      I enjoy Michell’s ability to create such a rich background story. I gets to be too long because main character continues to try and manage all the characters events.

      This twelfth adventure begins immediately after the events of the eleventh. Elantra is still picking up the pieces after the battle. Kaylin Neya is recovered enough from her injuries to go back on duty with the Hawks. Her first case is to investigate the murder of three people in a normally quiet part of town. Bellusdeo, the only known female dragon and Kaylin's friend, decides to tag along. Kaylin is chosen for the investigation because she can see magic. When she nears the scene, she is drawn to the house across the street where she meets a young girl named Kattea and her guardian Gilbert who is apparently one of the shadow creatures that the city fought against. That only begins the strangeness.When they get to the crime scene, Kaylin can't even see the bodies unless she looks through the wings of the small dragon who has adopted her. That is only one of the problems that Kaylin has. Lord Nightshade is missing from his fief and his brother who returned very much changed from his time in the Green is both worried about him and angry with him. He is also a danger to all unless he can learn to control the powers that he brought back home with him. Luckily, Kaylin, Bellusdeo, both Nightshade's brother and a companion who came back with him are living in a house that is self-aware and who can control his out of control powers.Kaylin wants to add one more to their household. Moran, who is a sergeant in command of the Hawk's infirmary, is an Aerin who badly damaged her wings in the recent battle. She won't allow Kaylin to heal her and doesn't want to take advantage of Kaylin's hospitality. Moran is determined to live in the infirmary until she is healed. Kaylin does everything she can to make Moran change her mind.Between a sentient house, a shadow in human form, the Keeper losing control of his garden, mirrors spreading chaos, and spells cast for unknown reasons that are destroying the city, Kaylin has a very busy time of it. I tended to skim over much of the explanation of what Gilbert could do and the nature of reality and time that form the big problem in this book because I found it very confusing. But, still, the theme of loneliness woven into this book was compelling. Everyone was trying for a connection with others. Even Gilbert who isn't human in any sense of the world suffered from an intense loneliness. I felt most sorry for Kattea who found herself in a past that wasn't her past and ached to meet her parents despite the fact that they would not know her. Her strong connection with Gilbert was the key to him finding a way to do his job without wiping out all the lives in Elantra.This is a very entertaining series for fans of epic fantasy. Kaylin is a human character in a world that has immortals, dragons, Leontines, and Thalanni but, as the chosen one, she is the one that events seem to pivot around. Even though she doesn't know what being the chosen one means, she has to act and make choices using her best instincts.I can't wait to read the next adventure.

      It was very interesting to see Kaylin have to deal with, essentially, Kaylin - to see her in positions with Kattea that other people traditionally find themselves in with Kaylin herself. The frustration, even anger, the eventual grudging surrender, all so familiar. Sometimes wittingly, sometimes not. Is this a sign that our Kaylin is growing up? Naah :)

      I was completely certain I had already read this for the first two chapters even though all evidence suggested that I hadn't. Time warp??

      As always, I read it too fast and immediately want more. The plot is almost secondary to just being able to spend time with the people we've come to know.

      I liked this for the most part, but there were parts where I felt it dragged, especially when it came to description of what was going on. I didn't find it helpful in explaining, but actually a little more confusing. I truly appreciate the effort that went into it, but it may have been too much information. At least for me.

      A compelling labyrinth of events!Wow! Complex, occasionally confusing and yet marvellous. What is it about Private Kaylin Neya that makes her at once vulnerable, impulsive, rash, yet able to see to the heart of things despite her imperfections. Maybe it's her big heart that encompasses all, her need to love, her compulsion to heal and to extend herself to others and on behalf of others. She doesn't back down from what has to be done even when she wants too. She numbers dragons, Barranis and caste lords amongst her acquaintances. Children of all races are her especial joy.Elantra is recovering from a destructive battle between light and dark. A routine murder investigation has Kaylin and her friends being confronted by an even bigger anomaly. Elantra is in peril, parts are disappearing and time is involved. A mysterious being Gilbert appears from a future Ravellon with a child, Kattea, looking for healing that only the Chosen, Kaylin, can help with. Kaylin is confronted by the idea that shadows have free will and might be able to function as individuals. A disturbing thought! Added to that, Nightshade is missing in Ravellon where only the shadows dwell, and it appears that Gilbert has met him. Healing a broken time rift and rescuing Nightshade and, as it unfolds, Bellusdeo and other of her friends in the course of the investigation is an imperative. Kaylin finds herself accompanied by new and old companions in this race for Elantra's survival. The importance of the elements: water, fire, air and earth, and Everton's garden have never been so confronting, in the quest to find the broken seal of time. As Gilbert explains, "Time is the allowable axis around which change revolves." This has far reaching consequences.The thing about Kaylin is her sheer determination in spite of the odds. What keeps her going is her love and compassion, her desire to right the world--the unspoken promise to her inner child who had been through so much.There are two who draw her above others, Nightshade and Severn. There is an emotional loss with Severn that I hope heals. He is in many ways her rock. Nightshade is a part of her too. I know he has marked her but she has marked him. In fact all who are drawn into Kaylin's sphere are in someway marked by her and value her even as she disrupts, dismays and angers them be they Hawk Lord, Dragon Emperor or the Arkon.Throughout this novel Kaylin and we struggle with the idea of time. Honestly I was thoroughly wrung out with the physics and philosophy of the notion of time. I realized that as I battled to grasp the meaning, I battled it along with Kaylin--what a hook! Sagara places the reader so squarely inside Kaylin's head that you identify with her strongly. When her head throbbed, mine did too. When she was uncertain, so was I. It seems that the influence of Kattea on Gilbert might be love in its many and varied forms--and that is a huge part of the Elantra novels and Kaylin's raison d'être. As Annarion tells Kaylin, she loves almost unconditionally--her strength and her weakness, her very humanness.I love the Elantra novels. Why because I love Kaylin and her friends and the challenges they all face. I am always eager to see how they interact, what the the hunt might be, the new quest, and the revelations that come, all underlined by a wry humour.A NetGalley ARC

      A continuation of the long-running Chronicles of Elantra. A fairly routine murder investigation quickly turns odd, with the discovery of an orphaned girl and her unusual protector. Soon the city itself is at risk, and maybe the whole of this plane of existance. A bit talky, with lots of philosophical discussion about the nature of time and reality and life, which dampens the urgency somewhat.Not the most compelling entry in the series, and definitely not a good place to start. Either this series is getting tired or I am.
