I love Poppy and Harry's story!! Another perfect pairing of opposites!!

Harry Rutledge is very compelling and Poppy visibly grows in the book but I thought that both the hero and heroine were second to the fascinating character of the hotel and its interesting staff. Would have liked more on the clockwork hobby, Poppy's eclectic interests and her self-assertion but otherwise a really fun match in the making.

Nice. Very sweet. This family is a little boring, though--or maybe it's just that I read three of Kleypas's romance novels in a row on a flight to New York. Maybe my judgment is off.

Regardless, I so admire how she manages to completely vary the characters who are placed within the same plot pattern template with each novel. The combination here is a bit like my husband and and me--maybe that was the source of my boredom.

The next book is the one I'm really looking forward to.

    My Comments

I really enjoyed this book. It's definitely the best of the series so far. I really liked Harry - I love gruff, angry characters who are just covering up the poor, injured little boy inside, and that's exactly what he is. This book actually brought tears to my eyes at points, and made my heart clench. Most romance novels don't do that. Loved it.

This book was a serious see-saw of a story. It swings wildly from two-star eye rolling moments to five-star bits of brilliant dialog.

The premise itself is solid Kleypas fare.

Poppy Hathaway is in love, and is loved back, but the object of her affection is the heir to a very old and very blue-blooded viscountcy. He's written her a flowery love letter declaring his love for her, but stressing that they must be discreet while he works to bring his father around to the idea of their marrying. Unfortunately, Poppy's sister's ferret has made off with this secret letter, and is running around the halls of the Rutledge hotel with it.

Harry Rutledge collides with Poppy as she chases the ferret down a passageway hidden behind a fireplace (Wealthy - check. Eccentric - check.) After a short acquaintance with her, showing her around his curiosities room where he keeps the automatons he makes along with gifts from around the world (Sophisticated and worldly - check. Intelligence in spades - check.), he decides he simply must have her. He then secretly pockets her love letter, schemes to force this suitor out of the picture, and manages to force her into marriage with him (Questionable morals - check. We've got a Byronic hero here, folks, lest the hamfisted imagery escape you.)

Much of the book, then, deals with Harry and Poppy as a married couple. She discovers his scheming before they marry, so she spends this time trying to reconcile her feelings for the man she likes but resents for betraying her. While she maintains her feelings towards the outmaneuvered suitor, she also acknowledges that he chose not to anger his father by eloping with her, and that Harry did put up the bigger fight. Still, she's not terribly turned on by having been fought over like meat then had her future all but decided for her.

Harry initially tries to win her over by lavishing money and gifts on her. Because of his traumatic upbringing, he is a stranger to love and so treats Poppy like a precious collectible and doesn't understand why it doesn't thaw her out. They bicker, they argue and you can cut the sexual tension with a knife.

The novel's problem is that it relies on a lot of shortcuts, like the Byronic hero template I mention above. We get pretty much all of Harry's tortured past divulged to us in two instances of dialog info dump, one when Cam confronts him over how he trapped Poppy in marriage and then much later when Miss Marks tells her supa sekrit tale of woe. The hotel staff offers marriage counseling with a smile and a wink. They were so underdeveloped that they congealed into a single character, one so cheerful that I expected them to break out in a Disney-esque song and dance number at some point. The secondary characters are fairly one-dimensional and exist only to move the plot or vomit bits of back story.

A kidnapping plot late in the book, where Harry is held against his will and Poppy ostensibly saves him, is downright baffling. I still can't figure out what that was all about. It wasn't to force one or both of them to acknowledge their feelings for each other, as they had just exchanged poignant "I love you" declarations beforehand. It just seemed to delay the end of the book.

All of the shortcuts, convenient plot massaging and relentless series baiting adds up to detract from what should have been the main event. Kleypas seemed to be writing Poppy's story out of duty, when she really wanted to be writing Leo and Miss Marks' story. Harry goes from regarding Poppy as an object to falling desperately in love with her, but we're never really shown why. Additionally, we're told about Harry, who he his and how he got to be that way, but I never felt that I got to see him acting out these traits the other characters assigned him. He's just a cardboard cutout with "brooding Byronic dude" scrawled in sharpie across the front of it.

I did enjoy reading the story Kleypas laid out for me, but I never really got to connect with and feel I knew the characters. There were brilliant bits of conversation or action here and there, but they were bogged down in an awful lot of telling and convenience. Sadly, this is not one of my favorites of hers.

Also, that epilogue was freaking retarded. Dumb ass cliffhangers like that are for soaps and kids' cartoons. Did not like.

I like this book better on second reading. Poppy is a bit different for a heroine, but it's really Harry Rutledge who carries the book. Having been abandoned by his mother and raised by his uncaring father, he's a difficult, selfish man. Ultimately, though, the Hathaways prevail, as they always do.

This was alright, once it got going. The Hathaways are an eccentric family, raised to the ton through a fluke death of a distant relative, and Poppy is the heroine of this one. She's quirky - smart, well-read and too talkative for an unmarried woman to be accepted by the ton.Harry, an American inventor and owner of the hotel where Poppy and her family are staying in London, meets Poppy by chance, and is quickly enchanted by her intelligence, humor and frankness. Through some sneakiness on Harry's part, Poppy's secret intended, a minor member of the nobility, is forced to stop seeing her (and scrap their plans of marriage), and Harry steps in to offer for her. While I practically swooned over Harry's desire for Poppy (and williness to speak of it), I found myself infinitely more interested in the tension and chemistry between Poppy's older brother and Poppy's companion, a mysterious young woman with a secret tie to Harry.Light and romantic, but I'm more interested in the next in the series...

I enjoyed this book very much it was very easy to read.Poppy Hathaway met Harry Rutledge while staying at his hotel and when he met her he was smitten and had to have her. At the time she was hoping to become betrothed to another man but Harry saw to that and asked Poppy to marry him and she did against her families wishes. The Hathaway family is fun to read about and it was good to meet the other members again.

This book is charming, sweet, and a lot of fun.

When chasing her little sisters rebellious ferret around the Rutledge hotel, Poppy Hathaway runs into a dangerous man in a passageway. A quick kiss shakes them both, but Poppy is determined to move on and marry Michael, the son of a Peer. Although Michael is reluctant to tell his father about his wishes to marry a girl from a family less noble than his, Poppy knows if she just waits he'll eventually ask for her.

The intelligent and charisma displayed in the young, beautiful girl rattles Harry Rutledge. After their brief encounter he can't get her out of his mind. Not used to not getting what he wants, Harry will stop at nothing to get Poppy, even if that means breaking her heart.

An unusual, but beautiful story about love, second chances, and realizing what it means to put someone else first. This book is another of Lisa Kleypas's many wonderful novels! Highly recommended for anyone who loves regency romances.

Parts of this book were incredible but it felt very disjointed at times. I loved Poppy and Harry and wish they had more time together outside of "the big conflict". I think this book can grow on me in time... A lot of setup in this book for the next book which always annoys me. I'm really looking forward to Beatrix's book though, her character development in this series has been very strong.

This is the first time in a few years that I've picked up a Lisa Kleypas book, and I'm glad my fondness for her stories remain very strong. I loved following Poppy and Harry's romance. Harry, a cold and manipulative man, has never known love in his life, though he is not incapable of learning. It just takes intelligent and strong-willed Poppy to show him how. Of course, it's not a Hathaway story without the quirks and silliness. And it's not a Kleypas story without her trademark sensuality and tender moments. Wonderful read!

Harry is portrayed wonderfully. The one quibble I have with this book is Poppy, who somehow remained a bit flat. The book is full of humor, amongst others because of various animals. The other Hathaways are of course also present, but in a pleasant way.

Harry Rutledge is a man with a mission. He owns a hotel, among other things, and he is determined that it will be the best hotel. However he is completely absorbed by his work, leaving very little room for anything else until a ferret brings Poppy Hathaway into his life. He proceeds to win her the same way he conducts business, he doesn't know how to deal with people in any other way. It's up to Poppy to teach him how life works and he finds that above all else he wants to please Poppy. There's misunderstandings and complications a-plenty in this one and I did enjoy the story and the characters. Poppy's resentment at his treatment of her was completely understandable and his confusion at having to deal with emotion stuff was well drawn and understandable as his back-story became more known. A pair of characters I would like to see again.

Poppy Hathaway in London for her season is staying at the Rutledge Hotel with her family and is in pursuit of Beatrix's pet ferret when he scoots into a secret passage and traps them in the darkness where she meets a stranger. Thinking he's part of the staff she talks to him and begs him to keep this a secret. He's charmed by her and of course it turns out to be Harry Rutledge. The gentlemen who is courting Poppy but hasn't yet asked for her hand because his father won't approve is maneuvered out giving Harry the opportunity to court and marry her. The marriage gets off to a very rocky start before Poppy figures out to handle married life.

I'd heard before reading this that many were disappointed with this book. I think I can see why it didn't measure up to some of her others, but I thought it was pretty well done.

I liked Harry. There's something very compelling about him. He he wants Poppy more than anything else in the world and makes no apologies for his methods in getting her. I liked the way his mind worked and the way he took care of so many but kept them at a distance, with the exception of Poppy.

To be honest I don't remember much about Poppy from the previous books, so I didn't go into this with any preconceived notions of her. In the end I found her to be fun and refreshing. She was just what Harry needed. The two of them together were spectacular.

I thought the way their relationship played out was done well. Their marriage started under less than perfect circumstances and I'm glad LK used the entire length of the book to address them.

I was disappointed in what happened at the very end of the book. It seemed unnecessary and even a bit silly. Otherwise I really enjoyed it.

Now if only she'd give us Leo's book!

An enjoyable addition to the series and while Harry and Poppy are an endearing couple, it is the scenes between Leo and Cat that really engaged me.

Harry is a difficult character to like. He is ruthless and manipulative but also uncompromising in his honesty and forthrightness. At some point, it becomes impossible not to sympathize with him given his tortured past and tireless efforts to love and be loved. While his behavior with regard to Poppy's beau is unconscionable, one cannot help but accept that Michael is weak and spineless, and that Poppy is better off without him. Moreover, Harry's willingness to accept her for who she is and do anything to keep her is very compelling.

Poppy is a sweet heroine but is somewhat bland as compared to the other Hathaway siblings. Nevertheless, she is intelligent and charming, and her relationship with the Rutledge hotel staff is lovely, They are wonderful secondary characters and their matchmaking efforts are one of the highlights of the story.

Harry and Poppy's tug-of-war romance is entertaining and although they have definite chemistry, it is not as tangible as that of Win and Kev in Seduce Me at Sunrise.

The small suspense plot is somewhat contrived although it does add to solidifying the romance between Harry and Poppy.

The setup for Cat and Leo's book is fantastic and their scenes together are so irresistible that I'm going to read the next book immediately rather than waiting between installments as I usually do.

We all know and are attracted (even if we don't admit it) to that villain of a man, the seemingly cold-hearted, manipulative hunk who, underneath the layers of bravado, just wants and needs to be held, to be wanted, to be loved. Harry Rutledge is such a man in the third installment of the Hathaways series, TEMPT ME AT TWILIGHT.Harry is the reclusive, handsome, American born owner of the prestigious London hotel, The Rutledge. He is a self-made man and one of the richest in London as well as one of the most mysterious, hence his instantanious attractiveness to all women. He is notorious for his shrewd business sense, his manipulative nature and ruthless determination to get whatever he wants. And what he wants...... is Poppy Hathaway. Poppy is beautiful, intelligent, with a love for life that is engrossing. She wants a normal, predictable, peaceful life, which, of coarse, does not happen when your last name is Hathaway. Staying at the Rutledge Hotel during the season, Poppy believes she has found her true love in Michael Bayning, a young man secretly courting her, witholding a proposal due to his fears that his father will not approve of the match. But if a man truly loves a woman, nothing would stop him from having her. As Harry tells Poppy,"You were courted by a boy, who had to do as he was told." His hot breath feathered against her lips as he whispered, "You should try it with a man, who needs no one's permission."Nothing will stop Harry from getting what he wants, especially not a young buck like Michael Bayning. A little bit of manipulation and maneuvering, and Harry has Poppy where he wants her....in a very uncompromising position that could ruin her reputation forever. But what will happen when Poppy discovers that she is married to the villain, a man who manipulates people with his power and money.....a man who doesn't tell her the whole truth. As the story progresses, Poppy comes to accept Harry for who he is, and in doing so, offers him the love he so desperately wanted and needed his whole life. Harry finally comes to realize and accept that he is deserving of love and that he is capable of loving. Little did he know that Poppy was the woman he was waiting for his whole life, the one who would make him laugh, intrigue him, beguile him, adore him....the one who would unleash in him a profound love that he could no longer contain.“I have so much love for you, I could fill rooms with it. Buildings. You’re surrounded by it wherever you go, you walk through it, breathe it...it’s in your lungs, and under your tongue, and between your fingers and toes...” His mouth moved passionately over hers, urging her lips apart. It was a kiss to level mountains and shake stars from the sky. It was a kiss to make angels faint and demons weep...a passionate, demanding, soul-searing kiss that nearly knocked the earth off its axis. Or at least that was how Poppy felt about it. "This is another great Lisa Kleypas story. It has it all.... villainous hero, lovable heroine, hot and heavy love scenes, humourous dialogue, and charming secondary characters. I have loved this quirky Hathaway family from the beginning in MINE TILL MIDNIGHT. The author keeps us laughing with the return of the familiar, unconventional family members whom I have come to know and love so well. The author's revelations about Catherine and the obvious growing attraction between her and Leo is enough to make me run to the nearest book store. Thank god for the internet and ebooks.....with the push of a button, I am already engrossed in the next Hathaway love affair.

London, 1852 Three seasons and still the only prospect of marriage for Poppy Hathaway was a man (Mr. Michael Bayning)who had still not told his father that he wanted to court her. The love letters between the two of them promised marriage, but shortly after being kissed by Mr. Harry Rutledge, the elusive owner of the Rutledge hotel, she was informed that there was no way Michael’s father would ever consent to their being wed. Knowing what he wanted and then getting it was a regular task for Harry and this would be no different. There was something about Poppy, who had stumbled upon one of his secret passageways and then had shown interest in his private collection. He had to have her as his wife, no matter how he had to get her.Book 3 … Lisa Kleypas has a grasp on historicals that leaves even the most mundane of characters one that you want to watch for again and again. I really enjoyed the inclusion of all the other Hathaways (and husbands). I was not sure about how much I would like Poppy’s story but Harry was a fabulous character and made it easy to like it. While definitely not my favorite Hathaway, Harry is the best villain I have seen in a long time. I also really enjoyed the Catherine Marks parts of the story and am eager to hear more of her story and to see how Lisa Kleypas can give young Beatrix something more than just her critters.

This is the third book in the Hathaway series. Like the other two I really enjoyed this one. This one focuses on Poppy, the third sister. I loved getting to know Poppy better. She’s intelligent, witty, and charming. It’s not hard to see why Harry would be so attracted to her.

Again, the Hathaways provide some wonderfully funny interactions and I found myself chuckling out loud on certain parts. I especially enjoy the dialogue between Leo and Marks or Catherine, which is her real name. I can’t wait to read more on their romance. I’m dying to read the next one because this one ends on a slight cliffhanger.

This third installment in the Hathaway series is slightly different from the other two books, because for the heroine, Poppy, it’s not love at first, second, or third sight. In the beginning of the story she’s quite smitten with a man that is not the hero, but the bastard can’t commit with her because his father does not approve the match, and soon she finds herself in the arms of the mysterious Harry Rutledge, who wants her as he never wanted anything else in life.At first Harry can seem the villain in the story, but I certainly never saw him that way, because he wanted Poppy, end of story. While Michael wanted Poppy BUT what to do about her embarrassing family…his father…his precious title and money, and oh God, what will others think and say if he elopes with the love of his life?! Ugh, seriously, dude. So, hell yes, I wanted Poppy with Harry.Nevertheless, those first weeks as newlyweds were not easy for both of them, or for me to read, with them being so awkward around each other. The second half of the book is a lot better because we get to know Harry, his past, and how his mommy issues make him think he’s completely unlovable -- which broke my heart. Poppy was just the right woman to prove him wrong, and I love the way she patiently handled him and forgave his initial *kind of* villainous conduct. In Tempt Me At Twilight we also get to know more about Miss Marks, and I must say, I love that this series is mostly about romance and tortured heroes, but also about long lost brothers, sisters, and other family members, getting reacquainted. Love it. :)On a side note, here goes a shout out to the secondary characters who gained a place in my heart: the hotel staff, who tried so hard to make Harry and Poppy sleep in the same room; Dodger, the ferret; and Medusa, the hedgehog!

I've read her Wallflowers and Ravenels series and this book is one of the best out of all of them, (though on average I think The Ravenels collectively are her best yet). This was well written and very engaging. The flaws of the characters and the hurdles they face are all buyable. The plot outline is a bit misleading, his 'dangerous hidden life' and 'an enemy lurking in the shadows' are really a very minor part of the story, go ahead and ignore those. Overall a very fun read.

I love Poppy and Harry’s story here, although I took off half a star from my original reading because there are some things that didn’t get resolved; it’s still an HEA, but it kinda flows straight into Leo and Catherine’s story. The Hathaways are such a wonderful and unconventional family, and I love that we really see it more here in London, although I adore their family time together in Hampshire.

MY REVIEWSummary:Poppy Hathaway is the only one of her family that craves a life of normalacy, to not have big adventures, since her life with her family is filled with one adventure after another. Poppy is in the latter part of the season and at the Rutledge hotel where they are staying, on a race for a ferret, and stumbles in a secret passageway she finds herself in Harry Rutledge’s arms and dazzled by his sensational kisses, Harry who is a temptation in and of itself to Poppy. Harry Rutledge wants Poppy and will do anything he can to get her. So when they are caught in a compromising position, which forced Poppy to marry the one man that has manipulated everything to this point. Even though she doesn’t trust him, and is reluctant to marry, she knows that if she doesn’t her life will be ruined. So she marries him, not exactly knowing what to expect out of Harry Rutledge, however she never realized that even though things started a bit rocky, their union would be filled with passion, love and trust. The Hero Harry Rutledge never had the respect or love from his father growing up in New York City, America, so he has never been loved or been able to reach other to love someone else. Harry is very successful in London, and very smart with science and has even helped the Government with some inventions. Then he stumbles across Poppy Hathaway the most sensible of them all, and he finds her fascinating with her beautiful smile and her smart conversations, he is intrigued by her, and after their kiss he vows that he must have her, he just never expected such a delightful package that would teach him about love and happiness. The HeroinePoppy Hathaway is the Fourth of the Hathaways, and the most sensible. Her family is always filled with near catastrophes, accidents all around, animals everywhere she goes, and life full of adventure. But what she craves is peace and quiet in the country. Poppy is very intellectual and loves to converse with people on those topics, however since she has entered society she must converse in boring conversating except when she is with Harry, who seems intrigued by her. But when she is forced to marry the scoundrel that manipulated the events, she is reluctant to every trust him, but starts to see that he needs love and affection more than anyone, because he has never felt it.My Thoughts:This is my Third time reading Tempt Me At Twilight, and I just love this one, and one of my favorites written by this author and it is my favorite book of this series. I just have always loved Poppy, and I also love Harry, he is the kind of male heros that I love to read about in love stories. The kind that is so Alpha and wants to take control of everything, but what he needs more is a fiery female who will show him love and tenderness and Poppy surely does this, and we see a change in Harry throughout the story. Tempt Me At Twilight is a tender romance that will definitely make you fall in love all over again, a delightful love story!!!
