About this ebook

As seen in Netflix's "Cracked Up: The Darrell Hammond Story", this groundbreaking memoir is a raw look inside the troubled life and mind of an American comic genius.

By turns poignant and hilarious, Hammond takes readers from the set of Saturday Night Live, where he was the show’s longest-tenured cast member, to the drug-ridden streets of Harlem and into the twisting corridors of his own unflaggingly humorous consciousness. Mingling behind-the-scenes stories from television’s best-loved comedy series with a dark look inside a world-class funnyman, God If You’re Not Up There, I’m F*cked is a book sure to resonate with anyone who shares a talent for performance, a love of comedy, or a desire to know how an artist can climb from the deepest despair to the very top of his profession.

Darrell Hammond has lived a rough life. I mean, it seems normal enough on the surface, even for an SNL comedian (see also Phil Hartman, John Belushi, Chris Farley), but there is an underlying darkness that has followed him causing very serious problems for him. That's what this book is about. There were several moments while reading about Hammond's life that made me tear up. Some were during his darkest moments of addiction and depression so deep it led to suicidal tendencies, while others were while he was talking about the deaths of his parents (I lost my mother earlier this year, and it's still fresh). But man, his mother... wow. This one has been sitting in my Goodreads recommendations since I joined the site, I think because Wired and The Chris Farley Show were both on my Read list, so if you're interested in memoirs of well-known figures from film and television, especially those under the "SNL curse" (again; Hartman, Belushi, Farley), add this one to your list. It's enlightening.

Very depressing. Didn't care for the crude language. Hopefully he has straightened himself out now.

Heartbreaking and funny all at once. Great read. Loved it.

I never knew much about Darrell Hammond, though I liked his impressions on SNL. I’m completely torn about this book. It was well-written and I wanted to finish it, but it didn’t pull me in, and even though I’ve read about him, I still don’t feel like I know Darrell Hammond. He keeps the reader at a distance, and seems to have written the book just to have done it, or just to fulfill a book deal, or just to get money while there was interest. Which is fine, but it doesn’t make for an enticing read. His life sounds really interesting, he just doesn’t get into it enough. Instead, there’s a lot of short blips about doing an impression of X on the show, then meeting X. Or being paid to appear as Y at an event. Those are interesting because of the political aspects, but again, he doesn’t delve deep enough. Sometimes he just talks about what sketches were on an episode of SNL, and which ones he was in. To sum it up, I guess I’d say it was a nice “tip of the iceberg” type book - interesting subject matter, but not very involved.<

A cringe worthy read. Not in the sense that it's poorly written, but that his experiences make you physically cringe while reading. I was left questioning whether or not our entertainment industry is built on the backs of really troubled people. Hammond's journey to fame though has to be more traumatic than most I'm sure, but he also offhandedly mentions (without naming names) the fact that he brushed shoulder with some big names at the various rehab clinics he checked/was checked into over the years.

I enjoyed the very casual storytelling style that made it feel less like a dry autobiography and more like a one man show with the actor on stage bearing his heart to you. As someone that grew up in a loving household, it's hard for me to even begin to fathom how horrible it would be to grow up with a mother that despises you and a father that never steps in to stop the abuse.

I would recommend this read to any SNL fan that wants more than just behind the scenes tidbits.

OK, so it's not getting 4 stars for the quality of the prose. Let's just get that out of the way right now.

A book about one of my favorite SNL cast members and his dealing with drugs, alcohol, and psychotic breakdowns? Hellz yeah!

Seriously, though, this was a rather good book. If you don't give 2 shits for Darrell Hammond or SNL or someone's struggles with sobriety while trying to hold onto his sanity, then don't bother with this one. There are definitely better books to read.

Spoiler alert: Darrell Hammond's mom is the true psycho in this story.

And that concludes my weak-ass review.
