About this audiobook

Anne Perry's new Christmas novel is an irresistible tale of love, betrayal, greed, murder, and selfless devotion. For the first time, Perry's annual yuletide offering is set in New York City-a sparkling young metropolis bursting with life, promise, and subtle menace. The year is 1904. Twenty-three-year-old Jemima Pitt, the daughter of Thomas Pitt, head of Britain's Special Branch, is crossing the Atlantic. She is traveling with an acquaintance, Delphinia Cardew, who is to marry the aristocratic Brent Albright in a high-society New York wedding-a grand affair that will join together two fabulously wealthy families, titans of the international financial world. But Jemima senses a mysterious shadow darkening the occasion. Missing from the festivities is Delphinia's mother, Maria, who is marked by disgrace. Nearly sixteen years ago, Maria abandoned young Delphinia and disappeared-and now the Albrights refuse to mention her name. But when Harley, the groom's charismatic brother, asks Jemima to help him search for Maria and forestall the scandal that would surely follow if the prodigal parent turned up at the wedding, she agrees to assist him. From Hell's Kitchen to Fifth Avenue, the Lower East Side to Central Park, Jemima trudges through strange, snowy streets, asking questions but getting few answers-and never suspecting that she is walking into mortal danger, from which not even a handsome young police officer named Patrick Flannery may be able to protect her. Once more, Anne Perry delivers a suspenseful, deeply moving novel that captures the essence of the holiday spirit.

I was very surprised to discover that this was the 12th Christmas novel by Anne Perry as she is a new author to me discovered when I first read the blurb in the “Early Reviewer” November 2014 listing from LibraryThing. I was very happy that I was selected to receive an Early Reviewers copy of this title from the monthly batch of offerings. I love Christmas so I can enjoy a novel with a Christmas theme at any time during the year but it always adds to the festivities to discover and read a “new title” by a “new author” (to me) during the actual holiday season. I could have devoured this treat in one sitting but some morsels should be savored and so I read it in two sittings. The story occurs in the year 1904 as two (2) young women cross the Atlantic on an ocean liner for the adventures of their lives. There is Jemima Pitt, age 23, escort to young Delphinia (known as Phinnie) Cardew, age 19, who is to become the bride of aristocratic Brent Albright in a grand, high-society wedding of the year which will further bind and commit two wealthy families to one another, each of the fathers considered titans in the international world of finance.Exquisite book cover art is not a must but without a doubt it can add an extra element of delight to the novel and certainly did for this title. The book design by Karin Batten gave a beautiful pictorial and romantic essence of being welcomed to New York in the midst of winter which led to a beautiful dedication by the author Anne Perry “to all the adventurers of the heart”.Another charm and highlight of this novel is the multitude of components that are layered into the story without any of the layers being compromised or appearing just for the sake of entry. There is mystery and intrigue, history and romance that is layered with an unsuspected death, an unlikely suspect, the return of a prodigal mother for a daughter’s wedding and is suspect to cause even more chaos and embarrassment to all then when she left so many years ago, and illustrates an example of what lengths a well-meaning relative may go to protect the family fortune. Add to the mixture a daughter learning her inner strength and courage based on her father’s career example in law enforcement, a young police officer's trust in his own judgment, and another daughter learning that her mother’s secret for leaving her father so many years ago was for a more meaningful reason than the daughter could have ever imagined. Picture the setting of a Victorian era New York just a few days before Christmas and the adventures of the heart begin…The special luxury for the reader is to understand as one finishes the last chapter that this was all accomplished in settings described so vividly that one’s imagination was rich with images to feel present in the rooms with the Albright family, or talking privately with family member Celia, or “walking the neighborhoods” of New York with Jemima and Patrick. I can’t give this novel higher praise than to share that I can’t wait to read another Christmas novel by Anne Perry.

I tried very hard to listen to this but kept losing interest and finally gave up. Other books by the same author were much more engaging.

This book is the first one I've read in her Christmas series. As others have said, it was short and sweet. Just enough information about how people behaved during that era --- that is why Jemima Pitt is chosen to chaperon a younger acquaintance Delphinia Cardew to New York City to be married. She discovers that things are not all as they appear, and ultimately finds herself accused of murder. She debates about notifying her father, Insp. Thomas Pitt back in England,to see if he can help her out in this stickyin situation, she decides to take matters into her own hands and find the real murderer. Love blossoms along the way, and we are left with wondering if she will ever return to England.

This is my first book by the author - well, novella - and it was light but not overly engaging. Young Jemima Pitt accompanies her friend from England to New York so she can be married. Jemima is the daughter of the head of Britain's Special Branch so when she finds herself accused of murder she decided to find the killer herself. She has the help of a kind NY city police officer and as Jemima investigates the murdered woman's life she finds that she was a good woman and that all is not what it might seem. This was a quick read and really quite predictable. Somewhat like a lemon sorbet between courses of a big meal. Nice but not much substance. It was a good break between heavier books.

Read Triple Jeopardy and was curious how Jemina met Patrick. This is a quick read -- a novella. Jemina accompanies a friend to NY for the friend's society wedding. Staying with the grooms family, Jemina gets talked into helping the groom's brother locate Jemina's mother who abandoned her when she was too. Jemina locates where she's living a discovers her dead body and is arrested by the local police officer, Patrick. He believes she's innocent and works with her to find the real murderer.

A nice light mystery. No profanity. No beatings. Plodding detective work. The solution was tipped very early but it was still an enjoyable read.

In the latest of Anne Perry's Christmas novellas, Jemima Pitt, twenty-three-year-old daughter of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt, travels to New York with her young friend, Delphinia Cardew. Delphinia is on her way to marry Brent Albright at Christmas time, and her father is too ill to make the trip. At just nineteen, she needs Jemima as a companion and chaperone.

Once in the opulent home of the Albright family, Jemima soon learns that Delphinia's absent mother did not die when Delphinia was young, but merely left, for reasons no one wants to discuss. When Brent's older brother Harley explains that Maria Cardew has led a scandalous life, and is new in New York, possibly planning to disrupt the wedding, Jemima is happy to agree to help find her, and persuade her to stay away.

This is, of course, a terrible mistake.

When Jemima finds Maria Cardew dead, she is soon in deep trouble and scrambling to use skills learned from observing her parents in order to learn the truth. Along the way, she meets a young man who may change her life, if it doesn't end very abruptly first.

This is, like all Perry's Christmas stories, a mystery tightly contained in both location and participants. Character development outside the most essential characters is light, but not absent. Jemima herself is smart, sensible, and clear-eyed. It's fun to see her explore the alien world of New York City, discovering the ways it does and doesn't resemble London.

If you've enjoyed the previous Christmas stories, you'll certainly enjoy this one. Recommended.

    I bought this book.

Anne Perry's 2014 annual Christmas story features Jemima Pitt, young daughter of popular characters, Thomas and Charlotte Pitt. She's hired by Edward Cardew to be a companion and chaperone to his daughter, Delphinia, who will be marrying Brent Albright, the son of Rothwell Albright, Mr. Cardew’s international business partner. Jemima is excited to be going on her first ocean crossing and looking forward to seeing New York.

Delphinia 's mother, who apparently deserted her daughter and husband years before, is also in New York and has a “reputation”. The Albright family fears she might decide to interrupt the wedding, so Jemima and the groom-to-be's brother set out to find her and persuade her to stay away. Why they think they can just wander around New York and run into her was a pretty weak plot line, in my opinion. But guess what? They spot her in Central Park and when they go to speak with her the following day, Jemima finds her in her bed, stabbed in the heart. By the time the police have been called, Jemima is the prime suspect for the murder.

While not as exciting as some of her past Christmas books it was a heartwarming and engaging new installment to the Christmas Stories series. It's an easy standalone read that will especially appeal to fans of the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series.

I haven't read a lot of books by Anne Perry and especially not her Pitt series, but I really enjoyed jumping right into this book which delivers a non-traditional Christmas story. I liked how the focus of the book was on the mystery and Jemima's quest to help her friend. The book has many different twists and turns to keep the reader and Jemima guessing what really happened to Delphinia's mother. Jemima is well developed in the book and the reader definitely connects with her as she faces dangers herself brought on by her quest. Overall A New York Christmas proved to be an exciting read that can be enjoyed during the holidays or all year round. I would definitely recommend this book, and I am looking forward to reading another one of Perry's books.Received a copy of A New York Christmas through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I needed a quick read between two rather chewy books-- sort of a palate cleanser, and thought this might fit the bill. It was pretty insipid. Not even a decent image of old New York City. Bleh. Disappointed.

Probably the worst of Perry's books. Completely flat characters, stifled dialogues and a silly, improbable plot. Reads like a beginner's Harlequin romance. Couldn't finish it.

I received this book in exchange for a review. I enjoyed the mystery, even though it was easy to figure out. The budding romance between Jamima and Patrick was pleasant as well. The book was an easy read and the characters were ok. I enjoyed the book even though it was easy and quick.

A novella featuring Jemima, Thomas and Charlotte Pitt's daughter, all grown up now and accompanying a slightly younger and shallow young woman to New York for the girl's wedding, during the Christmas holiday season. It was the first of Perry's Christmas stories I've read, and especially fun since I read it when I was flying to New York to spend Christmas with my daughter. As other reviewers have noted, the mystery is a tad weak, but, since this was not a full-length novel, a more intricate and well-executed plot couldn't be expected. Overall, it was a quick and pleasant read, and I enjoyed the touch of romance too.

This is the first Christmas book of Anne Perry's that I read and it wasn't to bad. I like the short read of the book. The setting and the young girls coming over from Europe was very nicely written. I liked how Jemima was enjoying everything she saw on the voyage and on her tour of New York City. I thought from the start that Harley was one not to trust.

At the turn of the last century, Jeminia Pitt escorts Delphinia Cardew across the Atlantic so that Delphinia can marry into NYC’s elite. Instead, she gets mixed up in a dark secret involving Delphans estranged mother and travels the streets of New York during this winter season. A quick Christmas mystery story, which was entertaining but I felt as though it was rushed to make it for holiday publication date. And although I have read it way past Christmas I still found it pleasant enough nevertheless.

While I am a long time fan of Anne Perry, this was my first reading of one of her Christmas novels, so I came to this book with no preconceptions. The shift of setting to New York, 1904, was terrific as was seeing Jemima Pitt all grown up and very like her indominable mother. As has been said by others, the mystery was a bit weak, but this was a novella, so one could not expect a more intricate and well executed plot. Overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quick and pleasant read.

I've fallen into the habit of reading an Anne Perry Xmas novella every holiday. I look forward to it but am usually a little let down. These are short reads and very entertaining but I wish they were full fledged novels. Her Xmas series always have the ability to be really really good novels but fall short almost as if some editor cuts parts out to meet the page count! A New York Christmas features a grown Jemima Pitt (daughter of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt of Perry's famed mystery series) and supporting characters that were very interesting. The mystery, however, was just okay. I'm hoping Perry brings the series to both sides of the pond at the turn of the 20th century adding New York with Jemima and spouse(?). As an aside -- I've been saving her William Monk series for years now to binge read when I was in the mood. A New York Christmas succeeded in putting me in the binge read Anne Perry mood...on number 4, but what do I do when I've caught up??

In the beginning the book had all the ingredients...interesting characters, mysterious mystery, period details. But it did not hold together, at all. A novella, particularly a mystery novella requires consistent pacing and a satisfying ending. All of a sudden, about 3/4 of the way through the book fell apart. The plot twists made little sense and honestly, the only reason I continued was to be able to rate it here on LibraryThing.

"A New York Christmas" is a Christmas gift story about a wealthy family in New York City in 1904.This tasty story has Jemima Pitt, daughter of Thomas Pitt, head of Britain's Special Branch, accompanying her acquaintance Delphinia Cardew across the Atlantic to New York. Phinnie is to be married to Brent Albright, an heir to his family's wealth. There is a question as to a person not invited to the wedding and when Jemima tries to learn more, she comes across the body of a woman who had been murdered. Jemima is accused of the crime. We see what a brave person Jemima is, in that, the daughter of a famous police investigator, she decides to find the killer and is assisted by a kindly New York Police Officer, Patrick Flannery. There is a feel of a Charles Dickens tale here as there are many family connections between the Albright's and the Cardew family. Jemima looks into the deceased woman's past and learns of the woman's kindness and her true relationship with the family. As in one of Dickens's stories, a poor woman had an honorable goal in mind and wealthy individuals misinterpreted it.I enjoyed the story and the look at New York City life in the 1904 time. It was also interesting to see the wealthy aristocracy of the Albrights and compared it to the Gillingham family of Downton Abbey.Jemima is a brave person who is gutsy and determined. I would enjoy seeing how she developed during her life in America.

This was an enjoyable read. It was a good book, but not a great one. It was short, but because I love New York and I love Christmas (& I enjoy mysteries & historical fiction) I enjoyed getting lost in Anne Perry’s novella for a day. This was the first time I read Perry ... I was engaged enough by this little book that I shall read more of her in the future.Additionally, I really like the cover image -- a scenic depiction of New York's Central Park on a snowy day in the early 1900s. The jacket illustration is credited to Aleta Rafton.

Anne Perry does an excellent job in presenting a Christmas mystery that is hopeful as well as darkly intriguing. Acting as a chaperone to an about-to-married acquaintance, Jemima Pitt ultimately uncovers some rather unsavory facts about her charge’s new family. Not wanting to distress her friend unduly, she nevertheless is driven to uncover the truth, no matter whom it hurts. Unfortunately, Jemima finds herself ensnared in a trap. With engaging characters in a complex plot, this novel is still a quick read and the perfect mystery for the Christmas season or anytime.

This is a quick read, with an engaging, if predictable story of two young women who travel from London to New York in 1904 for the marriage of the younger woman. The older is the daughter of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt from one of Perry's long running series' of mysteries. The mystery in this short story, a murder, is easily solved - but takes the characters far too long to figure out, leaving me wanting to shout at them. A reasonable diversion for an hour, but no new ground or thought provoking ideas to be found here.

Early Reviewer from LibraryThing. I wish I could say I liked this book. I've never read Anne Perry before. It was too short (I know, it was meant to be) and not really 'gritty' enough for my tastes. The bad guy was obvious, although there were some hidden plot points related to motivation. Just not my type of mystery. But I always appreciate a free book!

Anne Perry is an excellent story teller, short or novel length. This issue of her Christmas Books features Jemina, daughter of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. As would her adventurous mom and detective dad do when a murder crosses their path, she solves the crime. With help from a lovely Irish NYC policeman that could lead to the Pitt's having an American connection. But, that is another story.
