    thankam rents out her annexe to a brother and sister, but soon, she is involved in a torrid love affair with her tenant, mohan, who is almost too beautiful for a man. nothing in her calm and secure marriage to unni had prepared her for this roller-coaster ride. how will the gossip-ridden community in cochin react?
    Will her children abandon her? Her feisty daughter, Manju, is caught in the classic remittance wife scenario, so common in Kerala – plenty of money but no husband as he is working in Dubai. She soon realises her husband, Gopi, has an unhealthy relationship with their driver, Mani, who struts and swaggers around her house when Gopi is on leave. What is the nature of that connection?
    Manju complicates her life further by falling in love with an Englishman she works with. She considers going away with him, but will she lose her children?
    Thankam’s struggle to determine her own life and keep her children safe, is set against the background of bouncing Kochi, with its brooding backwaters.

    Born in a little coastal town, Thalassery, in Kerala, Anand Nair is a Mathematics teacher by profession. She has worked in England as a teacher and in many countries in Africa as a Mathematics adviser for the British Council. However her first love is the English language. She is a keen gardener and cat-lover. She lives in Surrey England with her family of three children, a grandaughter and three cats. She has just completed her second novel, Shards of Sunlght, which will be published in 2013.
