About this ebook

When reading the newspaper, listening to politicians or discussing current events, how can you determine whether the facts and opinions shared are truthful and accurate or misleading and false?

Donald L. Karshner has had a lifelong interest in developing critical thinking skills. Inspired by his granddaughter, who was open to suggestions as she went off to college, Karshner began compiling his advice on honing critical thinking. This book evolved from the few pages he had written for his granddaughter.

Be a Critical Thinker offers a clear process for applying critical thinking skills to scrutinize ideas, facts and interpretations, even when they are inconsistent or contradictory.

By applying the skills of critical thinking, you will be better equipped to clarify your thinking process, to intelligently critique what you read and hear, to correct errors, to dispel misunderstandings and ignorance, and to make a positive contribution to a discussion or debate.

I received 'Be a Critical Thinker: Hone Your Mind to Think Critically' by Donald Karshner in exchange for a honest review. It's a short but that the author covers some topics about critical thinking, such as the purpose, preparing to think critically and how to go about it. The descriptive parts are short and succinct. Examples comes mainly as questions / statements that should come to our minds when we want to think critically. The author realizes that thinking critically is something a person has to develop. While some hints and ideas can be suggested, it's up to a person to develop these skills and can take even years to be good at critical thinking. Still worth the read. It certainly give food for thought and even some basic ideas of how to start.

Significant thought has gone into this concise work. Recent events in the media spring to mind while reading this, where it is clear that a lot of people speak before engaging critical thinking at all. This book not only helps you to spot the flaws in another's argument, more importantly, it makes you think hard about your own.
