About this audiobook
JOSEF is a Jewish boy living in 1930s Nazi Germany. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world . . .
ISABEL is a Cuban girl in 1994. With riots and unrest plaguing her country, she and her family set out on a raft, hoping to find safety in America . . .
MAHMOUD is a Syrian boy in 2015. With his homeland torn apart by violence and destruction, he and his family begin a long trek toward Europe . . .
All three kids go on harrowing journeys in search of refuge. All will face unimaginable dangers — from drownings to bombings to betrayals. But there is always the hope of tomorrow. And although Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud are separated by continents and decades, shocking connections will tie their stories together in the end.
Alan Gratz (Prisoner B-3087, Projekt 1065) delivers an action-packed novel that tackles topics both timely and timeless: courage, survival, and the quest for home.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a powerful book
that brings the stories of three sets of refugees together in a realistic yet gripping manner. If it wasn’t based on things that really happened it would be easier to shrug off the desperate neediness of these displaced persons. I hope it will move others to do what they can to help them.
There is nothin harder than the softness of indifference.2 people found this helpful

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is a poignant story of the struggle to survive. It showed me life from a refugee's perspective--what families might go through to push them out of their homes and the many dangers they face on their journeys to build new lives. Mr. Gratz artistically weaves together historical details with a story that draws you in and makes you cheer the characters in towards their destinations.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a touching and eye opening story of individuals from three different worlds with a common determination to survive no matter the devastation they faced in their quest. I am a more compassionate person after reading & learning about the political plight facing refugees around the world. This is an important story!

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Refugee tells a true story of three children and their families each escaping their own oppressive governments. Escaping their governments is only the beginning of the hardships they endure while trying to make it to safety and a new and better way of life. Overall a very good book.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I never thought a book could make me cry, nervous, scared. But this book Refugee has been one of my favorite books. It made me imagine how difficult life must have been nowadays we can’t even imagine walking 12 hours non stop or having a gun pointed to our head. I love Alan Gratz books some character even the main characters don’t make it but they die bravely and it tells you in life people are going to die but you must make it count. I love how in the end of some of his books the characters meet in another time period which always brings me tears. Thank you.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely amazing read. Mr. Gratz wrote an engaging book that opened my eyes to life as a refugee. This book helped me gain more empathy for those that are struggling with a battle I know nothing about. I have already recommended this book for others to read and I recommend you read it too!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is an excellent book for students and adults alike to read. As an adult I was a little underwhelmed with the beginning of the book, but as I read, I realized that this book is a powerful way to clearly help people understand conflicts and refugee situations through the eyes of a young teen. I think this book is probably a little much for someone 11 and younger to take in, but it will help bring these stories in our history, and present, to students in middle school and high school in a way they can relate and understand. I learned some important things along the way too. Highly recommend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5That was a great book I'll be reading more of your books.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The book does a great job of humanizing the difficult subject of refugees. It is clearly one sided in a heated political subject.
