About this audiobook

They called themselves “the lucky ones”

They were seven children either orphaned or abandoned by their parents and chosen by legendary philanthropist and brain surgeon Dr. Vincent Capello to live in The Dragon, his almost magical beach house on the Oregon Coast. Allison was the youngest of the lucky ones living an idyllic life with her newfound family…until the night she almost died, and was then whisked away from the house and her adopted family forever.

Now, thirteen years later, Allison receives a letter from Roland, Dr. Capello’s eldest son, warning her that their father is ill and in his final days. Allison knows she must go home again and confront the ghosts of her past. She’s determined to find out what really happened that fateful night—was it an accident, or, as she’s always suspected, did one of her beloved family members try to kill her?

But digging into the past can reveal horrific truths, and when Allison pieces together the story of her life, she learns the terrible secret at the heart of the family she once loved but never really knew.

Narrator voice was like hearing a vibrating needle scratching from inside a full aquarium. i couldn’t keep listening even if the story itself sounded interesting.

I almost didn’t finish this book, but once I start a book I can’t not finish it. It didn’t get interesting till about chapter 25. Before that it was painfully boring.

Boy, that was, ummmmm…AWFUL! The reason I gave this any stars at all was the great narration by Emily Woo Zeller who actually managed to make this piece of garbage sound intelligent! What a waste of time, and so glad it is finally over!!! ?

Mostly entertaining, but weird relationships that took away from book.

It was pretty predictable. There’s also weird turns that we’re a little unnecessary and uncomfortable involving siblings. Not what I expected.

The story was good. Not great. A little simple. The female voices were good. The male ones-not so much.

DNF 23%. I think the author was trying to squeeze as many 'romantic' illicit tropes as possible within the first few chapters of the book. We are first introduced to the heroine as a mistress/kept woman to her sugar-daddy of 6 years. He ends the relationship because he's expecting a baby to another woman, but that doesn't stop him from wanting one more for the road, and she throws the last remnant of her self-respect out of the window by granting him this final request. Then we find out that she, as a not quite 12 year old, had a very raunchy make out session with her beloved almost 17 year old brother. Okay, so they were foster siblings, but the fact, that they regarded the other as siblings then and still do now when they meet up 13 years later, makes for highly disturbing reading. And that's not even considering the significant and disturbing age disparity between them at the time of the first physical encounter. I've never been into the Flowers in the Attic sort of relationships, so alarm bells were ringing for me by this stage. The reveal of the 'brother' now being a 'Brother' was the final straw for me. Yes, the heroine's romantic interest, the aforementioned foster brother is now a religious monk!!! The book just lost any pretence of credibility at this point. Reading the reviews, apparently things got worse in the ickiness department with enough incestuous material for a new Virginia Andrews series. Not what I bargained for when the blurb was selling it as a modern-day gothic mystery.

Really interesting concept and turn of events, kept my interest nicely and storyline was easy to follow. Mentions a book i have alwayd been fond of and some places close to home as I live on the California coast on the 101 which I thought was cool. Thought it left kind of a dead end which could have been better wrapped up but all in all enjoyable book.

I didn’t like the main character and I thought much of the story would never have happened the way it was presented

It was a fine book. It was full of people who had unrealistic problems. It caused me to want to holler at the lead character several times and say get out of your unrealistic stuck-up world. The ending was typical but left you with a good feeling. Which I guess is why it makes it difficult.

It's a light, easy listening book and yet interesting. Got me hooked all the way through the end.
