I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Spinning the Moon by Karen White. Normally I am not a fan of historical fiction but these books were the exception. I did prefer the the first book out of the two. I found her writing to be refreshing and enjoyable. I loved her characters!

I received Spinning the Moon from LibraryThing for review. I had previously read White's novel Flight Patterns and loved it. This audiobook is actually her first two books, all spiffed up and republished into one. I really loved the first story, I think because of the time travel element to it. The second story was very interesting but didn't quite grab me like the first one did.The stories are wonderful historical fiction tales, set in the Civil War time. I also enjoyed the narrators of both stories. Their narrations were enough different from each other so it made it easy to believe I was listening to two different stories. They both did a great job with the different characters and made the stories come alive for me.

This is book one in a collection of 2 classic Karen White novels. During a Lunar Eclipse Laura Truitt travels back to Georgia near the end of the Civil War. She shows up at the precise place her daughter (in the present) went missing. She searches for her daughter sure this is where she must have traveled to as well. Her arrival is suspect. A kind family takes her in with secrets and suspicions of their own. How far is Laura willing to go to get her daughter back and as well as get back to her own time? She soon finds herself fighting for her life in order to get back to her previous life. Susan Bennett narrates both the female and male voices well with just enough accent to thrust the listener into the story.

Ugh. I had a really hard time with this book. I couldn't get through the second book so my review is for the first one, In the Shadow of the Moon. It's a poor imitation of Outlander. Woman accidentally travels in time, into the past during a war, ends up staying with a family, and falls in love with the wounded war hero. She's accused of being a spy, needs to get back home, blah blah blah. The war is the Civil War and the soldier is a Confederate soldier. The worst part of all this is, the main character, a modern day woman, actually defends slavery! I was disgusted. And I've noticed that Karen White has this tendency to stereotype the characters in her books. All the southerners are hardworking, passionate people of integrity while the northerners are cold, ruthless, and heartless. I can't even count the number of times I rolled my eyes. The worst part of the book was (SPOILER AHEAD!) that when the main character found her missing daughter, the one who had disappeared through time, she not only didn't recognize her, she decided to leave her behind! No sane person would do that. Definitely skip this one.

I received the audiobook version of Spinning the Moon as part of Early Reviewers. The audiobook is actually a compilation of two of Karen White's books, In the Shadow of the Moon and Shadows of Goodbye. I really didn't have any expectations for either of these books and the giant box of CDs sat on my backseat for quite some time. However, I have a long commute and one day couldn't find my audio cable to listen to something via audible, so I had no choice but to old school via compact disc. To my surprise, both of these books were great. They had wonderful characters, great location, excellent Gothic feeling plots that kept you guessing, and better than average writing. I was surprised to find out that the original front covers for both books made then look like trashy bodice rippers, because I didn't get that feeling from the books themselves. Would definitely recommend to anyone who was a fan of Du Murrier's Rebecca or Collins's Girl in the White Dress.

This is the perfect example of how we discover a favorite author getting better and better as the years go on and from whence they came. This book incorporates two of Karen Whites first writings and I saw so much of what I loved in them, but also realized that the middle of the books waned for me then picked up pace at the end. That was what I didn't enjoy, but the beginning and premise of the book hooked me at the get go. Her new stuff, I eat right up as fast as she can put it out, not very fast, because she is good! Needless to say, this is how a reader and an author is born!

I can understand why Karen White reintroduced these two early novels. In the Shadow of the Moon has a time travel theme which is currently trending. Both books are set in Civil War era south, also popular. I would categorize them historical suspense romances. I've never ready anything by Karen White before, so cannot compare these novels to her later ones. There is more romance than I would like, but both are enjoyable stories with both predictable story lines and good surprises. Whispers of Goodbye seemed to drag on a bit, but still a fun book. I listened to the audiobook. Susan Bennett's reading of In the Shadow of the Moon was excellent. Her accents contributed to the sense of time and place.

I was fortunate to receive this book on CD from Recorded Books through the Library Things Early Review program. I have enjoyed Karen White's books in the past so was looking forward to this one. I was not disappointed. It was an intriguing story with a different twist. I thoroughly enjoyed.

*I received this in an Early Reviewer giveaway.I really enjoyed this! And it's two stories in one! The first a romantic time travel story and the second a mystery. I love anything to do with time travel so I was excited to start and I wasn't disappointed. And the narrator did an amazing job! There are some that lull you to sleep with their monotone voices, but hers was captivating and so so good.
