Fire with Fire

This book was interesting, but the second book had me shook.....the plot twists got me. THE 2ND BOOK.....I recommend it. YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT HIT YOU

After reading Burn for Burn, I wanted to see what would happen next; especially, since the book ended on a cliffhanger. So off I went to pick up Fire with Fire, the second book in the series. The writing is still great and some of my questions were answered, but I’m not sure what happened here.

To start off with, Fire with Fire had no business being 500 pages long. It really didn’t. Even though the writing was smooth and helped provided for a fast read, there were times when the book dragged on and on and on. Normally, this wouldn’t bother me. If a book is long, then that’s great as long as it has enough content to sustain it. But Fire with Fire didn’t. Unlike Burn for Burn which had only one revenge plot, Fire with Fire had one. And it wasn’t even as intricate as the former plans, why? Simple. Because only Lillia is the one doing things here, while Mary and Kat take a backseat in this revenge plot and in the book in general.

After Reeve’s seizure in the last book, Kat, Lillia, and Mary are reeling from this mishap. They wanted to get him back, but didn’t want a seizure to happen. He ends up okay and the girls are still in the clear. Things should be great, but Mary can’t help but feel like Reeve still didn’t pay his due. Why? Well, it’s because Reeve made her fall for him and then broke her heart. So the girls decide to go John Tucker. Lillia will make him fall for her, which isn’t that hard since it was clear he liked her since the first book, and then she will break his heart.

Things happen, Rennie becomes distant from Lillia. Kat is non-existent and doesn’t really do much in this novel, and Mary is still craycray. Unlike the last book where each girl had their time to shine, it didn’t really work like that here. This was mostly about Lillia, who I’ve come to dislike through this book. She’s a very human character and grew in this book, but I started to see her as selfish and not as nice as she thinks she is. Alex still loves her and even though she knows this, she still leads him on. Rennie is angry with her and instead of talking to her, she fights back. With Rennie, I suppose that’s fine since she does need to be taken down a peg or two, but I kept waiting for the two of them to discuss what happened that night with the college guys.

One of the problems I had with the last book was that Lillia never mentioned her rape. To me, her rape was the reason why she wanted revenge against Alex, Rennie, and Reeve. With Alex, she felt like he was taking advantage of her little sister. With Rennie, Lillia felt like she didn’t get any help when the rape happened. And with Reeve, she feels like he took advantage of Mary and now she wants to protect her. However, this is speculation on my end because it was never mentioned in the book.

Thankfully, it’s mentioned a lot more here. The problem with this is that she never talked to Rennie about it, or even thought that Rennie may have been raped as well. When Kat brings it up, Lillia quickly dismisses this thought, and that didn’t sit well with me. Even though Rennie is a jerk, it was clear that night affected her a great deal and Lillia overlooked it and never reached out.

Also, the plan with her and Reeve was boring. I get that he loves her; it was obvious since the spin the bottle game from the last book, but Lillia finds herself falling for him too, except, this isn’t explained well. Instead, it feels like she only wants him because he wasn’t letting her in. At one point, she felt like he was lying to her and just yanking her chain, so she gets angry....despite the fact that she is essentially doing the exact same thing.

We also learned about Mary’s supernatural powers and even though this annoyed me in the first book, I actually liked the reveal here. It makes the next book sound really interesting, especially since Lillia started to fall for Reeve and Mary clearly doesn’t appreciate that. However, before this reveal happened, she was pretty much a stalker. And kind of creepy and needy. And really pathetic. In a sad, obsessive kind of way. I don’t like her very much, but I do want to see what happens to her in the next book.

As for Kat, something happened with university applications and it does seem like Rennie wants to be her friend again, but that never really happens. Despite being a narrator and one of the main characters, she really felt secondary towards the entire thing.

This book also ends with a cliffhanger, which is kind of annoying; especially, since this one felt a bit cheap. Considering what we know about Mary, this may end up really exiting in the next novel, but I don’t really have my hopes up.

Burn for Burn was fun, but Fire with Fire is just disappointing. It is a credit to the writing that I was able to continue reading this, which is why I'm still going to read Ashes to Ashes, the next book in the series. Sadly, Fire with Fire wasn't as good as its predecessor. Hopefully, this is a case of the second book drop and things get better with Ashes to Ashes.

Oh, for God's sake! Why can Lilia and Cat AND Reni see Mary? Why did Reeve recognize her? Why is Lilia in love with Reeve? Is Reni going to come back as a ghost in the next book? (I listened to this book so I may have the spellings of names wrong.)

This is a great case to show why I usually will try something more than once before giving up on it for good. I previously tried to start this series, and I was just not in the mood for it. I ended up reading around 50% of the first book and did not finish it. I could not get into it or the high school cattiness. I own all three books and decided to give it one more try before giving it away. I am glad I did.I ended up enjoying this so much more than I was expecting. I liked learning more around each of our main characters and their stories. This does deal with some series issues such as drugs, bullying, suicide, and rape. I did not realize it was going to cover all of these topics when I gave up on it the first time. If you are struggling to get through the beginning, try to push through as it was worth it to me.I have seen so many people talk about this series, and do not remember anyone saying this deals with the paranormal. I was not sure what direction this was going to take with that, but it did not take the path I thought. I was shocked with the twist. I was expecting a Carrie vibe to happen. It may in book three, but we will find out. Kats story was really emotional and hit to close to home. I also had a sick parent, and this just tore at my heart!That ending! So happy I have the next book, as I plan to jump right back into to find out how this will all end.

This sequel to Burn for Burn kept me interested. The ending makes me want to read the next one. It was like a 3.5.

Like the first book, I felt this was good, but not great. I enjoyed it while I read it but it's simply largely forgettable.

Fire with Fire is definitely one of those sequels that I enjoyed more than the first book. The stakes are higher, and a whole lot of crap goes down.

The characters grow some from the last novel after the way events played out. But they are still up to the crazy antics to make people pay. And it seems like Reeve isn’t as awful as we thought he was in the first book. He’s still a total douchebag at times, but he hurts under all that sarcasm. I do think the way certain people feel about Lillia will cause a shift in this trio of friends in the next book.

And that ending. Holy crap!!!! I can’t wait to read Ashes to Ashes.

Continuation of Lillia, Kat, and Mary and the fallout from their quest for revenge. Story picks up where Burn for Burn left off and there's more in store for the cast of characters. Reeve is working his way back from his injuries and Rennie is still being the queen. So Lillia, Kat, & Mary decide to continue with retribution. But as always it gets complicated along the way when things aren't what they seem and feelings and emotions creep in. Surprise ending that sets up the third of this trilogy. Good read that keeps you turning the pages to see what happens next.

I can’t believe how stupid I was. I misjudged this book by its cover simply thinking that it was a typical romance high school drama. I thought it was cliché. Oh boy, how wrong was I…Fire with fire starts exactly where it left us in Burn for burn. The Homecoming Dance. A perfect revenge plan and a total failure of it.Lillia, Kat, and Mary totally fail to accomplish their plan and they only worry become how to get away with it. The consequences are pretty bad - Reeve is injured and our sweet girls feel that it’s their fault. Due to his injury Reeve might lose his scholarship to collage and he is determined to get back on track. As I said, it’s good that these girls feel bad about that because as we all learned - Karma is a bitch. And she always finds you.And I have to tell you that I'm not generous with high ratings. It has to be really impressing to make me give a high rating, but this time this book managed to do it. Even if this book looks like one of these fluffy romance reads it is very enjoyable and well written. We have three narrative voices that are very different, but also unique and very likable. I could connect to the characters, care for them and hope that everything will work out. The subject is also very compelling. Maybe my love for all twisted and mean things played a huge part in it, but this book filled up my expectations. Also, have I mentioned how I love mean girls? This, probably, says about me a lot of bad things, but I don't fucking care. I know what kind of ugly truth they hide and I can sympathize with them. Life always fucks you and you have to protect yourself. Sometimes the only way to do it, is just to be mean.This time we have a whole bunch of mixed feelings and things that unfold into the further events. After the failed revenge Lillia, Kat, and Mary still want to make Reeve pay for everything. But now their revenge plan is absolutely different and more delicate. They want to make him fall in love with Lillia and then crush his heart after. That’s how everything should be.Only it’s more complicated than it looks, actually. Lillia is the one who has to do it and she starts to doubt her own feelings for Reeve who actually isn’t an ass. In this book, Reeve transforms into a different kind of guy, the one who hides behind his arrogance and bad behavior. And considering what Reeve did in the past nothing should be forgiven for him, by no means. Only as I said - it is more complicated because we get to know him...Our two girls are also not in the best situation too. Even when Lillia has a whole spotlight now, they have important things to do too. Kat is still trying to get the hell out of Jar Island and now seriously takes actions. She still has feelings for Alex who is torn away not just between two girls, but also his dreams what to do with his life. There remains and Mary who still tries to figure the whole thing out and understand her own life that is full of mysteries, longing and complex feelings for Reeve. And Rennie, Lilia’s best friend, who is drifting away from her, trying to stay on the top and losing everything only because her best friend. And Rennie plays a very huge part in this story, maybe even the hugest.Kat is still my favorite character because of her strong voice and kickass attitude, but Lillia has really grown on me too. And our sweet, poor Mary – I don’t even know what to say about her. A lot of things make a sense now. And I have a feeling Mary will have her star hour in the third book, I don’t even doubt that.So let me tell you guys, I thought the book was pretty good until the end when I was literally blown away! It was so unexpected, so fast and left me with a hanging jaw and screaming what the fuck did just happen?!!! in the worst possible way. I can tell you I wanted to grab the first book and reread it all over again just to see the story in clear eyes. I don’t want to spoil and I’m asking you not to read the third book synopsis because it will take a very important part away. I’m asking you to discover this blindly as I did. You only understand this in the end when everything will be put into the pieces. So many things will make sense after.I’m closing this with this lineEye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, burn for a burn. A broken heart for a broken heart. I can’t wait until the third book. Thank God, it will be published in less than a month.

Did this series change genres when I wasn't looking? Strange direction taken by the authors for the last half of the book - will probably necessitate me rereading the first book to see if there were hints I missed.

Once I finished the first book in the series (Burn for Burn), there was absolutely no way that I couldn't pick up Fire with Fire. The page length scared me a bit considering it was about 150 pages more than the first book but It was absolutely worth it. Even with the full 500 pages this book had, there weren't any moments where I felt bored or like the story line was unnecessary. Getting to know all the characters and becoming very immersed in their lives is exactly what was done in this book, and then the end just pulls the rug out from under you and you're left flipping back and wondering how you didn't see it coming. This book, in my opinion, exceeded the first book in all levels; plot, character development, writing, everything. I'm so pleased with how Jenny and Siobhan continued the story of Mary, Lillia and Kat and all the other characters. I'm definitely looking forward to picking up Ashes to Ashes and seeing how this trilogy will end!

I thought I was read just a regular teen novel. No. She's a goddamn ghost.

I dove into Fire with Fire the very day I got it. I loved Burn for Burn and I was anxious to see what would happen next, although I wasn’t sure exactly what direction the series was heading. Fire with Fire far exceed my expectations. It was impossible to put down, full of twists and turns, and even better than Burn for Burn!By the end of Burn for Burn, I pretty much hated every character except for Lindy. I was certainly sympathetic to them all in one way for another, but it didn’t stop me from thinking that they were all basically bad people. By the end of Fire with Fire, the only characters I truly couldn’t stand were Rennie and, surprisingly, Mary. Everyone else (including Reeve) is now on my list of good people and characters I’ll always love (except for Kat, who has only been elevated to like). As much as I love the characters, the plot was possibly even better —it’s just so good! It’s hard to say whether or not I think the plot or the characters are stronger, but they are both defiantly fantastic! Fire with Fire still has a plot that is revenge driven, but it has stronger notes of forgiveness. The end of the novel was so incredibly thrilling, that I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! This book is just 100% un-put-downable. I have so many theories and ideas for what might happen in the final novel and I am so anxious to see where everything truly ends up going.Fire for Fire is an epic follow up to Burn for Burn. This is one of those books that I will certainly be recommending to everyone I know. It is such an emotional and thrilling read! From the mystery surrounding Mary to the unexpected romances and the overwhelming need for vengeance, Fire with Fire has a little bit of something for everyone. This is one series that simply cannot be missed.
