About this audiobook

Another fantasy audiobook from Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series, which began with the Alex, Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award-winning, World Fantasy Award finalist, Every Heart a Doorway.

Beneath the Sugar Sky
, the third audiobook in McGuire's Wayward Children series, returns listeners to Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children in a contemporary fantasy for fans of all ages. At this magical boarding school, children who have experienced fantasy adventures are reintroduced to the "real" world.

When Rini lands with a literal splash in the pond behind Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children, the last thing she expects to find is that her mother, Sumi, died years before Rini was even conceived. But Rini can’t let Reality get in the way of her quest – not when she has an entire world to save! (Much more common than one would suppose.)

If she can't find a way to restore her mother, Rini will have more than a world to save: she will never have been born in the first place. And in a world without magic, she doesn’t have long before Reality notices her existence and washes her away. Good thing the student body is well-acquainted with quests...

A tale of friendship, baking, and derring-do.

Warning: May contain nuts.

"Beneath the Sugar Sky" was different than the first two books in the series, as the characters were on a quest, but overall I really enjoyed it. The plot was fun, it developed more some well-known characters, introduced some cool new ones, and we visited Nancy and Sumi's world. It doesn't have a lot of stakes, but it was still enjoyable.

It also helps that we were following my favourite character from "Every Heart a Doorway", Kade, and there is some more focus on Christpoher, and I'm in love with him now. Besides them, we get to know three new main characters: Cora (who I genuinely liked it, and would love to read more books about her), Nadya (who I couldn't care less, to be honest, although her world sounds interesting), and Rini (who was honestly so annoying at first, but kind of grew on me).

During their quest, they also visit two different worlds: the Halls of the Dead, where they find Nancy again (it was great to see her in a natural habitat!), and Confection, which honestly reminded me a lot of the world made of sweets from Wreck It Ralph. This part of visiting different worlds was honestly my favourite, besides the characters, as I found it so fascinating how different they are, with their different rules and features.

I read "Beneath the Sugar Sky" as an audiobook, and the narrator was pretty good: it was like I was being told a fairy tale, which I think added up to my enjoyment of the whole book.

Seaman McGuire wrote a brilliant, masterful story, as always. I really hope we get a book detailing Cora’s story before she came to the school.

Just as good as the previous ones in the series, but this one was more Alice's Adventures in Wonderland like. That's probably because the children travel to a nonsense world this time, made of sugar and baked into reality, but there's still the familiar theme of walking skeletons and a flute made of a human bone and the halls of the death. This one continues to tackle issues like body shame and identity, while maintaining its unique way of making everyone whole, complex and layered and a hero.

This series just keeps getting better and so far never disappoint ... I loved the subjects that were discussed in this book , such as fat shaming ... I think this book can be inspirational and helpful to many who suffer from bullying by any kind .

I liked the other books in the series much better than this one. I didn't like the introduction of the new character, Cora. She seemed very one dimensional and took away from my enjoyment of the overall story.

This was a fun book to read/listen to and also I enjoyed each character following their journey and friendships, a book full of adventure that I see worth going on from a land of death to the land of candy ? ?.

The Audiobook was just horrible, maybe if I would read it as a real book I would enjoy it more. The narrator was screaming all the time, especially as Rini.

This is my third try with this series. I really wish I wasn't struggling so much. I really wish I loved this as much as everyone else.

These books are rife with tell and not show, and it feels like I'm wading through all this tell before I can get into the actual story. I actually love most of the characters, and the author is making me hate them with how much writing that she surrounds them with. I actually hated Rini, which was kind of a problem since the entire story is based on saving her.

I guess I'm just not getting it, you guys. I just don't find these books compelling. They're weak and seem to go on too long, which is terrible, since they're really short. Even the audiobook version isn't hooking me. Although I think the author does a great job at reading.

I won't do the next one. I'm kind of curious about Jack and Jill's next installment though, so I'll probably give that a try. I'm expecting to DNF it though.

Not as good as the first two, but I still enjoyed this book. Felt more childish than the first two books.
