ABOUT THE AUTHOR
INTRODUCTION
Malaysia is a diverse land with varied cultures, languages and religions. It blends modern, urbanized lifestyles and traditional, rural ways of life. It has a multiracial and multicultural society made up of Malays, Chinese, Indians and numerous indigenous peoples, all living today in a relatively harmonious ethnic environment.
Geographically, the country is made up of two separate land masses — West Malaysia, or The Peninsula, and East Malaysia. The country has eleven states that occupy the southern-most third of the Malay Peninsula and are known as Peninsular Malaysia. Two states — Sarawak and Sabah — make up East Malaysia, which lies across the South China Sea on the island of Borneo. Although most of Borneo is Indonesian territory, Malaysian Sarawak and Sabah occupy the north and northwest portions of the island.
Malaysia has a strategic location between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Its peninsular location halfway along the sea route between India and China early on brought it into frequent contact with foreign traders. Over the centuries, Chinese and Indian merchants settled in the area, bringing their cultures with them.

Some social scientists feel that the government has put an overemphasis on economic development at the expense of other aspects of society. Land and housing prices, for example, have shot up, putting homes out of the reach of poorer Malaysians, and wooden and aluminum-roofed squatter shacks have sprung up close to industrial zones.
Others, however, point out that the country’s economic
