About this audiobook

The son of a duke and an infamous mother, Alistair Mabry, Marquess of Rexton, fought his way to respectability. Now, the most eligible bachelor in London, marriage-shy Rexton will take only a wife with an impeccable reputation, good breeding, and a penchant for staying out of the gossip sheets. But when he strikes a deal to be seen “courting” a sweet young debutante whose notorious older sister has blemished her chances for marriage, Rexton is unexpectedly drawn to the highly inappropriate, calamitous Tillie, Lady Landsdowne herself.

After a scandalous incident that sent shockwaves throughout society and disgraced her, Tillie refuses to cower in the face of the ton. Instead, she will hold her head high as she serves as chaperone for her younger sister, but Tillie is convinced Rexton’s courtship is shrouded with secrets—ones she vows to uncover. However, doing so requires getting dangerously close to the devilishly handsome and forbidden marquess…

Lorraine Heath

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She’s been writing about them ever since. Her novels have been recognized with numerous industry awards and have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists.

Not one of Heath's better books.

Alastair "Rex" Mabry, Marquess of Rexton, insists on marrying a woman without reproach but finds himself unwillingly attracted to Mathilda "Tillie" Paget, a scandalous divorcée. Much of the first half is dedicated to both the hero and heroine's internal musings on why their attraction is problematic and the disastrous consequences if they give in to it. This leads slows the pacing and results in unnecessary and irritating repetition.

Thankfully, the pacing in the second half picks up once the "big secret" concerning Rex's agreement with Tillie's uncle emerges, and the romance finally gets going. The relationship between Rex and Tillie is sweet and the hero-in-pursuit plot is entertaining overall.

The final installment in the series focuses on Tillie's sister and Rex's brother, who are so very different. It will be interesting to see how they fare with each other.

Drama drama drama and the kind I hate. The kind where she seems to know what's best for the man and it means sacrifices no one is asking her to make...ugh

Lovely story. My second historical romance in a couple of weeks that had divorce in it. I did enjoy this book a lot

I liked the book well enough but it would have been better with a different narrator. Sorry but he just didn’t do it for me. The characters seemed sappy.

I hadn't been enjoying this series as much as the Scoundrels generation before them, but I really enjoyed this book. I believed the evolution of their conflicting feelings and their developing affections. I liked their backstories and motivations. A good HEA. It was just nice. I would consider rereading it at some point. A
