About this audiobook
The X-Men meets Ocean's Eleven in this edge-of-your-seat sci-fi adventure about a band of "super" criminals.
When the MK virus swept across the planet, a vaccine was created to stop the epidemic, but it came with some unexpected side effects. A small percentage of the population developed superhero-like powers. Seventeen-year-old Ciere Giba has the handy ability to change her appearance at will. She's what's known as an illusionist...She's also a thief.
After a robbery goes awry, Ciere must team up with a group of fellow super-powered criminals on another job that most would consider too reckless. The formula for the vaccine that gave them their abilities was supposedly destroyed years ago. But what if it wasn't?
The lines between good and bad, us and them, and freedom and entrapment are blurred as Ciere and the rest of her crew become embroiled in a deadly race against he government that could cost them their lives.
A Hachette Audio production.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fun read, a lot like The Rook, highly recommend it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great characters with lots of depth and a plot that keeps you intrigued throughout
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I hadn't realized this was an adolescent-lit kind of book because I didn't look into it enough before I started it. Still, because the general premise was decent, and because I wanted to finish what I started, I stuck it out. It's jam-packed with cliches ("Let me get this straight, you want to...") and familiar tropes, excessive exposition and predictable revelations. But it has a modicum of charm, and I wouldn't be surprised if younger readers might get a kick out of it.
The narrators ranked somewhere between average and bad. The attempt at the British accent was almost enough to make me stop the book altogether. Neither narrator had much life in their voice, or any particular feel for any of the characters. I've heard worse narration, but these two folks certainly didn't do the story any favors. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this book. At first I wasn’t sure I was going to cause it was different than I am used to and I had a hard time adjusting to it but I am glad I kept listening. I recommend it. The narrator was great too. A bad narrator can destroy a great book or make a so-so book better.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I liked the world, I liked the setup. Unlike other listeners, I didn’t find the “British” accent to be so far obnoxious as to be a deterrent at all. I liked that there’s an opportunity for more books, I would absolutely listen to a second book. I liked the protagonist, I appreciated the crew. While some things were typical, all books have some forms of the basic story line in them - this one did not suffer for it as many others I’ve listened to/read have.
The writing was good, the dialog was good, the plot was interesting, it had a couple of unexpected twists. It was entertaining. Not a work of art, not a masterpiece for the ages, but it was a solid effort. I only wish I could write as well.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I've had this book on my TBR for almost two years and I randomly decided to finally pick it up. This story was so much fun! I really loved the world and enjoyed the characters. The story had a lot of action and the plot was super interesting. I'd describe it as White Collar (the crime side of things) meets X-Men. My only complaint was there was ONE prominent female character. The only other females were merely mentioned or appeared on only a couple of pages. I really liked Ciere but it was just so weird for there not to be any other girls???? I liked the guy characters, don't get me wrong, but like.... why?? Also, if Magnus and Kit don't end up as a couple, that is a mISSED OPPORTUNITY. If you're gonna subject me to the patriarchy, there better be some queer love.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5If you can get over the narrator not being able to say the letter "T" when it is in a word, it's not a bad book. I don't know if it's a regional thing or a speech problem or if they just thought it sounded young but when she says words like "written" it's "wri-in" and "bitten" is "bih-in." Distracting to the point that I wouldn't have listened if it wasn't free. The story itself is ok. I didn't like the ending much, it felt overwrought and the same phrase is repeated over and over way too many times. I don't read a lot of YA so perhaps this is a common thing. There should have been more character development, the main character can suddenly do something she's struggled with for a really flimsy reason that's way too convenient. I am curious about some of the minor characters but not enough to listen to other books in the series unless they happen to be free.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5overdone... interesting idea that you just want the story to get on with already, and then please just end.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5The book might be ok. The audio version is beyond awful. The "British" accent puts Dick van Dyke to shame.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I thought it was pretty entertaining. Not perfect, the main character kind of repeats herself a lot when she’s thinking, but other than that I enjoyed it. The different ‘adverse effects’ powers were cool, and I liked the rest of the characters.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5It seemed like a book with a decent plot, but I couldn't get past the narrator. Unbearable.
