For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn't just a game—it's a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty-hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she's going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game's creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year's tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika's whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she's only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

“It is hard to describe loss to someone who has never experienced it, impossible to explain all the ways it changes you. But for those who have, not a single word is needed.”

Holy mackerel! This book hit me hard, I didn’t see a thing coming and I love, really love when a story surprises me. It is totally worth a reading. Emika is a huge nerd that hacks the most important competition game of her world, a world in which virtual reality has reached incredible levels. Hideo is Steve Jobs 2.0, he has created incredible lenses which are able to communicate with your brain and let you live unimaginable experiences. Honestly this is my dream, with such an instrument I could make characters of my favourite books be real ? and I bet that every good lover of a fantasy novel would give all his money to see a dragon, well with neuroglasses you can. By the way, Hideo hires Emika to capture a hacker that is trying to ruin his competition but there are so many secrets that need to be discovered !

Let me tell you that the games are described so well and Marie Lu’s experience into the video game industry is very clear and helped her a lot. As everyone she is fascinated by the thousands of opportunities that technology can open but she is also aware of the risks. Everyone should be aware. I am definitely super excited to read the sequel!

I am just blown away and can't wrap my thoughts around the awesomeness of this book. Highly recommend and the narrator is top notch!

Voice is wonderful. Story had instalove which was annoying and had the casual "I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding" moment 3 times but I must admit, not a bad book.

Forced myself to finish this. This sounded like it was written by someone who very vaguely understands how hacking/coding/the dark web works. The writing itself was mediocre. The story was predictable with so many plotholes that it was frustrating. The narrator completely fails at doing accents. Would've been better if she didn't try in the first place. I want the last 11 hours of my life back.

This was extremely fast paced in my opinion and the writing frustrated me at times: 1) I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding. 2) Why are we not talking about how accepting the Japanese characters were of a person with TATOOS? 3) I can get back why Emi liked the guy since before the book started but... hello, power imbalance?
The twists are good enough for me to want to reach out the next book though. And even when in my mind it was a crazy idea: I saw that “zero real identity” coming since “spoiler” was introduced in the story.
Finally, the pacing was only an issue for me when it came to the friendships here. If Instalove bothers people on a regular basis, can we introduce the concept of Instafriendship?

The book had a little too much romance in it in my opinion and a bit too predictable, but otherwise it was a fantastic story that incorporates interesting ideas that are relevant to today. Somewhat similar to Ready Player One. Romance is understandable, I'm just not used to reading something like that.
