Even with this being such a dark story, I really liked it a lot. Ember is surrounded by death. There is too much and not enough happening in Ember's life, especially normal teenage things. Ember cannot touch anyone without seeing a death omen, how the person dies. That means not dating and not getting close to anyone, it's hard enough with her best friend Raven. Ember was overjoyed when Asher enters her life and she was able to touch him without seeing a death omen. No one wants to be Ember's friend and no boys ever looked her way and all of a sudden comes Asher and Cameron noticing her and not caring that everyone thinks she's weird and the rumors about her. And then she finds out there's more to her ability or curse as she refers to it, as if things weren't bad enough in her life.

This book was filled with a lot of death and dying. It definitely has a more mature young adult theme. Ember lives a difficult life in her town, most of the people don't like her or are afraid of her and even the cops keep a eye on her since she crossed paths with them at a very early age. But through all this Ember remains stoic and strong. Ember can surely take care of herself but living a lonely existence is still difficult and dealing with her best friend's sometimes double personality.

It was really interesting to follow Ember's story and how the author shows her inner turmoil of how she dealt with the difficulties in her life. This was a well written book and I enjoyed it immensely.

Ember X is a new adult version of young adult paranormal novel Ember by Jessica Sorensen. Ember, our narrator, has an unorthodox ability. Whenever she touches or is touched someone, Ember has a death omen: premonition how and when that person is going to die. Tortured by these painful and horrific visions (since in her town obviously no one never dies peacefully or from old age) Ember shuns away from human contact. With dead father, alcoholic mother and crazy-artistic brother, Ember's only confidant is her best friend who is outgoing, slutty, questionably loyal and party-loving'.To make it a little bit more cliche (like this was not enough) enters a romance part of a story. Of course it's a love triangle and it has something for everyone's taste: one blond and one dark hot guy both new to town and both attracted to our heroine. There will be a lot of smoldering glances and Ember's insides will be 'curving and cultivating with so much sweltering heat'. I personally could not feel any heat, but maybe it's better, that thing that happens to her insides does not sound comfortable. But Ember obviously liked it, because she sometimes nearly has an orgasm just from heated glares exchange.Ember was tough heroine to relate to. She was usually mopping around either because of her love dilemma, family problems or because she can not deal with her ability. With constant complains and dramatic self-pity through the whole book, Ember sounded more like a teenager/young adult then like a grown up. Although adding more sexual content pushed Ember X into new adult genre, the psychology of characters needed more change and work too, because some behaviour that can be tolerated for ya book feels out of place and immature in novel targeted for older audience. The one part of Ember X I liked was the (surprise surprise) paranormal part. The lore about angels and grim reapers that Jessica Sorensen made up was interesting and we got introduced to the whole history gradually. Ember X is easy to read because proverbial carrot on a stick, aka new info about something, is always dangling just a little bit out of reach, so you trod along hoping to catch it and finally figure out what is really happening. As always, since this is a series, a some things are left unanswered for the sequel but I think we had good back story for the start.Although I liked the paranormal elements of the story, the characters were too immature and dramatic, so I doubt that I will be continuing Death Collectors series. Fans of ya paranormal books who want to increase the heat to new adult level and who like angels, love triangles and tortured heroines will probably like Ember X by Jessica Sorensen but I recommend that you check an excerpt either via Amazon or some other website before buying. Or grab a Kindle ebook while it is still free. ;)

Jessica Sorensen never disappoints with a book! I know as soon as I pick it up I am going to love it!
Ember X was no exception! I had to finish this one before I could go to bed! I was up until 1 a.m. !

Ember isn't your typical girl, she avoids touching anyone if she can. Because when she does she is instantly hit with how the person will die. The only way she can escape it is to avoid contact.

But then she meets Asher, and when he finally does touch her, all she feels is calm. No death omen flashing in her head. She is instantly drawn to him. Needing the physical contact she has shied away from.
Of course things aren't going to be easy; people start dying in her town. With the police questioning her. Throw in another hot new guy who also stops the death omens with his touch. A semi insane best friend and for real crazy family.

This is a must read! I like Ms. Sorensen's twist on paranormal subjects! I am looking forward to reading the next book.
The only disappointment I feel when reading one of Jessica Sorensen's books is knowing that I will have to wait forever for the follow-up! But they are worth it!

While not perfect (note the occasional typo), there are some books that have just got "it." Know what I mean? That unexplained something that draws readers in. This one definitely had a life of its own.The characters were easy to relate with, the story world believable, and the conflict was ominous with just a hint of it appearing at a time. Ember (the MC) was constantly overwhelmed with her predicament, which twisted gratifyingly until the very end. I guess there are two versions of this book, the YA version, and the X rated version. This one (YA) was very much rated PG-13 (by TV standards), and I would not feel comfortable with a younger audience reading it. Expect some blood, some (but limited) language, and steamy situations. Readers who enjoyed Hush Hush (Becca Fitzpatrick) and Fallen (Lauren Kate) will enjoy this read.

"In separate fields of black feathers, the birds fly.Four wings, two hearts, but only one soul. They connect in the middle, but are separated by a thin line of ash."—CameronThe first thing that had drew me to this book was actually the cover. It was pretty, and conveyed the book's theme quite well. When I came across it on Goodreads, I knew that I have to give it a try. And now I'm glad I did.Ember told us about a not-so-ordinary life of a girl named Ember who lived in a small city in United States. Having a strange ability to sense people's death, she was viewed as a freak and weirdo by the society. Things gone bad, if not worse, when Ember's father died and vanished mysteriously, and she was the sole suspect to the case. But years later, when three strangers from New York moved out to her small town, things began to stir up once again, and Ember must found out who was behind all of it when the strange murder identical to her father's was brewing around . . . again.I found the plot of this book was quite interesting. It was fast-paced, while still gave the readers time to understand what exactly was going on. It was also intriguing, and Jessica had done a marvelous job at keeping us curious and excited about what was going to happen next by dropping a hint here and there. And yes, this book kept me guessing until the last pages where everything was revealed. The character was actually quite flat at first, except for some case. But as the story progressed they showed a remarkable change and began to have a certain uniqueness.Ember Rose Edwards as our main character was easy to remember. She stood out from the rest of the cast, and I love how she was able to stay strong alone and secluding herself from the rest of the world. Sure, it may sounds gloomy, but I like how she stood for her belief, and wasn't swayed by another people's perception.Asher Morgan, as Ember counterpart, was what I called flat at first exactly. He was not unique at all the first time he made an appearance, but later he actually showed a nice and remarkable side of him.One character I found quite interesting was Raven, Ember best friend, and also the tools that the antagonist had use to get his way to Ember. She was sparkly, bold, and all bossy and strong. But in some parts, we got a glimpse of how she actually was : fragile and broken. It was also interesting to read about her when she was possessed, how she would shift from a cheerful-and-all-sun to a gloomy-and-oh-so-depressed mood. One thing I'm not quite fond of this book was how Ember showed a switching, inconstant personality sometimes. Like, she could be all goody next door type of girl, but changed into a hot and passionate girl at another time.Overall, I love this book, and it was totally a refreshing read about angel and grim reaper and death, unlike any other book that I've read. If you love urban-fantasy book, or a book that will keep you guessing until its last page, you should totally try this one.

Ember by Jessica Sorensen is a true breath of fresh air. Not only is this book one of a kind, but it had me guessing until the very last page and let me tell you, that's a hard thing to accomplish. Ember is tired. Tired of seeing how everyone will die, tired of being alone, and tired of being death's constant companion. Things are about to get much worse with the arrival of two new guys to her small town. One is bright and shining and the other is dark and enigmatic. Both men want her, but what for? With talk of Grim Reapers and Angels of Death nothing will ever be the same for Ember again. Throughout the whole book readers are drawn to Ember and the insane agony that is her life. The poor girl literally lives with death and where she goes it follows. Her whole life seems to be one catastrophe after another from seeing things when she was young, to being blamed for deaths and disappearances. Despite this she isn't a girl that gives up. You can't help but go through the book hoping that something good will finally happen to her. Ember's best friend Rave is the perfect foil. Bubbly, care free, and living for the next party she keeps Ember together, but readers get a sense that in the end she might be Ember's downfall. The arrival of Cameron and Asher had me hoping that Ember just might get a happily ever after, too bad they brought nothing but mystery and trouble. I couldn't tell who I liked the best or what "team" I'm on. Each character has their own little story that adds to the overall depth of the book. They build a world of death and secrets that readers will get lost in. This is a dark and bleak book where you don't just fall in love with the characters, but the story as a whole. Speaking of the story as a whole... it was amazing. With the recent popularity of YA books it is hard to find one that is truly original. Jessica Sorensen is an author that has. I have never read a book that combines these particular "creatures" in quite this way. What a combination they make! I definitely will be getting the second book. I give this book a 4 1/2 STAR rating. *** I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't know too much about this book going in to it. The blurb does not give much detail other than a young girl who can 'see' death when she touches you. That, in itself, was enough to peek my interest and the story was enough to hold it throughout the book.Ember takes her first life at the age of four, albeit unwittingly. From that point on death becomes a constant in her life. She can see each persons death every time she touches them and she is visited regularly by the Grim Reaper himself, a faithful companion for much of her life. That alone would be enough to drive any young girl to the brink of madness, but it's only part of Ember's problems. Plagued with the mysterious disappearance of her father, a substance abusing mother, a brother battling his own demons of death and depression and the erratic behavior of her life long best friend; Ember is about the loneliest person you could ever come across. Yet she never truly gives up and never looks to further the burden on others with her problems.Murders and disappearances are erupting around Ember and all with eerily similar details to her fathers crime scene. Several newcomers to town are showing their interest in Ember, the police see her as Undesirable Number One and someone seems determined to kill her.Ember and Asher both develop well as characters. Asher is intense but caring and protective. His relationship with Ember moves a bit quick but it's not an instant love situation just a mutual magnetic attraction. However, I found most of the other characters a bit lacking in substance. Raven is about the worst best friend you could ask for and through much of the book I just flat out didn't like her. Ian, Ember's brother, I think has real potential as a character. He's a broody artist and I would have liked to get more insight on his story.I do have to say that too often the dialogue felt off or immature. It is a young adult book and not being a young adult myself...perhaps that is just my personal hang up.I don't normally gravitate to stories with angels and reapers and though I can't say that there were many twists and turns, there were a few things I didn't expect and that was enough to keep me intrigued. It's not a very long book and I think maybe that was it's problem for me with character development. But overall this is a good base to what is sure to continue to be an a great story filled with a dark and romantically Gothic feel.

It's been a while since I've read a book in a day or less. This is one of those books. I couldn't force myself to put it down, and stayed up most of the night.

Ember can see a person's death when she touches them. She prefers to stay to herself and write poetry so that she doesn't get overwhelmed. That is until she meets the two new boys in town, Asher and Cameron. Both guys seem to be competing for her attention. When a string of murders take place, and Ember see things that aren't there, she begins to question everything.

The storyline was paced perfectly, and there was something happening at every turn. I never felt like the plot was choppy or anything like that, it just flowed. The characters were easy to relate to. Raven, Ember's BFF, got on my nerves, but her personality is pretty superficial. Garrick totally gave me the creeps. I knew he was bad news the minute he entered the story. There were times that I thought Raven and Ember were a little too comfy with the situations and topics thrown around. That was my only peeve. I loved the unique spin on death. I haven't ready anything similar. At the end fo the book I was left wanting more, and can't wait for the next installment.

Definitely pick this one up. You will not be disappointed!!!!

Ember is living a nightmare. Her home life is awful, but this isn’t all she has to deal with. Ember can sense when a person is going to die and how. She lives everyday not being able to touch anyone, for fear she sees them die. It has to be a lonely life for Ember. I always like when the main character is just a typical young girl who has no clue the beauty she holds and the affect she has on others, and the gift that believes is a curse is anything but. Ember is this girl. She is just an all around good girl and I adored her, and her best friend, who was a little on the wild side.

The two guys, Cameron and Asher, were both so mysterious. There were times when I was questioning which was the good one and which one was the evil one. I think the fact that it wasn’t revealed who was who until the near the end was great. Ember is somewhat torn between the two, and I wouldn’t call it a love triangle, but maybe a lust-triangle. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why, they are gorgeous and mysterious, what’s not to like, so it was easy to see why she is so confused. I think I was just as torn when it came to these two also.

The plot is moves a fairly fast pace, and it kept my interest from the beginning. The battle between the Angels, who weren’t just Angels, but Angels of Death and the Reapers. Ember seeing death omens opens her world to something she never dreamed of and puts her in danger, with those who want to stop her or claim her for their side, so there was really a dull moment. Yes, there some teenage drama that came along with the story, but it never really interfered with the main story. There is so much to the story, but it is hard to not give too much away. And all the events leading up the big battle at the end, it was intense and I was still not sure what I wanted Ember to do, but it was still fantastic. I was satisfied with the way it ended, but it had a cliffhanger feel to it. Questions still remain and what is in store for Ember is still a mystery.

All in all, this has some amazing characters, and interesting plot and I am always a sucker for Reapers, so I enjoyed this a lot. This to me was a strong start to the series, and I am looking forward to reading Cinder, the second book later this year.

awesome series. I am almost finished book 2 of the series. I am looking for book 3 on here and I'm having a hard time finding it! I am either hoping it's on here somewhere or hopefully will be in the near future!
