the author, "A Dog's Purpose" and rated it higher as there were more happy moments and less stress in the plot.

As soon as I finished A Dog's Purpose, I immediately had to read A Dog's Journey and I am glad I did because I just couldn't put this down!

Buddy's journey doesn't end with Ethan and Hannah, it continues throughout the rest of Clarity's (Hannah's granddaughter) life. We go through the regular routine of seeing Buddy get reborn over and over again and eventually finding his way back to Clarity. It's amusing to read what Buddy thinks everytime he gets reborn and becomes a different dog and how fiercely loyal he is to Clarity. Buddy's personality really shines through and regardless of the obstacles, he always finds his way to help and save Clarity however he can.

Clarity and Gloria are certainly the mother and daughter duo. Gloria was a miserable excuse for a mother. Thank goodness for Trent and Buddy to be there as the silent protector of Clarity, always remaining in the background, but ever alert.

One thing though. I would have loved to have read exactly what happened after Clarity got into that car crash and Buddy was forced to leave Clarity (like was the crazy ex-boyfriend charged, Gloria's reaction, etc.).

Overall, a good sequel to A Dog's Purpose.

In this sequel to A Dog’s Purpose we rejoin Buddy in his quest to find his purpose for being a “good dog”. He thinks he has fulfilled it after finding “his boy” Ethan again and is waiting patiently for his sleep to come, sure that he will not be reborn as a puppy again. Then Charity comes into his life and he realizes that she definitely needs a dog to look out for her. Coming back as Molly the two are miraculously reunited and the reader follows along on their journey together.

For anyone who has not read A Dog’s Purpose you should know that the dog narrates these stories. Between snickers of amusements and bouts of tears I managed to get to the end of this book. Often sequels fall short of the first book, but I found this one equal to (dare I even say it … if not better than) the first. I enjoy characters that “I love to hate” and this book had that too. For anyone who loves dogs this is a must read, so grab the box of tissue, a cup of coffee and lose yourself in this book for a little while.

Wicked fast read - so good. Must be read with a dog by your side and some tissues. It really shows the value of dogs & how much they are needed in our lives. Yeah, it's a simple read but that's why I love it.

    5* favorite

I'm nostalgic about dog stories and the cover drew me in.
The journey is a fulfillment of Buddy's purpose...because "all dogs have a purpose"
and "everyone needs a dog of his own"

As the story begins, his master Ethan has died and his purpose of guarding "his boy" is fulfilled.
Enter his grand daughter, Clarity June.
He knows instinctively that the toddler is "his girl" and her protection is his purpose.
But Clarity (later called CJ) is taken away by a negligent mother and Buddy dies.

Buddy is reborn and senses a troubled teen he find, is "his girl" CJ.
"I loved CJ as much and in the same way as I had loved Ethan," the dog, now reborn as "Molly," says.

The dog narrates and takes us on the journey through his rebirths and how he, each time (as an entirely different dog) reunites with "his girl".

I laughed, I cried as I traveled with them through Buddy's rebirths and CJ's life.

    What a heartwarming, tender story.”

Written from a dog's point of view, this is the sequel to 'A Dog's Purpose', which I recommend you read first. It's a sentimental and emotional read in some places, not unlike owning a canine pet. These two books would make a great gift for any dog lover.

Loved this one too (the first book was "a Dogs purpose"). This one had me tearing up at chapter 2. I love the writing style used to convey the dogs thoughts and feelings. "I'm a front seat dog" is my favorite quote and it's used many times in the two books. I have already recommended the 1st book to friends and will do the same with this one.

What I love about this book is that it's not just a story about a dog, but it's also a coming-of-age story about a girl coping with a troubled life.A Dog's Journey is a direct sequel to the book A Dog's Purpose, in which we follow the different incarnations of a dog as he is reborn each time. Living his lives as Tobey, Bailey, Ellie and Buddy, he discovers his main mission: to love and look after his boy Ethan as he grows up.At the end of a Dog's Purpose, Ethan passes away as an old man after living a long and happy life, with Buddy by his side. Thus A Dog's Journey begins with Buddy believing that he has finally fulfilled his purpose...that is, until he meets Clarity, Ethan's rambunctious granddaughter who is always getting into dangerous trouble in part because of her irresponsible and negligent mother. When Buddy dies, he is reborn as Molly, a poodle-mix who decides that her new purpose must be to look after Clarity, now a teenager who goes by CJ. Thus begins a tale of a love between a girl and her dog.The first book was a total impulse buy when I picked it up, but I'm so glad I did. It's a heartwarming story, at times funny, at times sad, and you don't have to be a dog owner to enjoy it. As someone who owns and loves dogs, though, the book really touched me, and I admit I cried several times while reading it. I didn't cry with A Dog's Journey, however, but it's no less poignant and impressive.I've mentioned before that I'm usually not too keen on the anthropomorphizing of animals, but W. Bruce Cameron writes so well in the dog's point of view that you can't help but be drawn in by the narrative. It takes you so deeply into a dog's mindset that you start to wonder that, hey, maybe that's really how dogs do think. And that's also the way the greater story of CJ's life unfolds in this book -- through the eyes of our canine protagonist. It's a method and style of storytelling that is surprisingly effective...and addictive. I had the audiobook version of A Dog's Journey, and what I usually do is listen right before I go to bed, so it's like I can get sleepy and drift off to someone reading to me. The thing is, it backfired with this book because I always wanted to keep listening to get further into the story, and as a result it actually kept me awake. This book isn't intense or action-filled or anything like that, but it still got me very anxious to know what would happen next. It also didn't help that the narrator is really, really good.I recommend this book if you're a dog lover, but also even if you're not. If you are a dog owner as well, I guarantee you will want to hug your dog afterward. If you haven't read the first book A Dog's Purpose though, I would advise reading it first before tackling this one.

A continuation of "A Dog's Purpose", Journey picks up and continues following the life of Buddy, who is a Good Dog. Buddy watches over his people, and has the same observations of life such as:

"People like dogs so much, sometimes they give people dog names."

A very bittersweet book as Buddy learns all about what a dog's journey actually is.

This is a follow-up to A Dog’s Purpose which I read last year and loved so much. I highly anticipated the sequel but found it a little flat – I just couldn’t invest in C.J., or in the dog being a Chihuahua for a great deal of the book. I’m still glad I read it, though, and if you’re a dog lover, you’ll be glad you read it too

I read both A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey back to back. I would recommend that for everyone that hasn't read either of them yet. I loved the story so much. I don't re-read many books, but I can see that this is a story that I will enjoy over and over again. If you love dogs, you will love these 2 books! I can't rave about them enough, but I don't want to spoil the story for anyone by telling too much.

I am a huge dog lover. Always have been, always will be. After growing up with dogs, and living with roomies who had dogs of their own, I finally got my own when I bought my house. She is a husky-mix (rescue dog) and her name is Gia (because she could totally be a super-model). I absolutely love her and I hope she can stay with me forever. When I read Mr. Cameron’s A Dog’s Purpose I immediately fell in love with the voice, the writing style and the story. Not everyone can pull off writing from a dog’s point-of-view and make it both genuine and believable. As soon as I finished, I forced all of my fellow dog-loving friends to read it. When I found out that he was writing a follow-up, I didn’t think twice before requesting an ARC. I was curious to see how he would continue Buddy’s story. I was not disappointed. In this installment, the story picks up right after A Dog’s Purpose. After going through several “lives” (as a mutt, a Golden Retriever, a German Shepherd and finally a Black Lab), Buddy finally feels he has served his purpose. He found his “boy” and stayed with him until he passed away an old man. In this installment, Buddy is certain he has fulfilled his duties and is ready to “pass on”, but before he does so, he bonds with his “boy’s” granddaughter, Clarity. Much to Buddy’s surprise, he is reborn yet again in the form of a poodle mix and is adopted by a troubled, teenage Clarity. As in the first book, I once again found myself laughing out loud, and getting misty-eyed as I tore through the pages of A Dog’s Journey. It made me wonder as I was reading if maybe Gia is a reincarnated version of one of my dog’s I’d loved in the past, and I found myself giving her frequent hugs and pats on the head as I read the book. If you want a fun, light and heartwarming story, I would definitely check this series out. Even if you’re not much of a dog lover, or never owned a dog, I think you’ll enjoy seeing life through a dog’s eyes.

A Dog's Journey was written by the same author of A Dog's Purpose and is a continuation of the story. It was beautiful, funny, and moved me to tears. The premise that our dogs watch over us through out our lives in a series of different lives is unique and quite believable. I received this book as an ARC and I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend A Dog's Journey for all dog lovers as well as any libraries.
