- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5In this sequel to Au Revoir Crazy European Chick, Perry's band was touring in Europe when he meets up with Gobi again, and is dragged along on her current run of assassinations and mayhem.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was a family listen-aloud in the van. I chose it because of the music connection and thought my boys (13 & 11) would like that. Description said ok for ages 12 and up, so I figured it split the difference. The protagonist is 19, though, and that should've been my clue. Given the F-bomb, among many other swear words and the frequent talk about losing/having lost virginity and Perry's 24 year old girlfriend, not my best mothering move. By then we were into it and there was no turning back, although quite a few awkward moments and some gratuitious going-for-laughs "bleeps" on my part. Turns out this is a sequel, (also not totally evident from the description) so we are dropped into the middle of Perry Stormier's tumultuous life. He is part of a band, Inchworm and they have just been granted a European tour, resulting in choosing to do a "gap year" before starting college. Perry has a spy in his past --- senior year of high school, Gobi was a Lithuanian foreign exchange student living with his family. In actuality, she is a hired assassin and she turns up again in Europe. Apparently a band tour makes you easy to track down. Luckily, Perry is not her target, but he quickly gets embroiled in her mission and has to do some hard thinking and face reality in an adult way that most gap years don't require. The action is fast-paced, rollicking, entertaining -- each chapter given an actual song title (hence the playlist -- guessing the paper copy has a definitive list at the end) so part of the fun was trying to place the song and make the connection (I knew maybe 5 of them, total -- pathetic!) Good humorous scenes are interspersed with high drama -- just wish the age standard was a little more accurate. This would be an R-rated movie in my estimation -- hopefully the lack of visuals kept it a little tamer in their listening experience.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This was a real disappointment after "Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick". It lacked the humour and fast action that made the first book such a winner.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A great addition to this accidental action hero/spy series. I love the relationship developments throughout this story and that the great snarky humor I loved in the first book is still present. I wish we could see these stories on the big screen... they are ripe for a visual telling. I recommend listening to the audiobook on a short roadtrip- the narrator has great tonal quality and adds to the snark in just the right way.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Perry has decided to take a year off after those grueling college application essays and give his band Inchworm a chance at the big time. As luck would have it, his new girlfriend Paula has finagled a European tour for him and the guys. When he runs into Gobi in Venice, all bets are off, as Perry is swept up in another one of her 'jobs'. The short chapters, titled with the promised playlist, keep the pace of this story moving along as it shifts quickly around Europe. This was another fun, fast read by Schreiber and I certainly wouldn't mind another YA title from him.
