    Anton Chekhov

    Anton Chekhov was born in 1860 in Southern Russia and moved to Moscow to study medicine. Whilst at university he sold short stories and sketches to magazines to raise money to support his family. His success and acclaim grew as both a writer of fiction and of plays whilst he continued to practice medicine. Ill health forced him to move from his country estate near Moscow to Yalta where he wrote some of his most famous work, and it was there that he married actress Olga Knipper. He died from tuberculosis in 1904.

      Wonderful reading of Chekhov's short stories. I was equally amused and moved by Mr Fry's interpretation, I highly recommend this book.

      it is a great to listen to for a quick and short entertaining read. the narrator's voice is engaging and let you be, virtually, inside the events of the srory.

      short little light stories. was nice. Fry makes all the difference i think. he should read more audiobooks.

      Only English/Softly spoken accent I’ve found on this site so far. Content very depressing and not what I was looking for. First few stories were narrated too fast in pace. I would’ve liked some pauses in order to reflect on what was said and to add atmosphere.

      Altogether disappointed and now at a loss to as what to listen to next.

      I really wish this site weren’t so focused on celebrity narrators. I’m sure there are so many narrators to choose from that aren’t famous that are amazing. It’s a shame that this site hasn’t more diversity. I was really rooting for a great read.

      It is Russian. It is Chekhov. Dark, clever, full of longing and ennui and resentment in equal measure, laugh out loud funny even to people who aren't following the story or appreciative of the works. Sad. Filled with poverty. Careful mockery of the government that holds true today no matter where or when you are.

      If you are someone who doesn't care for Russian literature because it's long and gloomy and not in the reach of people not of a certain place, I beg you, try this. The humor and relationships between people and their circumstances are so relatable, you'll wonder why you'd never read these stories.

      Stephen Fry is, as always, wonderful, his lilting tones perfectly conveying the tones from sardonic to nonplussed to fantastical.

      As this is a collection of short stories, it's quite easy to digest and stop and start easily.

      Great to hear Stephen Fry reading, but the next chapter started with no pause from the previous, spoiling the end of each story.

      Fry is always a complete joy to have as a narrator, the stories are about life, some more interesting than others as you could expect from some short peaks into well... life. There is among them a story titled "Misery" about a carriage driver which in it's short delivery has one of the most realistic depictions of grief I have heard or seen.

      if every audio book was read by Stephen Fry I would be happy. He reads with just enough emphasis to bring the stories to life without overdoing it.

      As someone who has never read or listened to anything by Chekhov before, this was a wonderful introduction. Stephen Fry is a wonderful narrator, and the stories go between darkly funny and genuinely heartbreaking.

      Great short stories. Great narration. BUT, terrible editing. There was no space at the end of each story. None. Recording just slammed into next story giving ending no space to breath. Very annoying!

      These are slice of life stories, they aren’t complete tales, they don’t always have obvious points, beginnings or endings. Many times it feels like you’ve just read a chapter from another book. They’re not happy stories for the most part and aren’t going to leave a smile on your face. But they’re really, really good. Simple, direct, and straight to the heart of the characters, the people of Russia of 100 years ago.

      Now I need to find more.
