What fun to read a book in the so-called Romance genre that overflows with humor, fun, plot twists, and memorable women! It offers the bonus of educating readers on both exhausting house renovation details and on recognizing styles of buildings. This is the first in a nice long series that expands into mystery, Islands, and the drama of existing in extreme heat and performing in challenging work conditions. It's inspiring to see each of the very different women grow in confidence and extend their pride to the men in their lives.

Not my usual type of book. A couple of the interactions between some of the characters were I felt contrived but an entertaining read none the less.

Ten Beach Road by Wendy WaxContemporary women’s fiction. 1st in the Ten Beach Road series. Three women, each having lost their life savings to a Ponzi scheme, inherit a portion of a beach house. Together, they decide to repair and renovate the house while dealing with life issues as a result of the changes in their lives. Managing life issues is no easy task. This book is at times heartbreaking, disquieting, and life affirming. The women are strong survivors and determined and that’s what makes this story worth reading. 3.5

Madeline, Avery and Nikki are all left without money after a Ponzi scheme takes all of their money. All they are left with is 1/3 of a dilapidated house in Florida. They all go to Florida planning to sell it. When they see it, they realize that it can't be sold without a lot of work. They decide to do the work themselves - since they can't afford to hire anyone to do it and in the process they become friends and learn all about each other. Add to the book a useless husband, jealous contractor, pregnant daughter, estranged mother and various other side stories and you have a perfect beach read. Its a fun book to read - nothing too deep but just fun.

Reviewer: StephanieBlurb: On the brink of ruin, three very different women discover themselves where they least expect...at Ten Beach Road.Madeline, Avery, and Nikki are strangers to one another, but they have one thing in common. They each wake up one morning to discover their life savings have vanished, along with their trusted financial manager... leaving them with nothing but co-ownership of a ramshackle beachfront house.Madeline Singer is a homemaker coping with empty-nest syndrome and an unemployed husband. Avery Lawford is an architect -- or was, until she somehow became the sidekick on her ex-husband's TV show. And professional matchmaker Nikki Grant is trying to recover from her biggest mistake...No one is going to save them but themselves. Determined to fight back, they throw their lots together and take on the challenge of restoring the historic beach house to its former glory. But just as they begin to reinvent themselves and discover the power of friendship, their secrets threaten to tear down their trust, and destroy their lives a second time.Review: Wendy Wax understands the most difficult of dilemmas regarding family, secrets, undying passion, and inner turmoil, and that makes her stand out as a writer. Carefully, she identifies three women with three different concerns and takes readers on a journey that highlights not only on how their problems are solved, but also the struggles the three women go through, in order to get there.A headlining Ponzi scheme involving Malcom Dyer leaves Maddie, Avery, and Nikki (among hundreds of others) abruptly penniless; they each now only have a beach house -- actually not even, since they each own a third of the beach house -- to their name. Bella Flora was once a majestic mansion overlooking the shore and the sunset, but today, its grounds are nothing short of ancient ruins. To destroy the house, or to rebuild it are the only options the three women have, so they decide to take the risk and spend one summer making Bella Flora beautiful again.Maddie needs to hang on, or else the rest of her family will fall apart. She's got an unemployed and quite depressed husband, an unmarried pregnant daughter, a college dropout son, and a ruthless mother-in-law on her hands. She needs to prevail with Bella Flora; it may be her last chance.Avery is famous for her looks as a Vanna White on her ex-husband's home improvement television show -- but she's the one with the architecture degree. Every cent her late father left her is gone, thanks to Dyer's theft, and having been abandoned by her biological mother as a young child, she's not sure where to turn. But suddenly, her mom and a childhood crush are both back in her life to offer help with Bella Flora, though Avery is certain she doesn't need it. Determined to fix the house and fight on her own, just the way she's been her whole life, Avery learns the lessons of forgiveness and honest love, both strong parts of her that could either lift her up or bring her down.Nikki's taking the loss the hardest, not only because no money means no more designer dresses and pretty car, but because Malcom Dyer is her brother. How can the man she's raised from a little boy (since their parents' deaths) commit such a monstrous act against her? Her fortune is gone and she is torn, but more importantly, she doesn't know how she'll cope with this ultimate betrayal.Ten Beach Road is the perfect summer beach read, but not because it's fluffy and romantic. Ten Beach Road weaves a complicated story that brings the lives of three prominent women together, and changes them forever as well. In each of the characters, Wax depicts expert emotion; she everything, from an adoring mother, to a frightened lover, to a self-conscious "power woman" who knows exactly how to personalize each of her characters.Relationships between mother and daughter, old acquaintances, and siblings brings sentiments of the breathtaking human life together, in Wax's novel. While reading, you feel like each of the characters are your own mother, your own sister, your own best friend. And by the end, you wish they actually were.Quote: "The words settled over her. [Madeline] hadn't thought in those terms, she'd just been plowing ahead trying to hang on. But Kyra's recognition was like a balm to her soul; one she hadn't realized she needed.'[I didn't realize how strong I was, either],' Maddie said. 'You don't really know what you're made of until things fall apart.' "Source: Directly from publicist via Romancing the Book for review.

Ten Beach Road is a glorious testiment to the strength and loyalty of women! Wendy Wax has delved into the rituals and reasons beneath the friendships of women and written a story that reminds all girls to never underestimate the power of those bonds. I highly recommend this to all young girls (20's) as a model of what they can do with the support of friends. The characters Madeline, Avery, and Nikki learned that together they could accomplish and survive anything.....and that's what girlfriends are for!

Sometimes a light and fun book is exactly what the doctor ordered. I actually have a full shelf of books set aside for the very fact that they have been recommended to me as just such books. Some of them are supposed to make me laugh. Others are just supposed to be romping good stories. And when I see a new Wendy Wax book out, I know that I am going to have another addition to my shelf, one that is guaranteed to deliver what it promises and to let me slip seamlessly into the world in the pages for a few hours. Three very different women, taken in by a Ponzi scheme and who have lost everything, unite to rehab the only asset they now own, third shares in a large but neglected mansion on Pass-a-Grill beach near Tampa. As they work to bring Bella Flora back to its former glory so that they can sell it and recoup at least some of their catastrophic losses, the women become friends. But the secrets they are hiding from each other could prove more devastating and unsurmountable than the amount of work they have to do on the house. Madeline, a stay at home mother and wife, discovers, almost by accident, that her husband has been laid off from his investment firm job for over six months. Not only had he invested his clients' money in Bernie Madoff-like Malcolm Dyer's Ponzi scheme but he'd sunk all of their own money as well as his mother's in the too good to be true portfolio. And once he has told her the truth, Steve retreats to the couch and a state of complete depressed catatonia. As if losing their life savings isn't bad enough, the mother-in-law who has long disliked her has had to move in with them thanks to declining health, her daughter calls and asks to come home after having gotten pregnant by a married Hollywood star and then fired from her film job as a result, and her college-aged son loses his scholarship because of bad grades. The sky could not fall any further in on her. Avery is the disgruntled sexy side-kick on a home renovation show with her now ex-husband. Despite being the driving force behind the show in the beginning, and the one with the architecture degree, she has allowed herself to be sidelined almost to the point of being a prop. And then she is let go. Still grieving the sudden loss of her father the year before, she is horrified to learn that her entire inheritance has been lost in Malcolm Dyer's investments. Nicole is a high profile matchmaker who deals in fulfilling the requirements of her wealthy clients. She is under no illusions about love, except perhaps the love she still has for her younger brother, the one she mothered during the years they lived in dire poverty as their mother worked around the clock just to survive. The problem is that Nicole's brother is the infamous Malcolm Dyer and he stole everything she had too. She's lost her business, her home, and all the trappings of success that she worked so hard for after vowing that she would never again live like she lived as a child. Each of the women travels down to Pass-a-Grill to look at her last remaining hope, the dilapidated mansion in which they each have shares, determined to sell the house and try to get back to some semblence of a normal life. But the house is worth much more rehabbed than it is "as is" and the women, each keeping the secret not only of the ruinous state of her own finances but of the even more dire situations in their backgrounds, commit to bringing Bella Flora back to its original glory with a little help from the contractor son of Avery's dad's old partner. And as they rebuild this glorious old house, they rebuild their own lives as well, becoming stronger and more confident people into the bargain. The main characters are delightful. Each of the women faces different challenges and has to learn to push past the defeat and create the sort of life she wants to lead. The secondary characters are just as well drawn and appealing as the main characters and help the main characters make the changes they need to make to grow and develop into the people they want to be. While there are men swarming all over Bella Flora, as it is transformed, it is refreshing that this did not turn into three (or four) love stories where a romantic relationship passes for change and growth. Instead, the women become stronger and more capable on their own, showing real change and growth and any relationship chemistry takes a backseat to their own senses of empowerment and dawning strength. A quick and engrossing read, this is the perfect book to accompany a beach chair and a frozen drink. The reader will almost wish to be in said beach chair, frozen drink in hand, next to these three fictional but remarkable women as they find and share their "one good thing" at the end of each long day.

Three women from very different backgrounds find themselves thrown into a common situation after they all become victims of a Ponzi scheme and lose everything, except for a single rundown beach house in south Florida of which they learn they are co-owners. Knowing this is their only shot to survive, they work together to renovate Bella Flora and get her ready for the market.I liked this book. It was a simple story- there weren’t any great mysteries to keep me on my toes- but the characters were relatable, with interspersed moments of emotion and levity. There is something for everyone to identify with in this book: painful childhoods, the trials of motherhood and marriage, loss, heartbreak, sexual tension that expresses itself in a combative nature, economics, strained family ties, and on and on.This book is written in an easy-to-read style. There’s no need to interpret the meaning of things, no symbolism to unravel. It simply gets to the heart of the matter. There was some occasional vulgarity, but it was far and few between. Mild sexuality. I’d give it a strictly PG-13 rating. The only real "negative" that I have (which wasn't significant enough to really be a negative) is that while I enjoyed the story, I found the ending slightly less than satisfying. I can’t get into “why” without involving spoilers, but suffice to say that the ending was “okay”, but not totally fulfilling for me.If you like stories of small towns, friendship, family and trials and tribulations (or if you like the works of Karen White), give this one a try. This was my first experience with author Wendy Wax, and I would be happy to give another of her works a shot in the future. It's a solid story, and a fine read!

Wow! Wendy Wax has earned herself a spot at the top of my awesome authors list! She is a fantabulous author with terrific writing skills. She really blew me away with her characters, her wit, and her plot line. It is wonderful book to get lost in to past a beautiful summer day with! Imagine this: life is great. Life is everything you wished it to be, with a few minor bumps along the way. Then you get a phone call. A devastating call that tells you you have absolutely no money left, save for a summer mansion in a remote little Florida town. I could feel myself so totally engrossed in this awesome read, that I felt like I was one of the 3 women who's lives were forever changed by this phone call. Maddie, Avery and Nikki all get a terrible phone call saying they have no money, save for this summer mansion I mentioned. What in the world will they do with it?! They meet for the first time at the viewing of this said mansion, and immediately, all are thinking that if they just sell it out right, they'll each make 1/3 of the sales and gain their monies back. But, what happens when, through the forged friendship, they decide to keep it and renovate it???As much as I would love to tell you the answer to that, I will not. I want you to grab a copy of this 5 star, humorous, yet fulfilling story of hope and friendship, and become friends with these ladies on your own. You'll lose yourself amongst the pages, and sadly, before you know it, it will be over with and you will be anxious for another fantastic summer beach read from Wendy Wax! Awesome job, Wendy!

The perfect summer read ,including restoring a gorgeous mansion on the sea to the hurricane coming to threaten all their hard work. It's the perfect meld of friendships developed and gone awry, kept me reading at the pool, it was 93 outside , until it was done. Good job Wendy Wax, and the kicker is there is a sequel that I'm going to pick up today to take with me on vacation!

Now that the hot, humid weather has arrived, my thoughts are turning to my summer reading list. As I began scanning my list, one author just grabbed my attention: Wendy Wax. Ms. Wax has been on my “new-to-me” author list for a while. I thought Ten Beach Road would be the perfect way to kick off my summer reading. In Ten Beach Road, the reader is introduced to three women at various stages of life. First is Madeline. She’s a wife and mother and is looking forward to having an empty nest. Dreams fill her mind about what the future holds for herself and Steve, her husband, when she finds herself blindsided by her husband’s secret. Next is Avery. She’s the co-host of the popular cable home improvement show Hammer and Nail. On the day she learns her contract will not be renewed, she is also told her inheritance from her father’s estate is gone. Now with no job or money, Avery is at a standstill for the first time in her life. Finally there’s Nicole “Nikki”. She’s a successful matchmaker with offices in LA and New York. Business is well as evident by her lifestyle. Growing up with parents who could not afford the luxuries of life, Nikki promised herself that she nor her brother would ever go without. And now her worst fear has come true. The three woman have are forced together when they learn their financial advisor stole their investments and made them co-owners of a run-down Florida beach house. Facing dire situations, the woman have no choice but to work together and trust each other in order to get back on their feet. At first glance, Ten Beach Road can be viewed as a quick, light read. As the story unfolds, themes of self-growth and perseverance begin to emerge. Each woman is tested as they work together to rebuild the house to its original beauty. So, if you’re heading out to the beach or the park or simply reading on your deck, Ten Beach Road is the perfect companion for a lazy afternoon spent reading.

What a great way to kick off summer. Ten Beach Road, an address housing the decrepit Bella Flora mansion, becomes a site of hope for three women bilked by a "mini-Madoff" investment banker. Maddie, Nikki and Avery all have their own reasons for wanting to extract money out of a successful renovation of the house. HGTV viewers will enjoy the attention to renovation details, but it's not so overpowering that you're bored. Really enjoyed the characters and story, definitely one for the beach bag!

A great read! Loved Ten Beach Road in so many ways!!! Wow, where do I begin. First and foremost the characters were divine! Loved the rags to riches and back to being homeless; struggles and challenges…can relate is so many ways, as have been involved with corporate America in whistleblowing and other SEC investment firm scams with companies I have worked for in Atlanta and Florida. Have been defrauded by Atlanta company, and lost everything at one point, so there is always a tough climb back! Story was so realistic and loved the humor, and the good times – dynamite strong women!

In addition, being a former interior designer have been involved with many showcase designer homes and all the work which it entails and the highs and low; the Mediterranean Revival and Art Deco periods – involved with properties in West Palm Beach from 1920s-1948 in restoring these in downtown historic area for luxury inn and cottages and marketing them, so enjoyed this part.

Loved the Palm Beach, FL parts since I live in the area, as well as spent many vacations in St Pete, Clearwater, Indian Rock Beach, Johns Pass, Treasure Island, Don Ce Sars, office in Tampa, and have cycled up and down Gulf Blvd…quaint area and lots of memories with some great beach cottages like Colonial Court Inn. Lots of good laughs with this read and looking forward to reading Ocean Beach (setting in South Beach), which I love!

The story is wonderful, however the person reading it sounds like a robot. Hope the narration is better on book 2
