About this audiobook

Full of twists and turns, Everything You Want Me to Be reconstructs a year in the life of a dangerously mesmerizing young woman, during which a small town’s darkest secrets come to the forefront...and she inches closer and closer to her death.

High school senior Hattie Hoffman has spent her whole life playing many parts: the good student, the good daughter, the good citizen. When she’s found brutally stabbed to death on the opening night of her high school play, the tragedy rips through the fabric of her small town community. Local sheriff Del Goodman, a family friend of the Hoffmans, vows to find her killer, but trying to solve her murder yields more questions than answers. It seems that Hattie’s acting talents ran far beyond the stage. Told from three points of view—Del, Hattie, and the new English teacher whose marriage is crumbling—Everything You Want Me to Be weaves the story of Hattie’s last school year and the events that drew her ever closer to her death.

Evocative and razor-sharp, Everything You Want Me to Be challenges you to test the lines between innocence and culpability, identity and deception. Does love lead to self-discovery—or destruction?

My sympathies to the author, whose talents are obscured by an unbearably bad male narrator. My genuine interest in how the mystery resolves couldn't withstand the horrendously off-base accents and the feeble attempts to voice female characters, and I stopped well before the end. Audiobook producers, what were you thinking?

The book was okay, a decent crime drama. The narrators were horrible. I can't say it enough. Maybe I would have enjoyed the book if it weren't for the voices. It was so irritating it would actually put me in a bad mood.. I can't recommend this book whatsoever because of how much the narrators sucked. Especially Peter. Wow.

Terrrrrrible narrators. Plot had me thinking something completely different (not in a good way). Pretty bored throughout.

Not a bad book - better than average. It’s really not something that will stick with me a year from now, but it was definitely entertaining and enjoyable.

It was a good book, nothing too thrilling but still has interesting characters. The narrators were NOT good though, and they constantly mispronounced words that took away from the overall experience.

Absolutely terrific! Let the story flow! You guess at what will happen, then you second guess, third guess, and fourth guess.

I would have given 4 stars, but narrators were the worst I've ever heard. (Though it could have also been the director). First, the male keeps mispronouncing the name "Nguyen" throughout. (Pronounced like "win" by the way) and all narrators slipped in and out of male/female voices and they'd give them dialects they clearly weren't too comfortable with and the result was a mess. The book was ok, if a little predictable. PS: sorry, narrators, if you read this. I'm sure you shine in other works..?

Mejia weaves a great story. The storyline unfolds well and has plenty of surprises. The characters and storyline have more depth than most novels, which gives the surprises plausibility. The word choices are colorful. The dialog is believable and the banter is at times entertaining. The characters are likable enough and consistent even as the plot turns. Even if this is not your genre, you will probably appreciate this well-crafted book.

Very good. The compartmentalization style worked really well in this book. A tangled web of love and lust in which older man (fly) gets ensnared in young lady's (spider) web but she pays the price.
