About this audiobook
This program includes a prologue and epilogue read by the author.
From New York Times culture reporter Dave Itzkoff, comes the definitive audiobook biography of Robin Williams – a compelling portrait of one of America’s most beloved and misunderstood entertainers.
From his rapid-fire stand-up comedy riffs to his breakout role in Mork & Mindy and his Academy Award-winning performance in Good Will Hunting, Robin Williams was a singularly innovative and beloved entertainer. He often came across as a man possessed, holding forth on culture and politics while mixing in personal revelations – all with mercurial, tongue-twisting intensity as he inhabited and shed one character after another with lightning speed.
But as Dave Itzkoff shows in this revelatory biography, Williams’s comic brilliance masked a deep well of conflicting emotions and self-doubt, which he drew upon in his comedy and in celebrated films like Dead Poets Society; Good Morning, Vietnam; The Fisher King; Aladdin; and Mrs. Doubtfire, where he showcased his limitless gift for improvisation to bring to life a wide range of characters. And in Good Will Hunting he gave an intense and controlled performance that revealed the true range of his talent.
Itzkoff also shows how Williams struggled mightily with addiction and depression – topics he discussed openly while performing and during interviews – and with a debilitating condition at the end of his life that affected him in ways his fans never knew. Drawing on more than a hundred original interviews with family, friends, and colleagues, as well as extensive archival research, Robin is a fresh and original look at a man whose work touched so many lives.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a great biography. I felt that it was unbiased and honest. I really appreciated that it was written by someone who actually spent time with Mr Williams and was not just a researcher or observer of his life.
In addition, the reader of this book was phenomenal. I’m so very glad I chose the audio version rather than reading it myself. His performance of the book really brought it to life. When Itzkoff references one of Robin’s characters, Fred, the reader, did the voice of the character for the quotation. Whenever Mr Williams was quoted Fred did a great impersonation of him, reading his quotes in the clipped, quick manner in which Mr Williams spoke. I can’t praise him enough for a great reading of a really good book. I encourage everyone to listen to the audio version of this book.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It answered questions that we had as to why a genius like Robin would end his life. A very interesting and revealing story of a man who always seemed to be "on". I loved him as a serious actor .
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wonderful read. Ups and downs, but what an amazing guy. Thankful to have experienced his amazingness. God bless & rest easy
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5We all have an idea of who Robin Williams was but this book goes deep into who he really was as a person and where he came from it was very good.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5all about Robin. if that's what you wanna hear about your gonna love it.
it did feel a little distant and a matter a fact at times but it was interesting. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Terrific insight into a genuinely complicated yet warm human being. My only complaint—the word “Marin,” as in California’s Marin County, appears hundreds of times in this book, and the narrator pronounces it wrong! If you’re a native Californian like me you might be wincing a lot.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great insight into the the life of one of my favorite comedians. He will be missed.
