30 years in my trade and I have had the pleasure of meeting so many lovely people. As a man of strong principles, I soon decided to work for myself. I’m an experienced and skilled kitchen fitter, thriving on completely satisfied customers. However, nothing annoys me more than trivial complaints when there are so many in the world with so little! As an optimist in life, I always try to focus on what I have, not what I don’t; always trying to see the good in others and aspiring to help others whenever I can. Who knows what I’ll do next!

A Song of Service
If all my pain and all my tears,
And all that I have learned
Throughout the years
Could make one perfect song
To lift some fallen head
To light some darkened mind,
I should feel that not in vain
I served mankind.

Introduction
What is it you most want out of life right now? Is there something you secretly wish for, or dream of, that would change your life? What would it take to elevate your lifestyle and lift your spirits? Would you like to be rich?
Well, this book has promised to show you that you are already rich. OK, I'm down under in Australia and I can hear you from here. Some of you are laughing and some are gnashing your teeth! But bear with me a while and I'll show that you have what I've promised you: riches beyond your dreams, treasure beyond your imaginings.
Please be patient and you will be rewarded. I know that, for many, things may not look so rosy just now, but I agree with actor Peter Sellers, who said this: Let us learn to appreciate there will be times when the trees will be bare, and look forward to the time when we may pick the fruit.
Sellers went through plenty of lean times, but riches came, and came in more ways than one. They will come for you, just from reading this book.
There are, of course, many kinds of riches, as we shall see.
I know you probably think that someone like Warren Buffet or Bill Gates is the world's richest man, but I'll tell you what I believe. I believe that I am the richest man in the world, and I'll tell you why in this book.
Furthermore, I've made it my mission to not only share my wealth with you, but to show you how you are already rich. Benjamin Disraeli said the greatest good you can do for others is not just to share your riches, but to reveal to them their own. I agree.
When you finish reading You Are Already Rich, you'll want to go back and read it again for the treasure that has been exposed. This is because you may not see it all at first, though it will come to you in time, and with it will come treasure I haven't even thought of. You will see riches that I do not.
Seeing with the heart
Famed French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said it is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. When I first heard this concept of seeing with the heart, I was stopped in my tracks with the beauty and simplicity of it. As the great Russian writer and master of the human psyche, Fyodor Dostoevsky, said: Only the heart knows how to find what is precious.
I laughed once, long ago, when a work colleague called me the Philosopher of the Everyday. I laughed because I was a little uncomfortable and didn't really know what he meant. I assumed that he was having a bit of fun at my expense. More than a quarter of a century later, as I was writing this book, I remembered the incident and thought, well, a philosopher is one who loves wisdom, and I certainly love seeking the wisdom of the ages. And the everyday
part keeps my feet on the ground, so perhaps my old friend had something.
To be a philosopher,
said Henry David Thoreau, is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school, but to so love wisdom as to live, according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust.
I think you and I can manage that, don't you?
Prolific author Deepak Chopra tells a story his mother used to tell him when he was young. She spoke of a goddess of wisdom and a goddess of wealth.
If you chase the goddess of wisdom,
she said, the goddess of wealth will become jealous and chase you.
It seems that Chopra has been seeking the goddess of wisdom ever since, and the goddess of wealth has certainly found him. We might do well to follow his lead.
A wonderful world
The leader of India after the separation from Pakistan was Jawaharlal Nehru. This was a man who saw more hardship and bloodshed than most of us ever will, yet his view of the world was not altogether bleak.
"We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty,
