    INTRODUCTION

Ignorance is lethal and knowledge is a lifesaver.

This holds true for people who have lost loved ones to diseases they knew very little or nothing about. Being a victim myself, I know how valuable even a little piece of information can be.

Let me tell you more about it.

In recent decades, reports on dengue epidemic were so alarming that national governments in various Asian countries warned their people to watch out for the Tiger mosquitoes, the primary carrier of the dengue virus. These are the ones with striped feet. Dengue virus originated from Asian countries such as the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and China. However, there were also confirmed cases in Western countries like Mexico, Brazil, and even the United States. For instance, there had been a dengue epidemic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1780. In October of 2012, Puerto Rico declared a dengue epidemic as well. Six people died and more than 4,000 patients, mostly children, were infected.

I have my own share of loss as well.

Ten years ago, my younger sister, the third child in the family (I come second), acquired dengue fever, which forced her to leave school for two weeks. It affected her grades but she recovered because of the immediate detection and confinement.

A year later, our youngest sibling, the fourth child, caught the virus, too, but it took us about a week to realize that it was more than just an ordinary fever.

One morning, she went to school as usual and arrived home happy and active. Later in the afternoon, she was burning with fever that lasted a couple of days more. Because our previous encounter with dengue did not prove to be traumatic, our option was to wait for her to get well. On her last day at home, her temperature hit 40° Celsius and she became unresponsive. My mother then rushed her to one of the most reputable hospitals outside the city where she was placed in the ICU. It was just the beginning of an unforgettable one week of our lives.

Ironically, despite being put in the Intensive Care Unit, my sister’s condition did not get any better. In fact, it worsened. It came to a point where she was vomiting and defecating blood due to internal hemorrhage. Doctors refused to give her any fluids
