This series never disappoints. Harry is a wonderful character, always pitting himself against heavy hitters- criminal, magical or demonic - determinedly standing up for those who need his help, regardless of the pain and injuries he suffers in the process. It’s not grim, though, I often find my self chuckling as I am walking along, listening. In this story Harry is forced to rescue someone he despises, has to battle the fiercely powerful Denarians alongside the Knights of the Cross, and pursues the abductors and abusers of a little girl. No-one gets out unscathed ...James Masters performance is outstanding. If you enjoy his voice try some of the plays available on Audible, such as Macbeth or The Importance of Being Earnest - to go from one end of the dramatic spectrum to the other. If you have not listened to any of the Dresden Files before, I do recommend listening to the series in order, otherwise you will miss some of the nuances of relationships which have built up over time, and the maturing of Harry’s character as he learns and grows through tough experiences.

One of the things that made me laugh were the Gruffs - as in Billy Goat Gruffs. Sure they were dangerous and deadly, but still it tickled me that Mr. Butcher gave them life in his novel. Dresden is conducting his tightrope walk act again as he tries to out maneuver the bad guys and save the good ones. Somehow Dresden ends up with yet another sword.

Increasingly feeling like episodes of a TV season where they individually are fairly decent but it is the narrative arc of the season that is more interesting.

Man this series doesn't stop getting good!Jim Butcher knows how to keep it engaging by mixing in new and old characters to keep readers on their toes. There is so much character development, plot, imagery, and all around badassery. I have nothing but positive things to say about the tenth installment in the Dresden Files. Mab calls in a favor that Dresden is bound to assist with and he's none to happy about it. He has to find and bail out his nemesis, the crime lord Marcone. If that weren't bad enough there are some majorly bad demons in town. Last time he barely managed against a handful, now there are more than a dozen in town. Good thing Harry Dresden is used to going up against horrible odds. I can't wait for the next one!

Although Harry Dresden and his associates continue to blink, arch eyebrows, quirk various facial features, snarl, growl, pad, and stalk at a rate unequaled in any other reading matter in my experience, not to mention a lot of lip chewing, biting, and pursing, and moreover to do an uncanny amount of speaking quietly, and I think I'm really going to come to loathe Molly Carpenter, I am still getting a kick out of the series. This was book ten, and I have just ordered in numbers eleven and twelve in order to make sure I have a couple of fun, fast, absorbing reads on hand for those late-night emergencies.Just don't ask me what it was about. I'm afraid I've forgotten already.

Queen Mab wants Harry to find Marcone who was kidnapped by the Denarians. Denarians also get Ivy. Luccio and Harry sleep together, Murphy thinks it is a bad idea. We learn about New Mexico. Molly isn't an incompetent twit. Michael is hurt badly. Mouse doesn't like the Denarians. Uncharted creepy islands out in middle of Lake Michigan. Traitors in Denarian ranks as well as in Marcone's organization, probably Demeter. Billy Goats Gruff from Summer Court are after Harry too, Mab took away Harry's memories of fire to prevent them from using it to track him.

Wonderful continuation of the Dresden saga....Butcher very cleverly includes most of the major players in a thrilling plot of good (Dresden & Michael) versus evil (Nicodemus & The Summer Court). This one continues the suspense building in the past several novels of the overall saga.

As usual, this entry in the Harry Dresden series was full of non-stop action, witty come-backs and lots of scary monsters. Reading this series is like eating a really, really good chocolate chip cookie -- as soon as you finish, you want another one!

Harry Dresden owes Queen Mab a couple of favors, and she surprises him when she wants to cash one in by having him rescue from his mysterious, and, as it turns out, extremely dangerous kidnappers. This installment is full-on action, which makes for a fun read, and it's so full of baddies your head will be spinning. The downside of it is that there isn't as much room for character development or the funny commentary that usually fills the Dresdens. It's still a great installment in the series and it'll be very interesting to see what happens with all the characters in the future.

One thing I like about Jim Butcher's stories is, despite the unrealism of magic and wizards, they're realistic. Things don't always go right for Harry -- okay, they don't usually go right for Harry. If he's taking a shot at a demon, he's more likely to miss. If he needs to get into somewhere, it's likely to be locked. Nothing's easy, obstacles are everywhere. And as the reader, you never get off the edge of your seat. One thing you must love, to love Harry Dresden, is his wiseass, wise-cracking attitude. When he came face to face with Mab, Queen of the winter half of Faerie, he was so scared, "I couldn't summon up a single wiseass comment, and that just doesn't happen to me." He's reassured that if he can still crack some snark, he's doing okay. It's part of him. While in some other character it would feel forced and out of sync, it's what you expect from Harry Dresden. He proved it in the short story "Heorot," when, after not making any snarky comments to that Black Court vampire, he spit a mouthful of garlic powder onto her with the warning that if he's not mouthing off, something's wrong. The plot in Small Favor is a bit more complicated, a bit harder to keep track of. I wasn't always quite sure of the relationship among all the players, but once I thought it through I was a bit clearer. On my second reading, I didn't have that problem, but knowing the general story probably helps that. [SPOILERS AHEAD!] I did notice a bit of foreshadowing this time: when Harry said if Titania wanted to stop him, all she'd have to do is break his back and land him in the hospital. Poor choice of words, Harry... I was hoping to see more of Bob in this one, after he made such an early appearance, but that turned out to be not so much. In fact, we saw less of a few of the usual characters, including Murphy and Thomas, though they made their usual spectacular entrances at the end. Michael was the prominent secondary character, and he came through for Harry in ways Harry wouldn't have expected.Ok, I knew Murphy had cajones, but standing up to that gruff who wouldn't notice if he sat on her, she proved they're big brass cajones. But one thing I saw coming -- I always knew that sword was meant for her! Go Murphy! She'll take it up sometime. She has to. And on my second reading, I noticed that Mab refers to Murphy as the "Lady Knight." If Mab thinks of her that way, come on...And Michael - ack! I hope the price he's paid turns out to be worth it. I also noticed something on my rereading. Everyone referred to Harry as "bound to Winter" or otherwise beholden or owned by Winter. As if it was a done deal. Perhaps it was... While Harry deserved the ending, it did NOT make me happy. Still waiting for the ending I'm hoping for!

Plenty of action, amusing and downright snarky first-person narrative, wizards in Chicago on the rampage. Explanations were okay as reminders to series followers, but incomplete and somewhat muddled for new readers. R for language and suggestive sexuality, but not hard-core.

Loved the character of Harry Dresden - witty, sarcastic, tough guy with a soft heart. But, I found it difficult to follow the plot. I realized that it is book 6 in a series. Hmm.... I think I need to go back and read the first couple.

In which our intrepid hero Harry meets the billy goats gruff, plays with Mab, the fallen angels, and involves everyone he knows in a massive intrigue yet again.

More of the same old, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. And Harry finally gets some, but we all know how that's likely to turn out.

Series continues strong. Many series can become stale when they hit the 10 book mark, but Jim Butcher keeps it exciting and fresh. Character development happens slowly but steadily keeping you locked in and curious what Harry is going to do next.

I'm rereading this book and enjoying it very much.

Dresden is fighting off the Denarians again, has to work for the Winter Queen (much against his will), needs to rescue an old enemy, and to top it off, needs to fight off the Billy Goats Gruff--not something to joke about.

Harry Dresden owes Mab, the Winter Queen, two favors. She's here to collect one, but it's only a small favor that she needs and, as she assures him, baring "her delicately pointed canines. 'I am going to help you.'" "Yeah," as Harry notes, " This couldn't be good." And with little further ado they're off. The small favor requested of Wizard Dresden is that he find and rescue "Gentleman" Johnny Marcone, local hoodlum, dabbler in the supernatural, nemesis and sometime ally of Harry's, who's been kidnapped by the Order of the Blackened Denarians. Meanwhile, as if dealing with the baddest bad guys around isn't enough, the Summer Court is sending assassins right out of a fairy tale after Harry for some perceived hurt he did them at some point...It's complicated. And delicious. And really, really clever. The series gets darker and darker, yet loses none of its smart-ass snarkiness along the way. The usual suspects--apprentice Molly, Knights of the Cross Michael and Sanya, cop Karrin Murphy, et al--are along to help. The action is close to non-stop, and the ending is a doozy: several lives are irrevocably changed and you won't be able to wait to pick up the book eleven to find out what happens next.

Caution: This Review contains major spoilers. Proceed at your peril. This was a very good addition to the series. I would have loved more Thomas but I was just glad he was there at all (and in a Hummer, no less). Butcher really does a good job with their relationship. They're affectionate the way brothers should be, as affectionate as two people who had grown up together even though they didn't. I really do need to go back and read the book where Thomas was introduced. There's a reference to something I'd forgotten about. So, Thomas was good. I would have liked to see him at his work again. I'm really looking forward to the graphic novel that tells the story from his POV.It was good to see Murphy, too. I admit there's a part of me that still wants her to get together with Harry but I'm mostly okay that they aren't. think she may have her own weird little family with Kincaid and Ivy. Anastasia doesn't do much for me, but I don't hate her.I think it was pretty obvious from the beginning that Murphy would be offered a sword. I didn't expect her to turn it down, but I completely understand her reasons.I'm beginning to suspect that Harry might be in line for a sword himself. He's got a lot of grey in him, but still.I was okay with less of Molly and more of Michael. And Michael, God. I was sort of tearing up when he was shot but I started truly crying when Charity told Harry to sit down because he was family and family would be there. Because just--damn. I was like Harry, I expected Charity to be furious and that was just heartbreaking. Jim Butcher is a total bastard. But in a good way.And if Mab starts going after Thomas...man. That'll make things deliciously interesting and angsty.

Pretty good fast-moving story of a wizard detective fighting the forces of evil. I still could understand the story without having read the previous ones (I've only read the first one in the Harry Dresden series as a graphic novel). Nice bits of humor and good characters. I picked it up for free after a library book sale.

Harry, loves his friends. He always choses them over him. In this book he make that choice and it might be wrong. He may have brought about their death. Harry is brought before some evil Damarians(sp ?), trying to take the power and do terrible things with it. Mouse and Mister are a treat as usual. He has his normal circle of friends with some interesting visitors.
Favorite line-“It’s cute,” I whispered to Murphy. “He has a teddy Glock.”

This one took a while to finish because I had to get serious about school things instead of plowing through novels like candy, but I digress (it became my reading for the bus, 40 minutes a day). I really liked this one, probably because it combined the Fae and the Denarian plots.

I also totally called Murphy having the ability to be one of the Knights of the Cross ages ago. .

It is amazing how much action this book packs into it. Many characters from previous books are drawn into each other's paths. The Denarians are back, and Queen Mab's second favor puts Harry directly into their path. The introduction of the Billy Goats Gruff is very entertaining, and we get to see a demonstration of the awesome power of the tiny Archive. Pure fun.

[Cross-posted to Knite Writes]Yet another great installment of The Dresden Files! I thought this book was excellent. To begin with, Butcher brings back a host of the most interesting characters from past books. One of the things I really like about Butcher is that he always includes the right characters at the right times — he keeps the most frequently recurring characters in a constant state of development but doesn’t let the less frequently occurring characters stagnate. They keep developing off stage, and when they return, they return with new dimensions added to their personalities: new goals, new motivations, new powers. The plot of this book, too, was very well thought out and well executed. Butcher managed to integrate several plot points from different past books into a cohesive continuation for this installment. Everything from the Faerie Courts to the Denarians to Thomas — Butcher doesn’t settle for just focusing on one supernatural element at a time. He’s been gradually building a complex supernatural world since book one of the series, and now, the different powers that be are starting to interact with one another at several levels, which makes for a far more interesting and engaging overarching plot line.Like usual, this book leaves several threads hanging and includes a generous helping of foreshadowing about the scale of events to come in the following installments — but at the same time, the majority of the book’s events are cleanly wrapped up and the aftermath is discussed in-depth before the story’s close. Butcher maintains the careful balance between cliffhanger territory and an overly firm conclusion, giving you enough tantalizing info to want to dive into the next book without leaving too much of the book’s plot open-ended.In conclusion, Small Favor is yet another win for Butcher.
