    Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York City. Both his grandfathers were Revolutionary War heroes but his father, a merchant, died bankrupt in 1833. Melville left school and worked at various jobs before shipping on the whaler Achshnet in 1841. The next year he deserted, travelled the South Seas and joined the US Navy. After three years he retired, settled in Massachusetts and started to write. His first two novels, Typee (1846) and Omoo (1847), were fictionalized accounts of his travels: they remained his most popular works during his lifetime. In 1847 Melville married and wrote a series of novels he considered potboilers for money. With Moby-Dick (1851) he changed course, partly under the influence of Nathaniel Hawthorne; but the novel's extravagant intensity lost him readers. Pierre (1852) fared no better, and after publishing one more novel Melville took a job as a customs inspector in the New York City harbour and turned to writing poetry. He died there in 1891; an unfinished novel, Billy Budd, Sailor, was published in 1924.

      Very good this audiobook where the author describes Written with wonderfully redemptive humor, Moby-Dick is a profound and timeless inquiry into character, faith, and the nature of perception, this narrator has an excellent voice and I recommend it 100% it is a very good work , good work of the narrator of the book makes one keep listening to the audible without no interference, thanks .

      this book contain that Moby Dick famously begins with the narratorial invocation “Call me Ishmael.” The narrator, like his biblical counterpart, is an outcast. Ishmael, who turns to the sea for meaning, relays to the audience the final voyage of the Pequod, a whaling vessel. Amid a story of tribulation, beauty, and madness, the reader is introduced to a number of characters, many of whom have names with religious resonance. The ship’s captain is Ahab, who Ishmael and his friend Queequeg soon learn is losing his mind. Starbuck, Ahab’s first-mate, recognizes this problem too, and is the only one throughout the novel to voice his disapproval of Ahab’s increasingly obsessive behavior. This nature of Ahab’s obsession is first revealed to Ishmael and Queequeg after the Pequod’s owners, Peleg and Bildad, explain to them that Ahab is still recovering from an encounter with a large whale that resulted in the loss of his leg. That whale’s name is Moby Dick.

      The author talks a painful lot about whales. Chapter upon endless chapter of encyclopedic whale knowledge is cumbersome. Some very good philosophical passages are there, which I liked.

      The reading is in a cartoonish, youthful tone. That tone feels good for Ishmael at first, but it does injustice to the more serious characters, situations and ponderings.

      It was tiring to go through the whole thing, but I can't say it was a bad book.

      Moby-Dick is a very interesting audio book novel. When i read this audio book i can't stop myself to recommend my friends to read this book to enjoy and learn something very interesting topic. its really adventure, more than an encyclopedia of whaling lore and legend. Thanks to Herman Melville.

      his book is so long, and I read it so fast. 5 Stars, Baby! My only critique is that it is a bit repetitive at times, but I forgive because it seemed like an intentional concession to the length of the book and recognition that folks might be putting it down for chunks of time. Brief chunks, I'd have to believe because this was soooo engrossing.
      I know this style, or something like it, has been implemented before - use the personal stories of a few representative characters to exemplify the themes, then explore the themes. Wash and repeat. But I personally haven't read many books in this style. I usually want either facts or stories; I am continually fighting against the human impulse to process the world through narrative rather than boring facts. Futile, I know.
      Ms. Wilkerson interviewed 1200 people about their migrations to the North and West, as well as the folks left behind. She settled on 3 very different migrants to draw us into the book, one moving from Mississippi to Chicago, one from Florida to NY, and one from Louisiana to Los Angeles. The detail of their lives is utterly compelling, filled with detail, and yet I never felt like she was embellishing. Everything she said about their lives could have been confirmed with the people themselves or the people who knew them or the historical record. You are rooting for these tenacious characters, even though they were all dead by the time the book was published.
      The explication of the written and unwritten laws, threats, and other injustices of the US from the World Wars through the 1960s are incredibly detailed, giving full expression to the horrors that forced the migration of millions of Black folks in the 20th century. And the comparisons between the lives of the copious White immigrants and those of the Black citizens in the Northern cities is excellent fodder for any conversation well-meaning White people might have with their less-informed associates.
      Mostly, it's beautifully written, exhaustively researched, and astonishingly comprehensive. This book is all I wanted to do while I was reading it and I miss it a bit, now it's done. (less) "

      I first read it as a teen, however, it was several years later in my 20's that I read it again, arrogantly thinking I knew the book. Second time it was captivating! The 19th century language slows you down and gives you time to think about every line, I felt immersed in a way few modern day books can do. I'm in my 50's now and still love this book, I'd thoroughly recommend it.
