20 years ago you never heard of the Internet. Today, it is everywhere. Yet, despite all the sensational developments in audio, video, and social media, it remains rooted in a primitive set of instructions concocted in 1991. This set is Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML.
When you use a browser to display a web page, it reads a file containing a linear sequence of characters, most of which is passed unchanged.
