About this audiobook

Along with his volunteer work at the local fire department, running his Amish farm keeps Jamie Riehl busy. He barely has time to eat at the family table, never mind find someone to date. But when he meets Kayla Dienner, he is smitten.

Kayla tries hard to deny her attraction to Jamie. After all, she's spent the last year discouraging her younger brother, Nathan, from becoming a firefighter. The death of their older brother in a fire a year ago is fresh in her mind-she can't bear the idea of putting her heart on the line every time the sirens blare.

Then tragedy strikes, and Jamie wants to extinguish any flame between him and Kayla. Can Kayla set aside her own fears to save the love she was determined to deny?

Title: A Place At Our Table (An Amish Homestead Novel)Author: Amy ClipstonPages: 336Year: 2017Publisher: ZondervanMy rating 5 out of 5 stars.Amy Clipston is one of my favorite Amish authors as her stories have real substance to them! The author tells a tale that really at times caused me to inhale as I didn’t see where she was taking the characters. Some of the time it was heart-wrenching what the people were dealing with such as grief, loss, guilt and more. The main character that stuck out to me was Jamie Reihl, a young man who had so much on his plate. Jamie is a volunteer firefighter and helps run his father’s growing dairy farm, which truly doesn’t leave Jamie much of a social life. When his mother suddenly is no more, Jamie can’t seem to right the world under his feet. On top of that, some of the family dynamics make the grieving period much more difficult to walk through.Kayla is a young Amish woman in the same community who knows how Jamie is feeling, but because of different experiences. In fact, Kayla’s whole family longs to minister to Jamie, if he would only open is his heart to the truth of what happened and believe God can make beauty from ashes.Amy writes stories that deal with real life issues and doesn’t make the Amish community appear perfect nor the people living there perfect either. I hope you read this novel and some of her others if you like stories that can reflect real life, people, events, faith and so much more. There is to be a second installment to the series titled, Room on the Porch Swing coming out in May 2018, and I for one will be reading it as soon as I can get my hands on a copy!I hope you join me in the continuing adventure in the Homestead Amish series!Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Another good read from the talented hands of Mrs. Clipston. I was super excited when I read the blurb for this book. Being married to a firefighter, I'm always partial to books that include a firefighter or anything to do with rescuing. So, when I saw that this was not only another awesome Amish novel, but that it was about an Amish firefighter, I was instantly pulled to it. And, I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It was a good combination. Meeting Jamie and Kayla was like meeting up with long ago friends. Their characters were instantly a part of me and I loved watching their story unfold. Dealing with pain and tragedy, these two hearts beat as one from their first meeting. Watching them grow in their feelings for each other was a refreshing start to a new series. Like Kayla, when the sirens go, my heart skips a beat. I hold my breath until my husband is home safe and sound. The way Mrs. Clipston blends everyday life of firefighting with the plain, simple living of the Amish is a treat for sure! This is definitely a 4 star, highly recommended read if you want something different. It's detailed and rich, and the characters don't stay characters for long. Each page turn brings you closer to the hearts of Kayla and Jamie, and I am excited to see what Mrs. Clipston has in store for us with book 2! Fantastic job! *I received a complimentary copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or negative.*

Amish volunteer firefighter James meets young Amish woman Kayla: object - romance. Only it takes sooooo long! James and Kayla start off on the wrong foot. They meet when her family’s barn burns down and her younger brother is injured. But they work through those differences. However, others arise when James’s family suffers a tragedy. Then those work. And then they don’t. But they do. But they don’t! Readers might think they were pulling petals off a daisy saying, he loves me, she loves me not, etc. The tale is an interesting one, and so are the characters. And the way the characters deal with grief is well done. But as far as dealing with the romance angle, it often seemed like they were teenagers instead of adults. In fact, the teenaged siblings seemed more mature at times. Still, it was an entertaining tale.

This was one of my favorite books I have read by Amy Clipston. This had romance and a little bit of tragedy. Both Kayla and Jamie must overcome some tough obstacles to make it together. This will have you laughing and crying. I believe that this will make a great beach read or anytime read.

Jamie Riehl is a Firefighter in an Amish Community in Lancaster County. He is attending a barn fire on the property of the Dienner when he has to rescue the youngest child, Nathan. He meets Kayla, Nathan's sister and something clicks, that is until Jamie encourages Nathan to sign up for firefighter training. Simeon, Kayla's older brother was killed in a firefighting accident and they are still getting over it. Kayla just can't allow her heart and her family to go through anymore heartache. What if she were to lose another brother to a fire as well? What if she lets Jaimie into her heart and he is killed? She is not able to resist Jamie and she becomes more attached to him as the story progresses. The romance between Kayla and jamie seems to on again off again throughout the book. When a situation occurs that rocks Jamie's world, he is not sure if he will ever have time to devote to a girlfriend.

I really liked Jamie and Kayla and my heart went out to both of them. Kayla did aggravate me at times, not willing to give Jamie the benefit of the doubt, but then again, she was dealing with her past situations as well. As Jamie dealt with his guilt by working himself ragged at both the farm and firehouse, I wanted to give him a hug and a slap at the same time. It was nice to see how these two families became entwined in each other's lives so quickly, just like you would expect in a small community. I enjoyed this story and look forward to the next one in this series. This is the first book I have read by Amy Clipston and it seems that her previous books are even better than this one based on reviews. It looks like I may have found another wonderful author to follow. Thanks to Zondervan who generously provided me with a copy of this book to read.

“A Place at Our Table” by Amy Clipston is the first book in the “Amish Homestead” series. It deals with very realistic issues and can be a heavier read at times, but the romance is so sweet. I don’t usually expect Amish books to deal with such complex topics, but I really enjoyed it!The characters in this book deal with loss, fear, guilt and grief. I felt the first half of the book is rather heavy; but as it shifted to focus more on the romance, the tone turns lighter and sweeter. I really appreciate the lessons the story includes, such as trusting the Lord with our futures and that tomorrow is never promised so you should live your life to the fullest. There are some great relationships and friendships in this book. I appreciate seeing the family and sibling relationships, which play a big role in the story. The romance is sweet and slow building. I found myself really rooting for Kayla and Jamie (our main characters) and their relationship. All in all, I enjoyed this book. In the beginning it was slower for me and dealt with some heavy topics, but as the story progressed, I found myself invested in the characters. I would especially recommend this book to fans of Amish fiction.Content: This is a clean read with no mature content.Rating: I give this book 3.5 stars.Genre: Amish; Christian fiction; RomanceI want to thank the Fiction Guild, Amy Clipston and Zondervan for the complimentary copy of this book for review. This book is on my list for top picks for 2017. The emotions in the story were so real, I cried along with the characters. Two families each dealing with a tragedy come together with food and compassion to heal. I would love to sit at the table with these families and listen as they share their pain and encouragement. Kayla was such a sweet character and I love how she tried to look after her younger brother. When you lose someone due to their job , it’s hard to watch another of your family members want to follow in their footsteps. Her family has gone through a devastating loss and are trying to move on. I really liked Nathan and wanted to give him a hug. He seemed so mature for his age and handled his grief very well. What I liked best about him was his eagerness to be a volunteer firefighter like his older brother. This did cause Kayla distress and made Nathan a bit upset. Her fear was real to her and something she will have to deal with. Have you ever been afraid something bad was going to happen and let fear take over?Jamie is a hard worker and seems to keep himself going in circles with all his responsibilities. Can you remember a time you said “ I’ll fix that soon, or I’ll get to it as soon as I can?” Those words will become the focal point for Jamie when something happens that I didn’t see coming. I wept as I read what the family was going through and felt so sorry for Jamie. He carries guilt over the accident and that fuels him to take on more work. Being a volunteer firefighter gives him an outlet to try and save everyone. Will he be able to forgive himself for something he thinks is his fault? When the two families meet, I loved how they touched each other’s lives by offering compassion and support. The author does a great job of allowing each character to heal in their own way. I loved how the characters learned to trust again and slowly bring two families together. The book is so touching that I didn’t want it to end. I felt like I was sitting at the table with each family watching them interact with each other. Very few authors can write a story that can make you feel like you are there with the characters. This author has done an amazing job of allowing readers to feel like part of the story. As I read the book, I forgot everything around me. I loved reading how Kayla and Jamie became friends and slowly allowed God to bring them closer together. The title of the book is powerful to me, because it represents to me that there is always a place at the table to find forgiveness, healing and love. I purchased a copy of this book and the review is my own opinion.

Thursday, November 16, 2017A Place at Our Table by Amy Clipston, © 2017Amish Homestead, Book 1My Review:Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.2 Corinthians 1:3-4Lancaster County, PennsylvaniaThis story focuses primarily on the Riehl and Dienner families as they meet each other and their lives become interwoven through loss and moving forward. It is a story of hope and continuance in the building of relationships with each other and growing trust in the Lord.James Riehl, affectionately called Jamie by his family and close friends, has a lot on his plate that has nothing to do with food. As the oldest son, he is determined to be responsible for the major upkeep of their Amish homestead to lessen the chores on their dairy farm for their daed, Vernon Riehl. Jamie has been a volunteer fireman since a teenager and is in his middle twenties. He has a twin brother and sister near his age, Mark and Laura, and a younger sister, Cindy, 17. Jamie has recently transferred to Station 5.Kayla Dienner's family own a restaurant in Bird-in-Hand, near the fire station. Her brother, Simeon, was a firefighter and died during a rescue the previous year. Meeting Jamie when Station 5 is called to their barn fire, her younger teen brother, Nathan, discloses his desire to be trained too. Simeon's widow, Eva, and their baby live in an apartment within their family home. They all work together at their Dienner's Family Restaurant. The families initially come together to help during the rebuilding of the Dienner's barn. I liked the growing relationship between Kayla and Jamie's sisters, Laura and Cindy. Struggles surface with what Kayla perceives as interference when Jamie tells Nathan about previous assistance calls, she sees as encouraging him when she has already lost one brother. The support within the families is encouraging for them as difficulties are talked about together with a listening ear. Standing by each other, they develop an ability to see beyond today to a future that can be promising beyond their painful memories and cares. But it doesn't come quickly as burdens are shared and processed. A budding relationship is tenderly nurtured without becoming crowding or advising by those close to them, but knowing "I am here for you."The Making of A Place at Our TableA Place at Our Table is very special to me because it’s the first in my Amish Homestead series. I’m thrilled for my readers to meet the Riehl family members, and experience their joys and heartaches with them. Since Jamie Riehl, the hero in this book, is a volunteer firefighter, this book is dedicated to all the brave men and women who are serving or have served as firefighters and emergency medical technicians. ~ author Amy Clipston***Thank you to BookLook Bloggers for sending a copy of this novel. A Place at Our Table by Amy Clipston is the first An Amish Homestead Novel. Kayla Dienner lives in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania with her family. They are awakened in the middle of the night when lightning strikes their barn setting it on fire. James Riehl is one of the volunteer firefighters who responds and he is smitten with Kayla. Kayla, though, does not appreciate James encouraging her younger brother, Nathan in signing up for volunteer firefighting training. The Dienner family lost their oldest son, Simeon while he was serving as a volunteer. Kayla is attracted to James, but she is not sure she is willing to risk her heart again. After several chance encounters, James starts to court Kayla. Then a tragic accident happens upsetting James and his plans for his future. Kayla becomes frustrated and pushes James away. Is there a chance for these two to have their happily-ever-after? A Place at Our Table is well-written and has a good pace. I thought the characters were well-constructed and realistic. I was immediately drawn into the story and it held my attention until the very last page. There is heartache, love, grief, anger, forgiveness, grace, fear, guilt and regret in A Place at Our Table. I also appreciated the messages regarding God’s will, power of prayer, and His has plans for each of us. It is lovely to see how an Amish community comes together to help their neighbors. It is a shame there is not more of this in our world. I enjoyed the Amish volunteer firefighter angle. This is my first Amish novel with this theme (very unique). A Place at Our Table is a heartwarming as well as heartbreaking story. I look forward to reading the next An Amish Homestead Novel (Room on the Porch Swing) when it comes out in the spring.

It was almost as if I were watching this story unfold in slow motion, and found myself yelling “No”, and knew exactly what was going to happen, and having no way to prevent it.Heartache prevails here, and enough grief to cover everyone, and yet you feel God’s presence and love covering these souls. Can a seasoned griever help one with new grief, or will they end up helping each other, and that is the hope. This story shows personal grief, but because we are with the emergency responders, we meet a lot of tragic situations head on. Will working and living in this situation be the catalyst to bring two hurting people together, or the ultimate reason they go their separate ways.I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Zondervan, and was not required to give a positive review.
