Reviews for Refinery29 Money Diaries
31 ratings4 reviews
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was well worth the listen! Refreshed on a few important things that I need to do. Perfect for basic learners of finance.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I had to stop listening to this; the examples are incredibly smug, trite glimpses into whatever prim and manicured "real lives" somebody caught once on a premium cable channel sounded like through the fourth or fifth up martini at a millenial's bar.
In truth, some of us can suffer identity theft, receive absolutely zero help from law enforcement or financial institutions (instead be made one of the suspects), receive *professional* advice to declare bankruptcy and watch one's accounts like a hawk therafter...subsequently make almost double the minimum payment on each of multiple accounts for 150 consecutive months, survive two consecutive family emergencies and suffering 2/3 (at best) of one's normal income to fulfill a relocation to a half-dead local economy in order to lend support to a struggling family member. Nothing in this book paints even a glimpse of the futility experienced watching the water level rise in the cage while *still* being chained to the ratwheel.
There are costs to finance that aren't discussed here...quicksand-like traps that financiers use to offset how much those with better credit scores ought to cost that get exerted on others, instead. Some of us can bust our asses pairing down to, literally--beans and rice, while paying more than we spent each month while still being dependent on cards due to tourism-based economic swings and still drown in 30% APR and gaps a paycheck just can't stretch. Books like this are absolutely zero-help in real-world scenarios, and they could stand to improve by getting out and talking to people--not just special little gems whose parents could afford to put them through school and have all sorts of little, first-world necessities that make up their daily expenditure; get out into the heartlands and interview some real flesh and blood robots who are propping this country up on sweat and fractured bone for a change.
It's dire outside--try harder to think of a solution than--literally: everyone else out there. MUCH harder, please. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5If you are looking for a basic crash course, this is great! If you already know the basics then it's a good and fun refresher.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5must read or listen to, especially for women. really empowering.
