About this audiobook

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.

Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out alive—until, by chance, she learns the identity of Vess’s next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. Driven by a newly discovered thirst for meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna musters every inner resource she has to save an endangered girl . . . as moment by moment, the terrifying threat of Edgler Foreman Vess intensifies.

I listened to about half the book. It was so awful, I just stopped. I wasted precious hours. Awful.

This is one of the most boring books I’ve ever listened to. I’m on chapter 7 and still waiting for something intense and exciting to happen. Maybe it’s because I’ve listened to so many other Dean Koontz and Stephen King books this just isn’t scary or intense enough for me.

Very boring and repetitive (yes we get it, she’s scared and hiding). Gave up after the 4th chapter.

This left me a little flat. Great characters, but the ending could have been developed more. I wanted more interaction between the wonderfully creepy bad-guy and the girls. Amd if I hear "untouched and alive" again, I'll scream. Did the audiobook, and wasn't a fan of the reader... too flat.

Not his best but moved along well. Too much inner guilt.

I found this book a bit long winded the first 2/3 of the novel. I got through it fine and liked the characters and story. I wanted in-depth details in the last chapters about the youngest Sherif aka killer. Also about Ariel's healing. I wanted more in the last two chapters.

Something was off about the narration production.

It was riveting- the unknowns creeping in and out. The heroine’s ability to come back and never give up was positively what kept me reading. That said the bad guy deserved a worse death - but to have him gone for good felt great. And the follow-on between the girls was sweet to know. Thank you Mr. Koontz - you always deliver!
It might make a good movie if some of the killers thoughts and dreams perhaps not shared on film. Creepiest man ever born. Mr. sicko.

Amazing read! It's really riveting! Very intense! Highly recommended! Nail-biting suspense! My favourite thriller novel that I've ever read.

It’s the perfect cat and mouse game between two people who are complete opposites, yet not so different. If it’s your first time reading it, it keeps you tensed up. I haven’t seen the movie for it, but High Tension is almost identical to it, with that infamous twist. Truly a great read.

Grippingly intense! I appreciated that the author didn’t describe different events and efforts unrealistically easy. It gave the story believability .

This book is aptly named. There was not a time in this book where I didn't feel at least uneasy. It was a page turner. There were a couple of issues that I had with the way that one character speaks to the other (trying not to spoil anything!), but other than that pretty minor critique it was an intense, well written book

I've always loved Dean Koontz and this audiobook was riveting and at the end touching. It's an older title but if you haven't read it I highly recommend it.

Boring!!!!!!! I read this because it was highly recommended by a group I belong to. People said it was extremely scary. Not only was it not scary, there was very little action. The book is so long only because every move someone made was about 5 pages of details.

I’m glad I finished it, but I’m just as glad that it’s over. I was annoyed at how wordy it was. It took 5 minutes to say the trees were blowing in the wind. I was tempted to skip forward several times. Other than that, the actual story was good.

It's been years since I have read Dean Kountz. This was a good story, but geez! ... it was so freaking wordy! I don't even know how to explain how UNNECESSARY ALOT of the monolog, dialog was. Someone said it was like he was trying to fulfill a certain number of words - I agree!
