About this audiobook

In this intriguing novel of romance, mystery, and clever disguise set in Victorian England, a young woman investigates the murder of her own father. After the mysterious death of her father, Miss Gillian Young takes a new job as the principal costume designer at the renowned Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. But while she remembers her father as a kind, well-respected man of the Police Force, clues she uncovers indicate he'd been living a double life: a haunting photograph of a young woman; train stubs for secret trips just before his death; and a receipt for a large sum of money. Are these items evidence of her father's guilty secrets? His longtime police partner thinks so. Then Gillian meets the dashing Viscount Thomas Lockwood. Their attraction is instant and inescapable. As their romantic involvement grows, Gillian begins to suspect even Lockwood's motives. Does Lord Lockwood truly love her? Or is his interest a front for the desire to own her newly inherited property? And what should she make of her friend's suggestion that Lockwood or men like him were involved in the murder of her father? Soon Gillian is convinced that her father has left evidence somewhere that can prove his innocence and reveal the guilty party. But someone wants to stop her from discovering it. The closer she comes to uncovering it, the more menacing her opposition grows. With her life on the line, Gillian takes on an ingenious disguise and takes on the role of a lifetime to reveal the true killer-before it's too late both for her and for those that she loves.

Title: A Lady in Disguise (Daughters of Hampshire #3)Author: Sandra ByrdPages: 376Year: 2017Publisher: HowardMy rating is 4 out of 5 stars.Lord Thomas Lockwood has been out riding and noticed the neglected home of his neighbor, Lord Palmer. After Lord Palmer’s death, his widow couldn’t keep up with the repairs. Now that his widow has died, the home is to be inherited by his granddaughter, a seamstress in London. Thomas makes note of repairs at the granddaughter’s request and begins a friendship with her due to their mutual love of the theatre. Even though they are from two completely different social classes, a romance begins.Gillian Young is mourning the untimely death of her father in a cart accident. He was a well-respected police officer so Gillian thought until no one shows up at his funeral. Come to find out, her father is suspected of participating in money laundering, prostitution with young girls and other crimes. Gillian just can’t believe her beloved father is guilty, so she begins her own investigation. She meets with immediate roadblocks and interference from her police force. She is advised to just let the matter drop. He always kept meticulous files on the cases he worked, so where is the file for his last case? His former partner can’t find it nor can anyone else? Gillian knows the file will contain the answers she seeks, but the more she investigates, the more threats that arrive. Can Thomas be trusted? She knows he is interested in her family home in Hampshire, so he is just pretending to like her in order to gain her land and her family home? Is there anyone on the police force she can trust? This novel combines two of my favorite genres, British mystery and historical British romance. I really enjoyed the mystery presented by the death of Gillian’s father and I thought the author did an excellent job of depicting how helpless a woman alone in that day could be, especially against the rotten eggs in the police force. I also really liked Gillian’s care for the theater waifs. She was taught from an early age by her mother to care for the poor, which was a great example to set. Gillian’s willingness to forgive was also an excellent example of displaying Christ’s mercy. My only negative is that there was too much time spent on the sewing aspect of the story, which slowed it down in some places. I still would recommend this book as it will certainly entertain.

Really enjoyed this wonderful story. Love the gothic angle. Gillian must find out if her father was a police officer on the take or did someone murder him to stop him from finding out who the bad guys were. Love Gillian and Thomas. They interact wonderfully together. I did not want to stop reading to go to work or bed. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I have given of my own free will.

Sandra Byrd combines meticulous research with excellent story-telling in her newest novel, A Lady in Disguise. Victorian England comes to life within the pages of this historical novel laced with gothic overtones. I became fully immersed in Gillian Young’s story, so much so that the hours and pages flew by — this one is unputdownable!Gillian Young’s father has just been buried and she is left to find her way and living in the theatre business. But a mystery surrounds her police inspector father’s death and his alleged unsavory doings that skirted the law he vowed to uphold. A young woman of determination, Gillian is set upon discovering the truth, but danger lurks in every dark alley of London. It is obvious that Sandra Byrd is devoted to accurate research. She naturally inserts details that add an authenticity to her story. From the history of the theatre, to fashion, to the sport of fencing, to the description of the coal fog, to the language used, A Lady in Disguise is a thoroughly Victorian novel. The action of the novel progresses at a steady pace, feeling neither rushed or plodding, but just right. The characters are well-developed and become dear to the reader. And a happily-ever-after is certainly in Gillian’s future. There is a twist at the end of the novel that I never saw coming, but was the perfect addition to the faith threads woven throughout the book. Trust in others, self and God is explored, along with dependence on a God who promises to provide and protect.Fans of historical fiction will love this book. But I think A Lady in Disguise goes beyond just genre fiction; I would recommend it to any reader. It is also a perfect selection for your book club. Make sure to check it out.Highly Recommended.Audience: adults.Great for book clubs.(Thanks to Howard Books and the author for a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

Gillian Young is a talented seamstress and works for the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane and her father has just died in an accident. She finds out that her father may have led a double life. She meets Viscount Thomas Lockwood, a very handsome young man who is actually a neighbor in Hampshire where the family home, Winton Park is. After her father's death, she finds out that her mother, also deceased, wants the house to be donated to the 'Cause'. The Cause is where there are people who want to stop the human trafficking that is taking place. One organization, The Salvation Army, that tries to do good and help the helpless if you will. A lot of children, mainly girls are sold into slavery and often into prostitution and this is also a topic that is not often talked about in certain circles, this is Victorian England in the late 1800's. Gillian ends up taking into her home two girls that if left on their own would have been entered into this life. She soon grows fond of these two girls and they help her make the costumes for the theater. After Gillian has left her father's funeral and returns home she finds that her home has been searched by the police. They seem to be looking for proof of her father's supposed dishonesty. She finds herself being followed and does not know whom to trust. She searches her home and Winton Park to see if she can find proof that her father was innocent of any wrongdoing.A Lady in Disguise is the third novel in the Daughters of Hampshire series. I have read them all and I have enjoyed each one. The depth of the characters, the plot etc is written in such a way that you can almost feel the mists rolling along the streets and the darkness of the tale reminds me of other Gothic authors that I have read over the years, particularly Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart. The research is impeccable and the story is romantic but a clean romance. Very reminiscent of authors from the early to mid 1900's. I love all of Sandra's books, especially her Tudor series, my favorite era in historical fiction. I look forward to whatever comes next from Sandra Byrd!

This is the third book in the Daughters of Hampshire series and the second that I’ve read. In this tale as the story opens our heroine, Gillian Young is burying her father. She is the granddaughter of a lord but her mother ran away from that life to be actress. She married a man of the middle class and her parents just really didn’t want to see her or her husband. They did relent some for Gillian. Gillian has proven to be a very talented seamstress and makes her living sewing for one lofty patroness and for the theatre. As Gillian returns from burying her father she finds her house being unceremoniously searched. She is then told that her father is under suspicion for illegal acts. She finds it hard to believe and she she starts following some clues but they only lead to threats against her. She has someone to go to – her father’s partner, the Inspector and his son, Francis also a police officer who wants to court her. Problem is her neighbor back at the ancestral house, Viscount Lockwood also is pursuing her. But are both suits genuine?I truly enjoyed this historical mystery/romance. It was a solid mix of both genres with a great cast of characters. Ms. Byrd creates a very real world for her characters and while they are fictional she does add a few real life figures into her tale. Her descriptions of the lives of both the rich and the poor are well drawn and I could easily imagine the places as I read. The same could be said for the clothing – which is important when a fair part of the book revolves around the main character’s creations.I will admit to figuring out the bad guy pretty early on but it didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the book for me. I liked the characters and their stories and didn’t want to leave their world.

Darkness in Victorian timesAn engaging mystery and romance set smack in the middle of the Drury Lane theatre district of London in Victorian times. There's treachery, mystery and fear. Young children, the 'pantomime children', discarded when too old or when the season is over and who are lured into darker employment in London or taken to Paris are at the heart of the matter.Miss Gillian Young is a talented seamstress whose father, a hitherto respected inspector in the police force, has recently been killed in a mysterious 'accident'. Gillian is left with nothing but puzzles, and fear. What happened to her father? It seems he is being accused of corruption and more. Few of the constabulary turns out for his funeral. Gillian is determined to find out the truth, despite the menacing warnings she has to let things be.Gillian has inherited a property outside London. There she meets the handsome Viscount Thomas Lockwood who owns property adjacent to her's. They are attracted to one and other. Gillian also becomes acquainted with a young policeman who is the son of a colleague of her father's.But threats and disquieting happenstances are closing in upon Gillian. Who can be trusted? Who are the villains? Why are the police searching her properties?Gillian's ambitions as a costume designer is fascinating. When she is given the opportunity to be the principal designer for the theatre production of Cinderella she employs young people from a home for pantomime children her mother supported, The Cause. The back story of the pantomime children, their exploitation and unknown futures lends this story strength. Child trafficking has never died and this story hides these dark secrets in its background. With strong Christian underpinnings, Boyd's end note and research about the pantomime children and their inclusion in this novel takes the story to a different level and is to be commended.A NetGalley ARC

Tuesday, March 21, 2017A Lady in Disguise by Sandra Byrd, © 2017Daughters of Hampshire Series, Book 3My Review:I thoroughly enjoy reading Sandra Byrd's historical fiction novels! In this story the protagonist will be solving a mystery close to her heart ~ what is behind the death of her father and... henceforth uncovering circumstances revealing a hidden life?England ~ early-spring 1883Miss Gillian Young and her attendant stand graveside at the burial of her Papa at the chapel in the village near Winton next to her Mamma with none in attendance beyond the vicar. Andrew Young had been an Inspector with the Metropolitan Police Chelsea division. Upon the late night arrival at Cheyne Gardens in Chelsea at her townhouse, they find there has been a break-in ~ and the interloper is still there rummaging through their house and goods. Questions loom as Gillian sets out on an adventure of her own to tie up the loose ends. Where it will carry her is unknown to find truth of dubious activities that has escaped all of them.As the newly appointed principal costume designer for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and individual seamstress of designer gowns for a titled lady of merit for the April-to-mid-August Season, Gillian has access within the theatre and society. Her mother had been an actress here in past golden days. She aspires to deem clues to solve the mysterious happenings before the officials and those wanting secret substances to remain hidden.I took a deep breath and forced my mind to recall the joy of seeing my latest creations on that stage. What a pleasure that had been!--A Lady in Disguise, 32.In her search for seamstresses to assist with her theatrical wardrobe for the upcoming show, Gillian knows just where to begin her search: The Theatrical Mission.Like herbs in a pestle, life steadily ground out the essence of those who did not have access to comforts.--Ibid., 62.Her mother had spoken of the Cause in notes Gillian uncovered and instead of rejecting them, she indeed cared to include those no longer needed in pantomimes because of their advancing ages beyond being "cute."~*~Enters Lord Lockwood whom Gillian had gazed on horseback afar at the graveyard. He soon came to deliver a hamper from his mother with tea and delicacies. As heiress of Winton Park, her mother's childhood home, he offered to assemble a list of attentions needed for the large country home and estate.Upon returning to London to her work obligations, he stated he too was frequently in attendance to his investments and other concerns. A perfect opportunity for arrival it seems.Gillian first saw Thomas Lockwood's image again in her sketches that seemed to surface unbidden in her drawings.Until his carriage arrives at their London townhouse with a messenger requesting if he might call and bring his mother in attendance? Thus, begins an informal acquisition of the needs of Winton, and an open door to friendship.Warnings come to not interfere with the past and her visit to King Street where her father met his untimely death. As you likely will know, Gillian is not one to be set aside. Sandra Byrd is a tremendous author with detailed characters, which I love, and a firm story surrounding a past and a future. A hope attained!~*~You may read this book as a stand-alone, but you will love books 1 and 2 in the series too!!I was provided a copy of A Lady in Disguise by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
