About this audiobook

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best-but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option-even if the task is impossible.

Because this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad.

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other-and pull her to the razor's edge of passion. Even if the hunt does not destroy her, succumbing to Raphael's seductive touch just might. For when archangels play, mortals break.

The character Ellie portrays a rags to independence story. She's crude belligerent disrespectful and distrusting. By the end of book she had me rooting for Ellie. Well written.

Angels' Blood is a story about a guild hunter named Elena who is hired by an archangel, named Raphael. Elena's task is to to hunt down a rouge and murderous archangel, named Uram. This is an adult paranormal romance, so there's violence and sex and I enjoyed most of it.

There was one line that was misogynistic and I didn't really like that. The main character constantly made poor decisions that put herself in danger and that was really tiresome. Other than those two things, I enjoyed everything else in this book.

This book has action, spicy scenes, and funny banter between the main character and her love interest.

I'm giving this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

Book 1 in the Guild Hunter series by New Zealand author Nalini Singh. Guild hunter Elena Deveraux is used to tracking down vampires trying to opt out of the hundred years of servitude that is the angels' price for immortality. But this time she is hired by the dangerously beautiful Archangel of New York City, Raphael, to track a supremely deadly archangel, Uram, gone bad. Elena is a fighter and unable to treat the powerful archangel Raphael and his immortal vampire cadre with the submissive deference that they expect. Her unwillingness to submit captures Raphael's interest and he soon begins to pursue Elena. This is a great twist on the vampire genre with the addition of earth bound angels. A great cast of characters include deadly vampires Dmitri and Venom, Illium the gorgeous flirtatious blue-winged angel with a weakness for mortals, angel spymaster Jason, and Elena's fellow hunters Sara and Ransom. Enjoyable.

I could not get through this narration at all. After about 15 minutes I got so annoyed by the vocal fry that the narrator puts in nearly each and every word and is especially noticeable at the end of each sentence. Completely ruined it for me.

Reading this for a fantasy romance readalong.

I liked everything but the romance? All of the vampires and angels are total assholes, but that doesn't bother me considering I reread the Black Jewels series on a regular basis. The angel/vampire relationship felt a bit flimsy, but I can chalk that up to it being urban fantasy that's trying to be edgy. The only other thing that grated on me was that we always knew what Elena was wearing, but never what anybody else was.

But the murder-mystery-ish feeling was fine. Elena's backstory was interesting enough. The other assholes working for Raphael were at least consistent in being amusing douches.

But really, the romance aspect is the thing that really rubbed me the wrong way. Raphael is a total controlling douche who has mind-reading/control to add to his list of ways-to-control-the-weak-female. He won't listen when she tells him to stop, and everybody gets offended when Elena tries to protect herself from him (how dare she!). He was really really bad in the first half of the book, but it became consensual enough in the second half that I didn't have to throw my Kindle across the room.

I probably would have loved this in high school.

Elena Deveraux is a vampire hunter. She is hired to retrieve vampires who have jumped their contracts with Angels or who have otherwise broken the law. Elena is a born hunter who has been disowned by her father because she doesn't fit into his social and business positions. She was a survivor of an attack by a rogue vampire when she was a child. Her two older sisters were killed and her mother later committed suicide. Elena is haunted by that time which lost her her family and her safe life. Now an adult, Elena is contracted to a hunt by the Archangel of New York. Raphael is powerful, immortal, beautiful, and completely in charge. The brutality of some of his actions make him someone to be feared. Elena also fears him and doesn't want to come to his attention. But the Archangels have a problem: one of their own has fallen prey to blood lust. Uram can only be killed by another Archangel but it will take a talented hinter to find him. And Uram is leaving quite a trail of dead bodies and fear behind him. This is a paranormal romance. Therefore, Elena becomes fascinated with Raphael despite her fear and Raphael becomes intrigued with Elena because of her courage and determination no to become another notch on his bedpost. I enjoyed the worldbuilding in this story which introduces all powerful and immortal angels to the pantheon. The characters are well-developed. I liked Elena's circle of friends and Raphael's circle of angels and vampires.ANGELS' BLOOD is the first book in a series that has currently extended to 14 novels and 4 novellas with no end in sight.

This book was so strange. So utterly strange.

The central premise of this book is actually quite good. Angels are real. They have no discernible divine connection but they are paranormal creatures with huge lifespans, great physical strength, beautiful wings as well as the ability to fly and a few other abilities. They exist in full human view and knowledge, and though they do not directly rule, they are the power behind all the governments. They also create vampires. Vampires must serve angels for a contractual period and then can live their own lives. The immortality of vampirehood has caused many humans to want to become vampires.

I liked this idea. I was extremely curious as to how modern history was shaped by the existence of angels. Did they allow world wars? Industrialisation? Why? Unfortunately the author did not give so much as a hint towards these issues which was quite disappointing. It made the worldbuilding seem incomplete and glossed over.

The basic idea of this book is the protagonist, (who tracks down rogue vampires) is recruited by an angel for a special mission. But from that point on, the book goes completely off the rails. Everybody keeps on wanting and trying to have sex. Now I know this is a PNR book and this sort of thing is to be expected but it went to the point that the primary mission was almost derailed and seriously delayed due to adults having poor impulse control. A lot of the plot development kept on getting interrupted with people thinking of sex, hinting at sex, demanding sex, remembering urges to have sex, arguing about sex and of course having sex. It was like reading a book with softporn commercial breaks.

The conclusion of the book was more or less predictable.

So why did I give it two stars and not one star? Because I love loud explosive action in my urban fantasy and this did have that.

I just keep on feeling frustrated that the author has squandered such a promising premise. Even in this book there are future plot and world hints that are tantalising. Now if only the author cut back the sex from 50% of the plot to maybe 20% it would be a really interesting series.

And worst of all I am getting urges to try out the sequels. I don't even know why. This book may be spreading poor impulse control as a contagious disease.

I really don't know about this one. It had some good bits but it just felt rushed a bit on the first readthrough. I've now read it through again and it's better but I just didn't seem to originally get that inner sigh of contentment for finishing a d... fine book that I was hoping for.

It's SOOO clearly leading onto the sequel as well, not that there's anything wrong with that but I personally wonder whether the foreshadowing could have been replaced with further expansion of some scenes and consequently I'd have been happier with it.

Not a bad read at all though. Just not as good as I was hoping.

Angel's Blood was not as good as I thought it would be. Elena is a vampire hunter. She finds vampires and returns them to their master, the angel that created them. She has a special ability to scent vampires, which makes her unique. Raphael is the archangel of New York and requests her assistance to find an archangel gone bad.

This story never fully captured my attention, though there were many unusual aspects. Angels making vampires was an intriguing idea. The secrecy and mystery surrounding angels, especially archangels, was interesting. It was completely different than anything I've read lately. There was some action, some humor, and plenty of questions as to what exactly was wrong with the archangel gone bad. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to empathize with Elena nor was I able to really like Raphael. I understood that he wasn't human and wouldn't behave as a human does, but he was so cold and hard throughout most of the book. He redeemed himself in the end, but it was too late for me to warm up to him. I haven't decided if I'm going to read the next in the series yet.

Really awesome idea with angel's basically owning the vamps, and creating them as well. Interesting how the angels were portrayed. They were kind of evil, with no compassion. I think that's what made it interesting for me, because when I think of an angel I usually think of compassion and love. That was not the case with these angels. Elena is a guild hunter, she's "licensed to hunt vampires & assorted others". She born with the ability to smell vampires so she can track them better. She's a woman with a truly horrific life history. I think that's another thing that I really enjoyed about this book. It was horrific, and terrifying. I couldn't put it down.

This book was like Saw, meets CSI, meets angels/vamps, meets buffy, add a bit of sex and ta-daaa. If that doesn't say read me I don't know what else does.

    5 Stars

Elena Deveraux is a vampire hunter with a reputation for always finding her prey. Hired by the lethal archangel of New York, Raphael, to locate one of his ilk who has gone rogue, Elena soon realizes that the greatest threat to her life and her sanity may just be the very archangel with the key to her heart and her soul.

World building is one of Singh’s greatest skills and the world of the Guild Hunters is no exception. Her angels and vampires are original and compelling with angels that are anything but angelic and vampires that are so much more than simply vampiric.

Raphael’s arrogance, imperiousness and domineering attitude do not make for positive first impressions. Nevertheless, as the story progresses and his backstory emerges, it becomes clear that there is more to him than meets the eye and he slowly succeeds in winning you over with his mix of intense power, romantic gestures and pure sexiness.

Elena is a wonderful mix of strength and vulnerability that one cannot help but admire and empathize with. She also has a serious problem with her mouth getting ahead of her brain, which gets her into some rather sticky situations with Raphael and his men.

The secondary cast comprised of Raphael’s fellow archangels with their own personal agendas, the men who are loyal to him unto death as well as Elena’s self-absorbed family and her steadfast colleagues at the Guild are all fleshed out just enough to keep you guessing and whet your appetite for more.

In terms of the audiobook, Justine Eyre’s narration is captivating. While she may not be to everyone’s liking, her throaty voice resonates with me and she manages to capture the essence of all of the characters, male and female.

All in all, a fantastic introduction to the series with a straightforward plot, a psychotic villain and a final twist at the end, which ensures that I will be continuing with the series sooner rather than later.

Angels' Bloodby Nalini Singh#1 Guild HuntersAudio narrated by Justine Eyre4-1/2*Vampire hunter, Elena Deveraux, is hired by a cadre of seven ruling archangels to help track down an ancient one who has become blood borne, gone rogue, and has fallen into the depths of insanity, murdering countless innocents. Standing her ground because of her inimitable pride and facing off with those more powerful than her has caught the attention of the archangel, Raphael. Something about the two of them together seems fated as she makes him more mortal and as they face an ultimate battle with their enemy, Raphael may be the only one able to save her in the end. This is reminiscent of the Anita Blake, vampire hunter, series as well as Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress novels as far as having courageous, kick-butt heroines who have something special that draws the unconquerable males to them without fail. This was a quick read, and a great start to this series.

"Some things were worth the dance with danger." --Nalini Singh, Angel's BloodThis book started out as a 3 star rating for me, and by the second half it worked its way up to a four star rating. Then came the five star ending, which I really liked. I figure it rounded itself out to a solid four and half stars. This is my second audiobook, and the narrator had a accent for Elena's(mc) voice which I found weird at first but eventually really came to like her narration style. She did other voices excellently. This is the first book in the Guild Hunter's Series, by Nalini Singh. This story gives a lot of background for the series, and I found a source on the internet that lists all the characters in the series. It can be found here...Guild Hunter Character Guide. This helped me immensely to keep all the characters organized in my head, especially since I was listening on Audio. The world of the Guild Hunter Series is complex one. There are the archangels, the angels, the vampires, and the Guild Hunters. Angels rule over humans and vampires, but the most powerful of them all are the archangels. Beautiful. Deadly. Sometimes cruel. Always unpredictable. Angel's Blood is about human/guild hunter Elena and archangel Raphael...it is a story of how they meet...but it is only the beginning of their story...looking forward to more of it.

This was a decent start to this paranormal romance series. In general this was a pretty typical paranormal romance. The main heroine, Elena, has special Hunter powers that make her stronger than normal and overworks herself like crazy (like many UF and PNR heroines). The male lead, Raphael, is your typical over protective alpha male (although he tries to temper himself to allow Elena room). I enjoyed Elena’s relationship with her best friend; they have a funny and cute friendship that added a lot to the story.I did enjoy the reimaging of a world run by angels and how vampires related to the angels; the explanation behind this was well done. I also enjoyed the twist the story took at the end. Overall this was an engaging read but not all the different from many of the other PNR series out there. I thought some of the elements in the world were interesting (angles and how vampires relate to them). I didn’t really enjoy Raphael as a character all that much...too alpha male, but I know a lot of PNR readers dig that. I enjoyed the book well enough but am not sure if I will continue the series or not at this point.

Archagels rule the vampire world, Guild hunters take care of the problems the angels don't.. Ellie is a hunter, turned out by her family, hardened from life. She is assigned to work with an Archangel to solve a problem that will most likely lead to her death. He is sexy, beautiful and has little feelings for life. The conflicts of working together may be to much.. to many secerts.. to much danger from a killer Acrchangel and from the very one that hired her.

I also read this book a couple of months ago. I am currently trying to catch up on reviews. So sorry for the delay. On to the review!

I have been a fan of Ms. Singh's psy-changeling series for a very long time so I finally decided to read this book because of my serious love of that series. This is serious isn't as engrossing as that one in my opinion but it is still excellent in it's own right.

I love the strength of Elena, she is all about fight and I love that in my heroines. I also love the complete unapologetic ruthlessness of Raphael. He is completely comfortable being exactly who he is and the epitome of an alpha male. I enjoyed the sensual tension between these characters, they are both so strong and such fighters, it was so nice to watch them fight each other and their emotions.

The world this book is set in is interesting. It take the vampires/angels plots and moves them around enough to not be out of the genre but also enough to be new and fresh. I will continue on in this series.

Well this was my first adventure into Singh's style. I thought her world building was excellent. Angels and vampires living amongst us! Cool. The story of a rogue archangel on the loose kept me turning pages. Unfortunately the romance kept dragging the story down. I liked both the hero and heroine but didn't really care if they hooked up or not. The scenes of them together weren't all that smoldering and I would've preferred a fade to black rather than something lackluster. The other characters especially Illium with his love for mortals and gorgeous blue wings, kept me turning pages.

I'll continue with the series because I like the world and the story coming up next brings together three things I can't get enough of angels, vampires and zombies! I'm also hoping the romance factor gets an energy boost too.

My first Singh book after many a recommendation from friends. Okay, the whole alpha male thing will always bug me. It's not my bag and I knew that going into this book. Having said that, I really liked the world-building. It was an interesting combination of ideas and mythos both familiar and less so, it intrigued me and really held the novel together when the central romance just bored me. Definitely an example of how good PNR can be, even if the romance was the low point for me.

Alledgedly, Nalini Singh writes sexy paranormal fantasy. In reality, she writes pretty bland, non-erotic, non-romantic paranormal fantasy. The main character, Elena, is dull and always insists on being in control. The male lead, the Arcangel Raphael, is arrogant and sex-obsessed. Like the worst of the teen paranormal "romance" we have here the situation where the two seems to switch between hating one another, being fascinated by each other's sexy looks and smells and trying to kill one another or threatening one another. Totally dysfunctional. This is not what romance is about. And even the sex scenes are insipid. On several occasions I would have set it aside had anything better been on hand, but as it was I soldiered on through and it did pick up the pace towards the end although, honestly, I couldn't see the attraction. She may be a New York Times Bestselling author, but she doesn't rate on my list of "Paranormal romance/thriller" writers.
Still, maybe her Psy Changeling series will be better. I made the mistake of reserving them both from the library and now I feel committed to read them.
