A good intro into the series, keeps you invested . I did enjoy the male narrator better than the female. Overall enjoyable.

Audio-book: Narrator - Maxine Mitchell and Jakobi Diem

I really enjoyed the male narrator as he did an excellent job of both male/female voices when required. And his voice for Grip was smooth as butter. Made me love the character even more. While I didn’t hate the female narrator’s portrayal of the characters, I did have a hard time adjusting to her inflections. She tended to have a little monotone at the end of each sentence that annoyed me just a bit. I’m hoping as I go into the next book it will not be as obvious to me and that my ear will acclimate to it quickly.

This sets up how Marlon/Grip and Bristol meet as well as what is driving them both in their lives. With an intense chemistry that Grip tries to deny out of respect for his best friend, he is unable to not be drawn to Bristol and the easy way in which they are together. Everything between them is effortless. For such a short beginning, this really covers a lot of emotional background for both of these characters. Unfortunately, the ending sets us up for the “rest of the story” and it appears it will be centered around a trope that I absolutely hate. Had I known that going in I may have not attempted this story, but I am so very curious how this couple that were just right for each can manage to come through these obstacles with a HEA. I suspect it’s going to be messy.

Oh, my, wow! I can't believe I waited for so long before reading a Kennedy Ryan book.
This was by far one of the most honest books I've read in a long long time.
And for a novella, it packs an amazing emotional punch.
There's so much to unpack here. I liked both characters a lot, their banter, their honest and meaningful conversations about race, past experiences as a POC, what it was like to be the forgotten child, their connection and chemistry.
The ending was explosive and I can't wait to read the next book.

Narration: I felt the narrators sounded a bit pretentious. The characters sounded differrently in my own head. But it was a nice experience, none the less.

TWs: cheating, absent parents, manhandling, emotional abuse, mentions of parents facilitating drug addiction in a teenager

Here we get to see how Bristol and Marlon(Grip) meet and what goes down
I can't wait to see what happens next
    I love both characters
Marlon( Grip) is a player, he is not even thinking about settling down soon, until he meets his best friend sister.
Bristol is a strong minded woman that doesn't take any shit from anybody (love her)
They have an instant connection but they try to not to act on it, because of her brother/ his best friend until they can't stay away from each other
    Then stuff happens ?

This was a good prequel. Just long enough to get you drawn in to the characters and make you want to get the to next book to find out what happens next

I have written before about how romance novellas don't work for me because there is not time to build requisite tension. Not a problem here! I think that is mainly because this is a lead in to a full length book. There is no resolution here, Ryan uses this space to help us get to know these two wonderful characters. I am 100% in love with them and loved spending time with them. Ryan takes on issues of race, class, parenting, family dynamics and more and does it all with such a deft hand. I listened to this in one shot on a flight from the West Coast, and It think it really works as a one sitting read.
