But in saving his life, she gets more than she bargained for. Sam is working undercover for the Paranormal Investigations Team, and those who are trying to murder him are actually humans infected by a plague-like virus, the Crimson Death-- a by-product of a failed government experiment that attempted to identify the enzymes that make vampires immortal. I'm not a huge fan of this book. The mythology behind the phoenixes was really amazing, and the action/mystery was decent, which is why I gave it three stars.

BUT the writing really irritated me. It had some flaws I would usually associate with teen fantasy. The biggest irritant was the heroine, Emberly's, constant mentions of her ex's new "darkness". It was too abstract and repetitive. I swear, she mentioned it about a hundred times. ONCE WAS ENOUGH. And she did the same thing with her feelings about him, just droning on and on and on. And she did that super annoying thing characters often do- here is a paraphrasing of Emberly in a particular scene- "Oh, my white t-shirt is all wet, but there's no way Sam will look because he hates me now!" I mean, really? It's absolutely delusional and fake. I hate it when characters stubbornly go on and on about how an ex has no feelings for them anymore when it is OBVIOUSLY NOT TRUE. It's either extreme false modesty or absolute delusion. And finally, her setting. She picked Melbourne, Australia (where I live) which is a really tough one- it's not like writing about somewhere in the US or UK, most people will have no idea what the city is like. And Keri didn't really help with that- she kept throwing out random street names and places without giving the reader any sense of what they looked like or what atmosphere they had. Even as a resident of Melbourne, I WAS CONFUSED. I had no sense of the setting at all.

Anyway, this book was an OK read that I'd recommend if you're at a loss for new reading material, but it felt like more of a C-list book to me.
Which is a real shame, as I really wanted to like the book because of its Australian author and Melbourne setting- there's not much fantasy out there set in Australia. In any case, because of this I might give some of her other series a try- surely they must be better? She has so many books out there, all with decent Goodreads ratings, so I feel like there really has to be something more in her works that I'm missing with this book.

All in all I enjoyed this read. I liked a strong female character but I did feel like she needed to just move along already with all the break-up angst. The author did a great job at keeping me engaged enough to ask questions. I also like a unique paranormal/UF premise.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:--Actual rating 4.5 SkullsFireborn kicks off a new UF series for the wonderful Keri Arthur, and it was so very Keri. :) What do I mean by that? If you're a diehard fan of Keri's series like I am, you'll find another strong, independent heroine that needs sex to survive, romance partners that aren't quite fated to be but work so very well, action aplenty, plot twists that surprise, world building that shows incredible promise to grow, and a character cast that you can't help but love. But while Fireborn had all of the things that I adore in a Keri Arthur book, it also had a new and interesting mythos - the Phoenix - which are cursed, an apocalyptic-type conflict in the form of a immortality virus gone horribly wrong, numerous 'big bads' that are exciting in their own right, and some surprises that are right there for the taking but never quite revealed. Yet. ;-)I am really excited to see where Keri takes this series, and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment. I would definitely recommend this book for ALL Keri Arthur fans and urban fantasy fans that like their story arcs broad and building, their heroines feisty and strong, a bit of conflict in the love department, and plenty of action and intrigue.

Unlike the author’s Riley Jenson and Dark Angels series, while still in a world with vampires and shifters, this world, also set in Australia, appears to have a different take on other species, which ones are known about by humans and the policing force that handles non-humans.Emberly Pearson is a phoenix, meaning she’s a spirit of fire that takes a human form, a fire form and can also shift into a firebird. She’s lived a number of lifetimes with Rory, her phoenix soul partner, and they need each other to survive, but the species is cursed to never be in a loving relationship. Each lifetime she finds a man she loves, but her heart is broken every time. When Emberly dreams about the death of Sam, a cop she’d fallen for who dumped her five years ago because he assumed she was cheating on him with Rory, she saves his life and finds herself in the middle of a drama involving a new scary breed of a type of vampire, the murder of her boss, issues with Sam, an investigation with a fire fae and a whole lot of trouble. Each of the Riley Jensen stories was an individual story itself. This one, not so much as the only conclusion to this first book is surviving a major confrontation and establishing a relationship to go forward with tackling a rather large ongoing threat.Plenty of drama and action as trouble follows Emberly at every turn. The author’s characters are never shy about casual sex, so we also get some pretty steamy scenes and sexual tension. And thankfully, while well-written, we don’t get explicit details each and every time. The phoenix aspect is unique to any other urban fantasy story I’ve ever read and Emberly is both smart and capable, and doesn't back down. The main characters are both likeable as well as interesting, as is the threat being faced.I found it to be an enjoyable read that was difficult to put down and the next story will be an automatic pre-order.

Reviewed by: Rabid ReadsWerewolves, vampires, shifters, fae, mermaids, witches—you name it, I’ve read about ‘em—in fact, I didn’t think that there was a paranormal out there that I hadn’t met, until Keri Arthur’s phoenixes. Now, I’m sure she’s probably not the first writer ever to feature them, but throw in some fascinatingly unique mythology, a different spin on vamps, and three strong fictional crush candidates, and you have one fiery series debut. This seasoned author never disappoints with her trademark writing style, rich world-building, and complex relationships, however I was a little frustrated that the heroine gets kidnapped several times in one novel. I hope that these books won’t be a repeat of Arthur’s DARK ANGELS in that respect. But, that minor annoyance aside, I really enjoyed FIREBORN and can’t wait to get my grabby hands on the next installment!SOULS OF FIRE and I immediately hit it off; I loved learning about this new universe, and was thrilled with how in depth their lore was explored. Phoenixes have three forms—human, bird, and flame—go through “rebirth” every one hundred years, and have some pretty impressive abilities. Mind you, there are a few major drawbacks to being a fire bird including a nasty witchy curse that’s made true love impossible, they need another phoenix to survive, and living thousands of lifetimes isn’t always all that it’s cracked up to be. But, the world-building doesn’t stop there with additional mythology surrounding fire Fae, vampires, Red Cloaks, and a few mystery supes as well. I was in paranormal heaven! As far as heroines go, I really liked Emberly; she’s level-headed, quick on her toes, and knows how to throw down. Surprisingly, she still holds out hope that one day she’ll find her soul mate, and I loved that her quasi immortality hasn’t made her bitter despite past failures. Rory is Pearson’s co-phoenix, but because of the curse their relationship is rather complicated; they need each other yet can never click romantically. And, therein lies the problem because any potential suitor must be able to accept that there’s always going to be another man in Emberly’s life. Sam, her ex, left her for that very reason without waiting for an explanation, so I had serious issues with him from the get-go, but on the flip side, I couldn’t exactly fault his logic either. Then add a smexy fire Fae into the mix, and readers are left with a whole lot of man-candy to drool over. When I first started this book, I wasn’t exactly sure where Arthur was going to go with her phoenixes, but by the end I had a good sense of the main story arc. As in her other series’, the investigative angle is strong, and I enjoyed following this novel’s breadcrumbs. The Sindicati are formidable foes, and I look forward to seeing how the Crimson Death thread plays out as well, not to mention there’s something funky going on with Sam. I already have SO many questions, and this is only the first installment! Earlier I expressed my concerns about this author’s over-utilized kidnapping card, but I was somewhat consoled by the fact that Emberly is extremely difficult to contain. Here’s hoping that she won’t be another helpless victim like Risa Jones.FIREBORN is book one in a red hot new series that’s destined to become an Urban Fantasy favourite; if you’re tired of the same ol’, then look no further than Keri Arthur’s SOULS OF FIRE.

I have been a fan of Keri Arthur's work since I devoured her Riley Jenson series. FIREBORN is the first book in an all new series. EMBERLY is an interesting character with an even more interesting background. Her being a phoenix was unique and I loved learning about her and her soul mate. I did find the whole soul mate but not love compatible thing a little complicated but it added a little bit of extra drama to the story and her sex life is definitely interesting because of it. The ex who Emberly loved and lost comes off as a bit of an asshole but as you get the back story all becomes clear. Neither of them can really be at fault for who they are and what they believe in. It seems as though they might be in each others lives for a long time to come so I am interested to see what comes of their new situation in future books. Then there is the new lover. He is pretty much a booty call but Emberly has to work closely with him to solve the mystery of the story and by the end they enter a whole new partnership together. Should be interesting. With the amount of background and plot set up FIREBORN was a great start to the Souls of Fire series. I see lots of action, drama, and sexiness in our future. * This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
