About this ebook

Sandra Moody has had it. The water keeps rising and there's nothing she can do about it. If the rain doesn't stop, her idyllic summer cabin will be swallowed up by a backlog of runoff and sludge. With a cause to champion, Sandra recruits her neighbors and town officials to find the source of flooding. Sandra's incessant digging ruffles feathers and answers seem to dry up faster than a desert oasis. If not for the mysterious disappearance of her favorite neighbor, she'd be one step away from locking the door and tossing the key.

Mrs. Walker’s cabin, like my own, was an exact duplicate of the twenty other cabins placed haphazardly around a small center green. A natural fence of Long Island pine trees ten to twenty deep formed a protective circle around our hidden enclave deep in the pine barrens of the East End.

Mrs. Walker, I shouted earnestly trying to convey a sense of urgency. The water is rising fast. I came to bring you over to Stanley’s place. I turned around and waved over to Stanley shifting his stocky frame restlessly on his covered front porch. He hated Mrs. Walker. Everyone did. He gave me the thumbs up but his jowly face told another story. Stanley’s cabin was comfortably balanced at the top of a burn maybe twenty feet higher than Mrs. Walker’s cabin. A safe haven. One of the few. A handful of the cabins had lost their battle about a year ago and the families headed to higher
