    Chapter 1

The late July sun beat down on the Texas planes with angry heat. Sweat had long since soaked the back of former First Sergeant Nathaniel Porter’s white shirt and his unruly blond hair hung in damp clumps but he was pounding nails into the new barn paneling just as enthusiastically as he had been a few hours ago.

Tad, Zander and Ned offered to stay on as ranch hands at Hoppin’ Barrel. They needed a fresh start just as much as Nate. His rival was out of the way but it didn’t change the fact that the real work lay looming ahead. Nate was, in short, completely broke. He and his wife had used most of their money on the buildings. What little remained had been used by Elaine to support herself while Nate had been away at war.

And so the threat of losing Hoppin’ Barrel was still very real. Nate knew that it was only a matter of time before the banks would call in his massive mortgage debt. If
