20 years ago you never heard of the Internet. Today, it is everywhere. Yet, despite all the sensational developments in audio, video, and social media, it remains rooted in a primitive set of instructions concocted in 1991. This set is Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML.

When you use a browser to display a web page, it reads a file containing a linear sequence of characters, most of which is passed unchanged. Hidden in the original sequence, however, there are instructions which tell the browser how to format text, display images, link to other pages, and so on. These instructions are called tags. This
