Crider taught for years at our little college here. I realized recently that I'd never read one of his mysteries!

Like many mystery readers of my acquaintance, I don’t care for the romance genre. You could call me a snob and you wouldn’t be too far off the mark. For that reason, I would not have been seen in public reading A Romantic Way to Die, as it looks to all the world like a paperback romance. It is not. The story does center on a conference for romance writers, wannabees and hangers-on held in Blacklin County, Texas. As Sheriff Dan Rhodes discovers, there are lots of hidden agendas, petty jealousies, back-stabbing and worse in the romance-writing field. Then they all boil over into murder. We learn on the back cover that the second victim is Terry Don Coslin, a local boy with great pecs, who has made it big as a shirtless romance-cover model. Rhodes, a laid-back, non-stereotypical Texas sheriff, feels a sense of urgency to get Coslin’s murder solved before the tabloid and celebrity journalists make their way to Cleariew to upset the balance of the small town. When the sheriff almost winds up dead, he’s in even more of a hurry.Aside from the cover art, I really liked A Romantic Way to Die. Sheriff Rhodes is a very appealing hero, and the secondary characters were interesting and often quirky. The plot was believable enough – don’t expect hard-edged realism – and the writing was squeaky clean. Although this series is not at the top of my favorites’ list, I would definitely pick up another for a quick, light read when that’s what I’m in the mood for.First published in Mystery news, Feb/March 2003 issue.
