About this audiobook

Author and psychiatrist Paul Fleischman gave these talks in Europe and America in 2007. He gave them to various audiences, and the nature of each audience partly shaped the contents of each talk. For example the Boston talk was to mental health professionals in the USA, and the Freiberg talk was to "Mindfulness" researchers in Germany. The content of the talks reflect those circumstances. Several question and answer sessions are included.

Highly recommended listen for seekers of peace and happiness. Clearly brings out what Vipassana is, and more importantly what Vipassana is not. Most grateful to the author for conveying these issues with such clarity.

Diving into Fire Baptized actually marked only the third series I've started in the Urban Fantasy genre. I have to say that the more that I read, the more I get hooked! It's nice to see some strong characters out there, both female and male, who don't go around worrying about romance all the time. They have other, more pressing (and often bloody) things to deal with. It's a nice change of pace.

We meet Lanore Vesta as she witnesses a rather brutal murder, completely by accident. What follows is her battle to figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim herself. I really liked Lanore a lot. Her stubborn and witty attitude drew me in, but it was her compassion for others that really kept me there. She doesn't need a man to save her, Lanore can handle her own and she makes the story. Featuring basic human (or in this case mixbreed) rights, a steamy set of guys to drool over, a sadistic killer, and a dark mystery, Fire Baptized has a little bit of everything. It's hard not to fall in love.

Speaking of falling in love, Lenore has two gorgeous men to choose from in this book. Plus they just so happen to be kick ass shape shifters that can rip your face off in a moment. Each delicious in their own way, MeShack and Zulu are just too steamy for words. I couldn't really decide which of them I liked more, and so I totally understood why Lanore would have the same dilemma. Yes, there is a bit of a love triangle. Still, it doesn't overload the book at all. In my opinion all it does is add a wonderful contrast to the bloody mystery that surrounds it.

Fire Baptized does contain a fair amount of graphic violence, and graphic sexual situations. If you are a reader who is uncomfortable with this subject matter then this probably isn't for you. However if you enjoy a female protagonist who is strong, supporting characters who are seductive and dark in equal parts, and a story line that moves at a lightning pace, then this is a book for you! My only issue was that the climax of the book was so short! I'm sure there is more coming though, and that excites me. I'm ready for more of these characters. Bring on the steam.

Say hello to your new favourite fantasy series.Human beings force supernatural creatures to live in a caged city known as the Habitat. There are all kinds of beings here – shape shifters, vampires, witches and tons more. Each is branded with a mark according to their species, but Lanore has an x brand – meaning mix breed. Mix breeds are treated like second class citizens, inferior in every way. On her way home from classes Lanore is the witness to a vicious murder. The killer knows who she is, and she fears she might be next in his killing spree. With the help of her ex-boyfriend MeShack and the leader of the organisation fighting for mixed breed rights, she must find the killer before he finds her.Welcome to the blog tour for Fire Baptized, organised by the lovely Diverse Book Tours. As soon as I read the synopsis for Fire Baptized I was desperate to read it. It sounded fantastic, and it absolutely is. Let’s start with the world building, which is wonderful. Not only is there a whole host of different beings that Wright describes in very vivid and realistic ways, she has also created a whole back story and rich history for each of the species. I loved the rebels and the fighting for supernatural rights. It was an immensely detailed and fantastically written book. The characters are dark, and extremely interesting. There’s Lanore herself, who’s part fairy and part demon. All she wants is to make it through her classes, and be treated like everyone else. She’s not perfect – she sometimes makes mistakes, but she’s a really great character. MeShack is a shifter, a somewhat arrogant one but both feel like very realistic characters, even with their supernatural powers. The thing that really struck me was that often when you read books in this fantasy genre they are so over the top that they don’t really feel believable. It’s definitely not the case with Fire Baptized. If supernatural beings appeared on the planet tomorrow, caging them and shunning them is exactly what we’d probably do. I really enjoyed the book because it was so easy to dive right into the world. The plot is really addictive, and definitely keeps you guessing. I think it’s often hard to keep readers guessing, but I was still trying to work things out with Fire Baptized. It’s dark and gritty, there’s lots of horror and lots of violence. The habitat is a violent place, and everyone is striving for survival. The violent scenes are very intense, but they really draw you into the action. This book has everything you could want – an intense mystery, lots of supernatural creatures and a love-triangle (which I won’t go into too much detail about because I don’t want to spoil the story!)It’s a very well paced story, and is something different that I haven’t seen for a while. The characters are also from different ethnic backgrounds, something that is not often scene in the fantasy genre. I really enjoyed reading Fire Baptized, and I think fantasy fans will too, it’s a fresh take on a genre that can sometimes feel a bit overplayed. Fire Baptized is also the first in the series, with a second and a third book out now. So what are you waiting for? Get ordering the Santeria Habitat series, you won’t be disappointed!

(Note: I snagged this one for free from Bookrooster, in exchange for an honest review. This didn't influence my opinion.)
There's a lot of things to like about this book- Interesting world building, potential for a series, a heroine you want to see win. Alas, it fell flat for me. One of my largest gripes is stories where you can tell so much is being held in reserve for later books that nothing really develops in each book. I kept waiting for a twist, for something to escalate in a way that surprised me, but all it made me do was sigh and reach for the next book on my virtual pile. There's a lot of potential here, this story just never reached it, and I wasn't into it enough to want to read more of the series to find out if they improve. Still, if what you want is a typical mild paranormal romance that doesn't take any chances, this will fit the bill.

This book was an odd choice to fall into my hands, since I'm not usually reader of the genres that I feel this book falls into: fantasy, romance, or murder mystery (outside of a good ole Sherlock story). It's kind of ridiculous that I don't read much of those three genres, since that leaves out a huge number of books. But the world in this book sounded so inventive, that is what I had to read it for. The habitat is basically a city in a cage with bars going thousands of feet high to keep in supernatural species -- separate from humans. The supernaturals are everything from vampires, shifters, witches, fairies, etc. Though the purebloods are shunned from the human society, the mixbreed supernaturals are shunned even within the habitat. The main character, Lanore, is a mixbreed. Her father was a powerful demon -- she is a pyromancer. She has to choose between two unique guys: one a shifter, a were-cheetah that she has known from childhood. The other is a mysterious mixbreed who has a jeweled tattoo of wings on his back (details like this are the best part of the book). And someone starts to gruesomely murder the supernaturals. It sounds out there -- the book tries to be a bit realistic, like having the supernaturals exist because of experiments that humans did in the 1970s, or the Supreme Court deciding how many decades vampires get to "live". Because of the romancey aspect of the book, it did remind me of Twilight. I don't know much about Twilight except that the girl has to choose between a wolf and a vampire, so I'm not sure how far to compare it to Twilight. It is a bit suspicious that there are mainly witches, vampires, and were-animals, but it's not like Twilight has a patent on everything supernatural. But it also reminded me of one of my favorite shows, for obvious reasons: Supernatural -- which is why I may have read this book in the first place. If anything, this book should be read for its inventiveness. Maybe I'm lacking in other fantasy reading to really compare, but it is an interesting world. I would have liked less romance and more world building.

I have to say that this book was very real written. It's super refreshing when you open a book and it's written really smartly. I enjoyed reading the book, and the descriptions were really spot on, I could paint a picture in my own head about what was going on. I have to say that Lanore is a pretty unique character, she's definitely her own girl, and I think if you lined her up next too characters from other books she would definitely stand out in her own right. She doesn't take crap from anyone, but she's also a really good friend. She's the kind of person you would want to have in your corner. Lanore has some really complex relationships throughout the book, especially with the men in her life. She has this whole triangle thing going on, and there is a lot of history to go behind it. I had a hard time trying to choose which guy I wanted her to end up with. I think that's a pretty impressive feat by the author. In most love triangle situations, sometimes I like both guys (as was the case with this book), but oftentimes it's super easy for me to choose the guy I want the girl to end up with, it's visceral, my gut instinct telling me which one I like more. I didn't have that with this book, I was genuinely torn. If I had to pick the one thing I didn't enjoy as much as the other elements it would have to be the level of violence. For me it just wasn't my thing. Now in no way did the book have violence just for violence sake, there was always a reason that the author painted, but for me I prefer books that are more character driven with a little less violence in them. I will say that I think the violence in the book helped keep the pacing level up higher, which I enjoyed. I think if you are looking for a unique take on the genre you should certainly give this book a try. There is a lot of action, some romance, and generally a little bit of everything, so I think just about anyone could find some elements within this book that they enjoy.

Fire Baptized is an urban fantasy romance that takes place in a alternate world where humans have forced supernaturals to live in caged cities. Lanore is a mixbreed, a second-class citizen even among the other supernaturals. She is trying to go to college, and not to use her power to create fire. She witnesses a murder and comes to the attention of a murderer who is killing other supernaturals. With the help of her ex-boyfriend Meshack and Zulu, the leader of the Mixbreed liberation group, she tries to discover who the murderer is before she becomes the next victim. The author has created an interesting new urban fantasy world. I enjoyed the character of Lanore as well as the two men in her life. There was quite a lot of humour and clever dialogue. The mystery was well developed and there was the right amount of action and suspense. The romance was nice as well but didn't overwhelm the other elements of the plot. I was left wanting to spend more time in this world and find out what happens to these characters.

There's a violent killer on the loose and you're carried along as the story unfolds through the eyes of the main character. The settings are well written and the tension builds as we progress towards the final developments. The magical/paranormal aspects support the story and the sexual developments add a spot of sizzle but without getting tacky or distracting from the story. One of the better paranormal adventure stories I've read so far, it's well written & keeps you engaged the whole way through.

This book is set in a colony of supernaturals, cut off from society and humans in their own dome. Lanore is a mixbreed, with the power of pyrokinesis. When she sees a murder in an alley she sets out to find the perpetrator all the while dealing with vampires and dealing with the competing attentions of two men who love her. I really liked this book, fantastic storyline, sex action, mystery. What more could you want? Can't wait for the next one!

I won this book from Kenya Wright's book giveaway through Library Thing. This was an excellent book. I fell in love with it right away. It reminded me of Anita Blake series before they were all about sex. Don't get me wrong there is sex in this book but it doesn't take up a majority of the story line. I can't wait for the Burning Bush to come out.

Fire Baptized by Kenya Wright was an interesting book. I have not read too many books like this but it was well thought out and well written. I would definitely read follow up books of the same content and series by this author. I would recommend this book to others as well. Even the proof reading was done well with only one or two misses by the proof reader. I received this book from the author for review from the Library Thing Early Reviewers of which I am a member.

Fire Baptized was given to me by the author Kenya Wright. Lanore, a Mixbreed or "Mixie" (she’s part Fairy and part Demon) is marked with a silver X brand on her forehead. This is how all of the supernaturals are identified by the humans that keep them locked behind caged cities called The Habitat. The marks of the supernaturals are: a full moon for Vampires, a crescent moon for Shifters, a pair of wings for Fairies ect....Lanore has the ability to create fire which she does not reveal except under extreme emergencies. Lanore just wants to finish college to provide herself with a better life. She has always stolen the thing that she needs. One night on her way home she sees a lady being tortured, murdered and then cut up into little bitty pieces. The killer knows that Lanore witnessed the murder and starts leaving notes for her.Lanore enlist the help of her boyfriend, Zulu a mixbreed and ex-boyfriend/roommate, Meshack a Were-cheetah to help find the killer before she is the murderer's next victim. Zulu and Meshack both care about Lanore very much and only want her to be happy. They will do anything that they have to to keep her safe. Lanore is a very strong and independent person she doesn't need and especially dosen't want any one to fight her battles for her. She can and will fight for herself.Zulu is the leader of the Mixed Breed Rights Movement. As the leader Zulu fights for the rights of the Mixie's to have equal rights and the same justice as all the purebloods have in The Habitat. The Mixies are second class citizens. They are not allowed to sit up front when in a club, they are made to sit in the back and are not allowed to use the bathrooms.I really, really loved Fire Baptized. I loved that it had a new twist on all the different supernaturnals like Vampires, Shifters, Fairies, Witches etc... It kept me on the edge of my seat all the way to the end before the murder was revealed. If you love the parnormal, supernaturals and urban fantasy then I would suggest that you run don't walk to the store right now to pick up a copy. You will not be disappointed.

Really well written! This book combines the best of paranormal and murder mystery, with some romance thrown in! Kenya Wright has created a good, strong female character and a good cast of supporting characters. The story moves at a good pace. It is good as a stand-alone story, but it sets the tone for a good series.

"Fire Baptized" by Kenya Wright was a good mystery, romance, paranormal and fantasy thriller...even a little comedy .... all in one good read. This novel is definitely one that is hard to put down once you start reading. The setting is in Miami surrounded by a military base that take you straight into loads of action that is kept going constantly until the end. Being a Mixedblood (half Fairy) creature Lanore Vesta(LaLa) could absorb and throw fire and was looked down on by those of the Pureblood. Lanore is confronted with a killer on a rainy night on the way home and her life takes many twist and turns as she tries to solve the killings that is going on in the Supernatural District. A note is left on Lanore door. Who had killed Carmen and Candy? Would Lanore head up an investigation? Lanore was definitely the Heroine who was one tough character. You will only have to pick up this novel and see for yourself. Between Lanore's childhood friend and roomate MeShack (ex-Lover) and ZuZu who was a sexy radical friend... for they both were kinds of heros in this story. They were indeed strong, charming, very sexy, had special gifts and both really cared for Lanore.. for they would even die for her. Now just who would Lanore choose? Was this a love triangle? With the war that was going on between these races this story from the start to the finish was full of some real unforgettable characters....Lanore, MeShack, ZuZu, Ray, Carmen, Larry, Roxy, Candy, Detective Rivera, Star, Pike, Iron Dove, Goldie, Gabe, Benji, Miss Vesta, Dante, Nona, Quinn, Wendy, and Angel ..... the list goes on presenting Fairies, Pixies, Shifters, Supes, Vamps, Mixies and Werewolfs and more. All were really a very interesting bunch of characters! Be ready for an interesting good read. The author uses a lots of imagination in presenting this story. The details were off the chart in many ways. There was much research done by the author to bring this story to us. For the plot was well developed and this was one that I was unable to figure out until the end just who was this murderer was. Good job! It was very interesting seeing Lanore figure things out and ultimately save the day. "Fire Baptized" was defintely an adult novel due to some of its themes and graphic scenes sex, volence and language ... but...still a good read. I also thought the Book Cover was interesting to look at! (those flames)... If you are into the supernatural this read would be for you.

For decades, supernatural beings - vampires, fairies, werewolves, etc. - have been forced to live in walled-off areas, separate from normal humans. Lanore is a mixed-blood, shunned even by the other supernaturals. When she witnesses a grisly murder, Lanore takes it upon herself to solve the case before she becomes the next victim. Meanwhile, Lanore’s were-cheetah roommate MeShack and mixie revolutionary Zulu are both rather violently attempting to claim her as their own. (Seriously, it’s like neither of them can show desire without tearing her clothes.) Though supernatural beings are all the rage in YA fiction at the moment, Fire Baptized is unquestionably for adults. It’s quite graphic in terms of both violence and sex. Still, it’s a good read. Lanore is smart and interesting, and while I wasn’t too impressed with her choices in male companionship, I still enjoyed watching her figure things out and, ultimately, save the day. The world itself is pretty cool as well, with each person’s supernatural status branded on the forehead and the changes to human history their existence has manifested. I don’t know that I’d go out of my way to read the rest of the Habitat series, but this first installment certainly was quite the adventure.

I really enjoyed Fire Baptized, a new book by Kenya Wright. The book's setting is the United States in the future, where vampires, shape-shifters, fairies, and all other non-human beings are forced to live in a caged city called Habitat. Our heroine is Lenore, a "mixed breed" (fairy/demon) whose gift is the ability to generate fire from her body and direct its path. Fire Baptized is in the urban fantasy, paranormal genre but at heart, it's a detective novel. Walking home from a college class, Lenore stumbles upon a murder in progress. She escapes harm, but the killer knows where she lives. Lenore's not one to back down from a threat. She can't resist finding the identity of the killer, even as the body count mounts and danger tightens around her. Fire Baptized is good for so many different reasons, so pardon me now because I'm about to rave about it. Kenya Wright has an amazing talent for description. I could see what she was describing in my mind's eye as I read the words. For example, describing Lenore's were-cheetah roommate, MeShack: "Drops of sweat clung to the rows of muscle on his stomach. His skin glowed like honey poured over caramel". MeShack is one of two strong male characters who make Fire Baptized a sexy read. Descriptions are sensual, as well as visual. The book is hot, cold, wet; there's velvet, silk, leather, fur, and terry cloth. And aromatic, filled with scents that are seductive, enticing, or revolting. Many of the components of Habitat life are like ours to an amusing degree, such as cheerily insane TV commercials and a heavily merchandised cartoon super hero named Captain Habitat. However, the injustices of Habitat existence, which mirror US history, give depth and meaning to the storyline. Lenore is determined to help flatten these slanted legalities and win for herself and others the right to leave Habitat to live freely wherever they choose. It is this sense of justice that compels her to stop the killer. Fire Baptized wins 4 stars from me. Well done!

Kenya Wright's debut novel is a refreshing breath of air that will suck you into Lanore's world with each turn of the page. Lanore Vesta is a Mixie or a Mixbreed. She lives in the shady part of town with her childhood best friend and survives each day by avoiding the Pureblood who detest the the existence of mixed Supernaturals. Her days of laying low come to an end when she witnesses the murder right in her neighborhood. I loved the creativity and originality of this book! Wright creates a complex world full of social inequality, conflict and jargon. In a world where Mixbreeds are considered second class citizens (with their own bathrooms and everything) Lanore is one of the faces of a group that fights for Mixie rights. The thought of a killer targeting Lanore is thrilling enough (and gruesome!), but the complex and detailed world make this book memorable. The characters are all strong, independent and fabulous creations. I totally fell in love with the Bad-Boy-But-Big-Softy MeShack. Lanore is a great heroine who knows when to fight battles and when to back down. She is strong, loyal to her friends, a fighter for Mixbreed rights and she can set people on fire, what's not to love? Kenya also introduces her audience to a variety of secondary characters who are just as interesting as the front runners. We follow Lanore are she dances her way through vampire galas and we watch her struggle to communicate with Rebel Shifters. There is a SLIGHT love triangle in this book and I am extremely torn about it. While I am not the biggest fan of love triangles, I felt myself really struggling to pick who I wanted to be with Lanore (and I stand by my decision!) and was becoming more and more frantic when Lanore shied away from the path I picked for her. For a debut author, Kenya' writing style is well polished. The story is told from the perspective of Lanore Vesta and Kenya does a great job of making her both likeable and seem very real. Overall, this exciting first installment of the Habitat series is everything a novel should have: a thrilling mystery, a likeable set of characters with a world so vast that I just need to know more. Kenya Wright urban fantasy novel will be an instant favorite for fans of the genre!Recommended for: Fans of the adult paranormal/urban fantasy genre.
