About this audiobook
Combining the lyrical observation of F. Scott Fitzgerald with the laser-bright social satire of Evelyn Waugh, Jay McInerney gives us a novel that is stunningly accomplished and profoundly affecting.
As he maps the fault lines spreading through the once-impenetrable marriage of Russell and Corrine Calloway and chronicles Russell's wildly ambitious scheme to seize control of the publishing house at which he works, Jay McInerney creates an elegy for New York in the 1980s. From the literary chimeras and corporate raiders to those dispossessed by the pandemonium of money and power, Brightness Falls captures a rash era at its moment of reckoning and gives reality back to a time that now seems decidedly unreal.
Jay McInerney

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5There was something wonderfully escapist and other-worldly about reading this - set in New York (a place I've never been) amongst people who just love socialising (I hate socialising). Fascinating and informative and safe, reading about all that mingling without actually having to mingle myself. Perfect. It manages to make management buyouts sexy, and it also contributed vast swathes of new words to my vocabulary - at one point in the early stages I was having to consult the online dictionary around once a page. But the writing is razor sharp, and when a long and unfamiliar word is used, it's always perfect for the job. How come I have never encountered this author before? Discovering that this is just the first in a trilogy about these characters came as very welcome news indeed.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I struggled a bit through this one. Wish I could say I enjoyed it more. However, I still couldn't put it down.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A fairly traditional narrative. Marriage, business, writing, a few drugs. Timely reading now in that it climaxes with the Crash of 1987.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I found this book at a book sale and remembered Bright Lights Big City which was a good move with Micheal j. Fox. This story revolves around New York publishing and Wall Street in 1987 and covers about a year before and after the stock market crash of 1987. The writing is very good but topic which deals with the privileged set and ultimately leads to a so what when you are done. However, it was a page turner for me and sort of a guilty pleasure. The author has talent but subject matter seems better suited to a 2 hour movie. If you are looking for a quick somewhat trash novel which good narratives, then try this. I felt an obligation to review it because I read it but doubt if I would ever pick up another book by the author.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I loved The Good Life so much, that when I found out it was the second part of a trilogy, I had to read the rest. Well, Brightness Falls was a good story, but I don't think it would have inspired me to read the rest of the trilogy. I have high hopes for the final installment, Bright, Precious Days, which I'm reading now.
