About this audiobook

Shelley Shepard Gray’s first book in her Charmed Amish Life series is set in the quaint Amish village of Charm, Ohio, and tells the stories of the Kinsinger siblings who are each struggling to find both forgiveness and love in the face of tragedy.

Three months ago, everything changed for Darla Kurtz and her family. Darla’s father was responsible for a terrible fire at Charm’s lumber mill which killed five Amish men. And though he, too, lost his life, the town of Charm hasn’t looked at her family the same since. Even Lukas Kinsinger—with whom Darla used to have a close friendship.

Now her brother’s anger at the town is spilling over onto Darla, and she has the bruises to prove it. The accident already cost five lives, but if something doesn’t change soon, Darla fears it will cost her—and her family—even more.

Lukas Kinsinger wants to mourn the loss of his father, but he can hardly find the time to breathe. Suddenly the head of his father’s lumber mill and responsible for taking care of his three siblings, he’s feeling the pressure. He has also never felt more alone—especially with the new tension between he and Darla. But when he learns of her troubles at home, Lukas knows he can’t simply stand by and watch. Someone has to help her before another tragedy occurs.

As Lukas and Darla attempt to repair their families, they discover something deeper than friendship growing between them. But will Lukas and Darla’s love be accepted after so much loss? Or will the pain of the past overcome any chance of future happiness?

This book is the first in the beginnings of a new series by Shelley Shepard Gray, Charmed Amish Life, set in Charm, Ohio. As the book opens we find it torn apart by grief, five men have been killed in a blast fire at the Kinsinger Lumber Plant, and it seems everyone blames someone else, although it has been ruled an accident.Darla and Aaron Kurtz lost their father to this accident; somehow parts of this community want to place the blame on him. The ramifications of this and grief seem to have affected Aaron in a very adverse way. This town and these families are forgetting one of the basis of their religion and that is forgiveness, whether it is true or not. Each seems to take their anger or grief out in different ways, some have turned to violence, totally out of the way they believe. You will become a page-turner on this one and hoping for the best for all concerned, and hoping life long friendships won’t be broken. It seems that while most of the community think that Henry Kurtz was the cause, and yes it was an accident, others feel it was the Kinsinger family, whatever caused this tragedy the survivors and broken and trying to find their way back to living and their faith.Come journey with this book, and I’m looking forward to the next in this series, and hopefully more answers will be forthcoming!I received this book through Litfuse Publicity Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

Title: A Son’s VowAuthor: Shelley Shepherd GrayPages: 288Year: 2016Publisher: Avon InspireSeries: Charmed Amish Life #1My rating is 5 stars.Lukas is the oldest of the Kinsinger siblings whose life, along with other families, has irrevocably changed due to a fire at the family’s mill. Lukas lost his father and now he is the head of the mill and the family. As a result of the tragedy another resident of Charm has lost her father; however, some of the town folks blame Darla Kurtz’s father for the fire.Darla and Lukas have been close friends since they were little children and now both have to assume responsibility while trying to deal with their own grief. Darla works at the local post office to help care for her younger siblings; however, her brother Aaron, who works at the mill, has been different. Aaron is now an angry young man who, though pledged to marry Hope, is taking his anger out on Darla. For me, I enjoy Shelley’s tales as they are written so lifelike, meaning characters have real problems, feelings, etc. In book one of the series, we meet the two families and see the pain they are in and if Lukas can gain enough courage to pursue Darla even though she is not looked on favorably by others in Charm and most certainly not by Aaron!I was glad I started with book one in the series as the other novels that follow flow from the previous book. While it could be read without reading the sequels, I couldn’t put this book down as it grabbed my heart and I wanted to see how the families lived after the town’s tragedy. I hope you enjoy each of the books in the series: A Son’s Vow, A Daughter’s Dream, A Sister’s Wish and An Amish Family Christmas.

A freak fire at the town’s lumber yard left five men dead. Though fingers were pointed at Darla’s father as the culprit who started the fire, Lukas, the son of the owner, publicly declared him innocent. Both fathers died in the blaze which was determined to have had multiple factors that combined to make the tragedy. But Darla’s brother blamed the conditions of the yard, and the owners. Darla and Lukas have had a long-standing friendship that has been strained due to the accusations that followed the fire. Now, hard feelings exist in both families, but Darla and Lukas are still drawn to each other. This book explores several themes, including anger, sadness, culpability, remorse, and forgiveness. The tale is well written and is peopled with likable and believable characters.

The story is set in Charm ,Ohio where i a tight knit group of people live and look out for each other. As the story begins, the town is faced with a tragedy that happened at the local lumber mill. Many families have lost loved ones and each are dealing with their grief in different ways. The rumors in the town is that Darla's father may have caused the accident. Her family tries to understand what has happened, but it is hard when they have lost their dad in the accident also. The book is an emotional journey for this quaint town. While most of the town has moved on, some have kept their anger and bitterness deep in their heart. I loved the raw emotions the characters went through. What would you do if you had lost a family member in an accident and believed someone was at fault? The accident changes Aaron, Darlas' brother into an angry, and somewhat violent young man. The author has done a brilliant job of showing what happens when you let bitterness enter your heart. Is Aaron angry because he couldn't save his dad that day? Will he be able to keep his vow to his dad? Can Darla hold her head up everyday as some of the townspeople lash out at her? With every page I turned, I felt more compassion for these characters as they started to reach their breaking point. Why is it so hard for us to forgive ? I loved Darla and her meekness towards her brother and others who brought her to tears many times. Her gentle spirit was inspiring and a great lesson for others . Do we turn the other cheek when we are hurt by someone? This is another outstanding book written by an author who I have come to respect by her sweet spirit that flows so smoothly across the pages . Her beautiful story touches the depth of hurt and anger and gracefully walks the characters to a loving and forgiving God. Along the way you will meet several other key characters that reach out to help those who are suffering and show the real meaning of friendship and unconditional love. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves to read a story that grabs you from the beginning and leaves you with a feeling of peace and hope. Be sure to watch for the next in this series called, A DAUGHTER'S DREAM from THE CHARMED AMISH LIFE series. I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
