About this ebook
These shoes represent a slice of the golden age of business as well, large and small, particularly in the Southeast, that developed after World War II. The discretionary spending created from textiles, tobacco, insurance, furniture and aviation was the fuel for many small businesses centered around design and the arts, as well as the creation of many museums and foundations that nurture arts in our communities long after the businesses and families have faded away.

Alternate Titles:
Dad called me Princess Pretty-Foot
when I was an infant, when he wasn't busy calling me Princess Running-Water,
so that seemed like a catchy title.
Another title springs to mind: The Other Mrs. Marcos.
However, Mother made her own money, so it was her right to do with as she pleased. She didn't have any wasteful tendencies; she just had a great appreciation for good craftsmanship, and one of those manifestations was shoe leather. This is a celebration of what Mother and I believe was the golden age of practical, enticingly subtle, elegant shoes.
Business Class - Mother's Shoes
also evolved. Many women married and returned to hearth and home after WWII. After college, Mother chose to go to work and moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where she enjoyed a lifelong career as a successful interior designer. She had a long marriage to our Dad, Henry, until his death in 2000, and had my brother and me, so she actively participated in both the home world and the work world. At all times, being dressed well was her natural inclination as well as a requirement of the times and her roles.
To Each Her Own...
Keeping in mind that each individual's foot determines what designs and which designers one can wear, within that context each of us is attracted to a particular shoe for what it represents on the outside, if it is comfortable on the inside.
We've all had the instance where we fell in love with the look of a shoe, but couldn't make friends with it standing up. My lost love was by Halston, in saddle
