      I know that Maier has a large following but I am giving up on this book. The plot is interesting and I like the archeological details but I am having problems with the writing style and the characters .

      New genre of book for me. Archeology never seemed so exciting. Will read more by this author ( as well as the next in this series) . Brilliant. Loved the narration. Lovely clear and well paced. This experience was a very pleasing package. Thank you <><

      Review of "A Skeleton In God's Closet" I just finished reading a book by Paul Maier called "A Skeleton In God's Closet" and found it was well worth reading on many levels. It is based on the 'discovery' of Jesus bones along with other artifacts that 'prove' its authenticity. It is very thorough in its academic approach to the archeological aspects of the story - perhaps too much so, in some cases. I found myself skimming through some of the more dry scientific stuff to get back to the story. The story itself, however, is well written. I especially appreciated the skill in which the author described the scenery and even the emotional turmoil of the main character, Dr. Jon Weber. However, i did find some of the romantic scenes a bit 'cheesy', if I may say. That part of the story just didn't read as natural. Over all, however, I enjoyed the book - the intrigue, the subterfuge and the disturbing question itself - what if Christianity is a grand hoax? I caught myself feeling disheartened and disillusioned along with the 'world' as the story progressed - the mark of good story telling, I think! I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in investigative stories, archeology, and of course, Christian fiction

      A book I bought for $4 with only a gut feeling from Half Price book stores. What I received was a transportation into what a world looks like without a living Savior. Please read Maier, he is a genius and magnificent storyteller.

      I remember really wanting to read this when I first read a review about it. I bought a used copy and then It sat on my shelf for a long time. I recently obtained an audio (abridged) copy, so figured that was the way to go in order to get to it more quickly. It's a decent-sized book, but on audio it's only 3 CD's, so it's apparently been abridged quite a lot, and that was obvious when reading, with all the really abrupt transitions and such. I've not read Paul Maier before, but know that he's a Christian writer. This is a work of fiction, based on the premise that as the result of findings in an archealogical dig, the validity of Jesus Christ's resurrection is questioned. Knowing the history of the author, the reader can fairly easily guess how the book is going to resolve itself, or at least what the outcome will be. It was a thought-provoking read, although I didn't feel the writing was all that stellar. It read a little more like a non-fiction book than a good thriller, which I think is what Maier was aiming for. There was a romantic storyline on the side, which really didn't add anything to the story and was unnecessary. I'm not sure the abridgement did this book justice, but on the other hand, I'm not sure it was written well enough to make me want to read the unabridged version either. Overall, interesting storyline, but the writing was lukewarm.

      This book is very well written, and so cleverly wrought that one might even begin to doubt their religion, yet ultimately Christianity will be vindicated. Fascinating and smart.
