About this audiobook

"Raw and gripping." —Jason Reynolds, New York Times bestselling coauthor of All American Boys

A must-read!" —Angie Thomas, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Hate U Give

Raw, captivating, and undeniably real, Nic Stone joins industry giants Jason Reynolds and Walter Dean Myers as she boldly tackles American race relations in this stunning debut.

Justyce McAllister is top of his class and set for the Ivy League—but none of that matters to the police officer who just put him in handcuffs. And despite leaving his rough neighborhood behind, he can't escape the scorn of his former peers or the ridicule of his new classmates.

Justyce looks to the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for answers. But do they hold up anymore? He starts a journal to Dr. King to find out.

Then comes the day Justyce goes driving with his best friend, Manny, windows rolled down, music turned up—way up, sparking the fury of a white off-duty cop beside them. Words fly. Shots are fired. Justyce and Manny are caught in the crosshairs. In the media fallout, it's Justyce who is under attack.

Such a powerful and thought-provoking read that tackles racism, police brutality, discrimination, and social justice!

It made me feel a LOT of things; outrage and disbelief among other things.

Oh this book, this book, this book! Nic Stone did her thing. The story centers around Justyce, a young black male trying to make sense of today's world. He is intelligent, and though he may not have been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he attends a prestigious and predominately white high school where he often feels like a fish out of water. We get to know him through the letters he pens to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as dialogue between him and his classmates..

What I love about the book is the heavy discussion topics that take place in Doc's classroom. I feel like I got glimpse into the troubles constantly whirling around in the mind of a young black man, from being accepted among his white peers, turning a blind eye to subtle and sometimes overt racism, and questioning his own blackness. He does this all while trying to maintain an attitude that Dr. King would bear. I also enjoyed a look into the perspectives of those belonging to the racial majority and how often individuals are blind to the struggles of those around them.

I listened to this book on audio and loved the narrator. The book was so impactful that I have ordered myself a physical copy. 5 stars

I purchased the audio and also the actual novel for my son to read. As a mother of a young black teenager, it was important for us to read this book together.

We will go to lunch this weekend actually and discuss our thoughts concerning the many topics explored by the author from racial profiling, teen love interests, peer pressure, affirmative action, interracial relationships, retaliation, Ivy League schools, HBCU schools, gangs, classism in America, and the continued deterioration of equality in our beloved America. I often wonder how Dr. Martin Luther King would feel today about the ideals of what constitutes progress and the reality of being black in America in 2019.

I enjoyed the book and experienced a range of emotions from tears, laughter, anger, and a few Amens. I will definitely be passing this book on for others to read.

Don't read the synopsis. Go into this blind. It's quick, it's important, it's worthy of your time.

I don’t know why it took me so long to read this book. I’m sitting here at work. Just finished it and I swear I’m shaking as I type this. This book hits home. Just like The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas this book needs to be in schools everywhere. My heart hurts and I just. I can’t even put my words together for this. My second read of 2019 and I’m already this deep in the feels. I read this as an ebook along with audio and I’m not sure who narrates this but hell he makes me want him to narrate all the books. He gives you such a strong feeling and it’s like I can imagine it. Oh my Goodness I swear I’m letting everyone I know to read this book. It’s something that NEEDS to be read and I NEED it to be a movie. Great job Nic Stone. You just got yourself a new fan!

O Audiobook é muito bom, assim como a história, que apesar de curta em páginas consegue passar muito bem a mensagem que propõe. É uma leitura importante sobre racismo e deveria um livro lido por todo jovem, mas que também ensina ao adulto.

This book was eye opener on what’s really going on today, the emotions make you feel as if your going on a journey. It also gives you many perspectives on how people view the world which was great. On another note you’ll never get bored reading this because I feel like everyone can relate to this book.

Writing is poorly done. The topic is important but characters are flat, everything is told versus shown, and it is written like a high school project.
I really think it is overhyped based on its topic than its merit. There are other books handling this subject much better.

This book is nothing what I expected it to be, it was so much more than that. I laughed, cried and had so much hope for the characters in this book. The narrator did an amazing job at really pulling me into this reading.

I really enjoyed the format of this book. It mixed everyday thoughts and dialogue with a journal-esque view. It was a refreshing story that didn't look to point fingers, but effectively call out issues that are evident in today's society with mainstream media. Overall a good read.

It was such a great experience of a young black man's struggle to be a better man, a better person, in a world so bent on bringing him down and seeing him fail. It was filled with truth and love and made me laugh and cry. Highly recommend.
