About this audiobook
And her handsome, brooding new bodyguard isn't helping the situation.
Ivan is the perfect, deadly warrior, a man trained from childhood to be the ultimate protector to the Rios family. His focus on keeping her safe is intense-and a little intoxicating. When the threat of danger cracks his icy control, Maricela realizes she's not the only one fighting against temptation.
Ivan knows that the blood on his hands makes him unworthy of the pure-hearted princess. But from the first kiss, their forbidden affair feels inevitable. He can give her a glimpse of life outside her gilded cage and a lover who wants the woman instead of the crown. The only thing he can never do is promise her forever.
Because spurning her noble suitors to marry her bodyguard wouldn't just be a scandal. It could set off a political firestorm that would tear Sector One apart.
Contains mature themes.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5My favorite part of this book was the focus on what it's like for Maricela to be a Rios princess: the expectations, the pressure, the sense of duty, and the way she internalized all kinds of limitations. A lot of the Sector plots focus on violence -- or the threat of violence -- with espionage, or war. There was almost no violence in this book. But the stakes were still high, and both personal and community well being were impacted.
This book could probably stand alone better than most. The history which impacts the main characters takes place before any of the Sector books, so you don't need the background provided by the plots of the books. It may take a bit longer to adjust to the unique culture of Sector 1: the family of the Prophet, perhaps even the Riders themselves, but I think there's sufficient detail to make that a minor matter. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kit Rocha's world is so intricate and detailed. The world-building that goes into the entire Beyond series and spinoffs is just marvelous. How Kit can keep anything straight while writing is completely beyond me. Must have files that are a mile thick in order to keep everything straight. All that work means that I can't ever wait to get into the Sectors and to find out what new things there are to discover.
Maricela is the Princess of Sector One. Her grandfather was the Prophet, her brother is the King, and her sister is the head of their religion. And she? She is the prize that everyone wants. She's a Rios, she knows her duty, and she'll do it, even if it kills her inside. But what she really wants is Ivan.
Ivan is one of Gideon's Riders. The Riders are the people who get their hands dirty so that the people of Sector One don't have to. He's lived Maricela from afar for years, but now that he's her bodyguard, he spends almost every second of every day with her. While they've been fighting it, that closeness and intimacy has deepened and strengthened their love.
Oh, Ivan and Maricela's story got me right in the feelz. It hurt and it felt good, all in the right ways. Their story was so amazing on so many levels and all the things that are happening are going to have a huge impact on all the Sectors, I think. it's going to be really interesting to watch what's going to keep happening in the Sectors. I need all of the books for all of the characters right now. I can't wait to see what's going to happen with Gideon. All of us who've read the stories are pretty sure who he's in love with, but I wonder if he'll ever be able to get over what's going on.
